01:29<zzap>backport ?
01:29<zzap>UnZip 5.52 of 28 February 2005, by Debian. Original by Info-ZIP.
01:29<zzap>this is what i have
01:29<kop>zzap: jm_ says you need at least version 6.0, which is not in lenny but is in squeeze.
01:30<zzap>how do i get it ?
01:30<kop>!simple sid backport
01:30<dpkg>First: check for a backport on <>. If unavailable, 1) Add ONLY a "deb-src ..." line for sid to your sources.list. 2) enable (see <bpo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.

05:47<Ox90>alrite chaps, running debian with 2.6.32 backport kernel, SAS disks in RAID 5 hanging off a Perc4i controller. Using nfs with sync option i get ~500K/s write speed, with async it shoots up to ~20M/s write. This the the backend for a Xenserver pool. In your opinion is using the async option worth the risk for the massive increase in write speed? i wanted to use iSCSI put when using ietd the write throughput is even worse than NFS. Do you

10:35<dpkg>i guess pastebinit is a command-line tool to send data to a <pastebin>; convenient if you don't have a graphical interface. To paste eg. your sources.list do "aptitude install pastebinit; pastebinit /etc/apt/sources.list"; to paste the output of a program do eg. "dmesg | pastebinit". In lenny, use "pastebinit -b", because it's broken for most other sites (#572728).

15:01<craigevil>!why aptitude
15:01<dpkg>aptitude has more advanced conflict/dependency resolution and will often find a solution where apt-get gives up. It can be used from the command line like apt-get plus an interactive resolver makes it much easier to recover from broken dependencies. It has advanced search capabilities (see <aptitude search>).
15:02<Tiller>old: I still don't have the windows option in grub2 ^^

15:40<Hero_>!ask Just as I went and downloaded xchat client I needed to find out how to run the file. So i googled it and found the answer on a forum. It said to use 'dpkg -i name.deb' and so I did that for xChat. After it failed I read that it had two package dependencies i needed to obtain. So i did and used the same terminal command to install them. After that I went back and installed xChat the same way. Well then I read on the same forum that using 'dpkg'
15:40<Hero_> to install single files can really screw your system up. Well xchat is working fine as you can see, so I'm not sure if I screwed it up or not. This is my absolute first day on Linux and I just downloaded/installed debian.. so i'm not sure of the version. My question is how do I go about installing files and using them without screwing things up? Someone mentioned apt- but I read that command list and can't figure out if I need or not. Can someone

19:50<Lantizia>Lo... I am right in saying /etc/hostname should _NOT_ contain the FQDN... but in fact just the actual hostname
19:50<Lantizia>And that the full FQDN of ther server should be in /etc/hosts not /etc/hostname
19:50<Lantizia>Someone tell me I'm not crazy
19:50<kb9tui>abrotman:no. I'm still trying to digest all I am finding there!
19:50<jmad980>Lantizia: you're crazy
19:50<abrotman>Lantizia: there's also /etc/mailname
19:50<jmad980>not sure what your talking bout tho ;)
19:50<Lantizia>jmad980, thanks :)
19:50<abrotman>Lantizia: but yes, /etc/hostname has just the hostname, not the FQDN
19:51<Lantizia>abrotman, ok the Zimbra have got things really fucked up
19:51<abrotman>shocker ...
19:51<abrotman>did they decide to support Lenny yet?
19:51<Lantizia>they're installed program for lenny 5.0 (the open source one) claims that /etc/hosts should only have localhost and localhost.localdomain in it because mysql hates anything else on that line (wrong)... and thus the fqdn needs to be in /etc/hostname
19:51<Lantizia>abrotman, apparently
19:52<abrotman>Lantizia: what about /etc/mailname ?
19:52<Lantizia>no mention of it
19:53<Lantizia>I may just skip the installer script and head straight for the debian packages to install
