02:06<austinium>hi, is there any way to display a website on the desktop on GNOME(running on Lenny)?
02:06<austinium>like ActiveDesktop in Windoze
02:06<eightyeight>not familiar with Windoze
02:07<eightyeight>i know Windows, however
02:07<austinium>hehe..Windows it is
02:08<eightyeight>also, active desktop became the sidebar in windows vista. is this what you're referring to?
02:08<austinium>nope, this is more like WindowsXP where you can have a webpage displayed on your desktop
02:09<austinium>Display Properties> Customize Desktop (button)>Web(tab)
02:10<Danny>problem access diskonkey
02:10<eightyeight>austinium: i don't know of any utility that does that
02:10<eightyeight>Danny: what is diskonkey?
02:10<Danny>disk on key ?
02:10<eightyeight>yes. what is it?
02:11<Danny>little usb portable storage
02:11<jm_>it's a USB drive AFAIK
02:11<eightyeight>k. what problems are you having?
02:11<Danny>can't access the disk
02:11<eightyeight>you mean it's not mounting? are you running gnome or kde?
02:12<Danny>it shows in list
02:12<Danny>not in "df"
02:12<eightyeight>what list?
02:12<Danny>and when I try to view I get org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied
02:13<Danny>like "my computer"
02:13<eightyeight>are you running gnome or kde?
02:13<eightyeight>and when you pull it out and plug it back in, it's not showing a new icon on the desktop?
02:14<Danny>no icon desktop
02:14<eightyeight>what filesystem is on the usb thumb drive?
02:14<Danny>only in window list
02:14<eightyeight>what window list?
02:15<Danny>like in xp mycomputer
02:15<Danny>not appearing in shell
02:15<Danny>not showing in df
02:15<eightyeight>df only shows mounted disks. also, you still haven't answered my question: what filesystem is no the drive?
02:16<Danny>is that what you mean ?
02:16<eightyeight>as root, what does 'fdisk -l' show? does it show your drive?
02:17<eightyeight>you might have to mount it manually
02:17<Danny>but I don't know what the device is
02:17<jm_>just run fdisk -l without specifying a device
02:17<eightyeight>check the end of /var/log/messages, and see if the kernel saw it
02:17<Danny>and I know from other OS it sepose to automount the disk when connected
02:18<jm_>also cat /proc/partitions
02:18<eightyeight>Danny: gnome should be automounting it. because it isn't, tells me you either have a problem with the disk/filesystem, or somethelse is wrong
02:19<Danny>what ? give me a hint please

02:22<eightyeight>that's the point of looking in fdisk -l, /var/log/messages, and dmesg
02:23<Danny>/dev/sdb1 * 1 246 125936 6 FAT16
02:23<Danny>Partition 1 has different physical/logical endings:

06:21<htk>hi guys
06:22-!-ichat_system [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
06:22<Sypher>jm_, another strange thing is that you first have to define an inet6
06:22<Sypher>else the ifup trick won'twork
06:24<jm_>Sypher: define how?
06:24<Sypher>inet, inet6 = ifup has no effect, ifup -v eth0 complains about a file...
06:24<Sypher>inet6, inet = ifup trick works and adds ipv6 to eth0
06:25<Sypher>until now
06:25<Sypher>weird stuff :-)
06:27<jm_>ahh right, that's the duplicate detection stuff I guess - but I would expect that it would configure ipv6 at boot then
06:27<Sypher>it does work on some of my machines
06:28<Sypher>i can try a virtual eth
06:28<Sypher>even though it still adds it to eth0

10:03<xsdg>Zathraz: why the heck are you using FireBird?
10:04<Zathraz>good question: legacy app is using it. We need the app
10:04<Zathraz>would not have been my choice....
10:05<Zathraz>I think I have found the issue. Kind of very sad....
10:05<xsdg>ouch. My guess is that FireBird doesn't support IPv6 and makes assumptions about the kinds of addresses it gets. Resolver returns IPv6 addresses by default, if available. *boom*

18:57<mom>witte, thanks some guy was trying to tell me that it was the wrong way to do it that it dist-upgrade is only supposed to be for upgrading the distro entirely
18:58<witte>from man apt-get: dist-upgrade in addition to performing the function of upgrade, also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions of packages
18:58<jhutchins_lt>mom: It's a good idea to make sure your source list has the release name (lenny) in it, rather than "stable".
18:59<dpkg>dist-upgrade tells apt to also install/remove packages when handling dependencies; security updates may require a dist-upgrade to install (they introduce new packages). Dist-upgrade does not mean changing from stable to testing; in lenny, aptitude calls dist-upgrade "full-upgrade" to remove this confusion. Read man apt-get carefully. Also see <why not dist-upgrade> <sarge->etch> <etch->lenny> <lenny->squeeze> <full-upgrade>
18:59<mom>witte, yeah he kept saying the proper way was aptitude update && apt-get install

19:02<jhutchins_lt>mom: There are several cron packages available that do that.
19:03<mom>jhutchins, ah ok . . . well i wanted to do something for lpic i studying that involved cron :)
19:04<witte>!why not dist upgrade
19:04<dpkg>If you're going to use apt-get dist-upgrade (or aptitude full-upgrade), when you run the command, you need to make absolutely sure that it isn't going to remove anything you actually want to have installed. If it does, use apt-get install to install specific packages that have been held back on apt-get upgrade, and only allow upgrades that don't remove things that you want. Ask me about <pinning> <hold> <unmarkauto>.
