00:00-!-S_WO [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
00:00<moldovean>well try to choose NO , and see
00:01<buckh>how about
00:01<buckh>apt-get -t squeeze install gcc-4.4-base=4.4.4-6
00:01-!-S_WO [] has joined #debian
00:02<moldovean>buckh, it will do the same (and same question)
00:02<rld>I'm getting the feeling both command will break everything, hang on a sec
00:04-!-f0g [~f0g@] has joined #debian
00:04-!-f0g [~f0g@] has quit []
00:06-!-MeCooL [mecool@] has joined #debian
00:06<moldovean>rld, so go for sid , or revert it (use buckh command) , and prey ..
00:07<moldovean>as new install , hope not important data on system
00:07-!-|gamambel| [] has quit []
00:07<rld>aw, crap
00:07-!-edbian [] has quit [Quit: Bye]
00:07<rld>luckily, no, there's nothing important here
00:07<buckh>i'm out of my depth, but when i get into that situation myself, i apt-get update
00:08<rld>i'm dual booting with windows and have everything on a separate ntfs partition
00:08-!-S-Wo [] has joined #debian
00:08<buckh>no, don't use my command. that'd leave the system completely broken
00:09<rld>i know, pretty much everything is asking me to remove practically all packages
00:09<buckh>try to update, and if you don't get a more coherent Packages database, then try changing your mirrors to something more ``upstream'' so maybe any old cruft gets updated
00:10<dondelelcaro>rld: what are you actually trying to do?
00:10-!-S_WO [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:10<rld>dondelelcaro, i'm trying to install gimp
00:10<buckh>otherwise, wait til some further updates to sid bring it into a coherent state
00:11<dondelelcaro>rld: so why are you installing things from squeeze?
00:11<rld>dondelelcaro, i'm not sure, i followed a howto a few days back that required me to do that...for some reason everything is breaking now
00:11<rld>i could install things just fine a few hours ago
00:11<dondelelcaro>ugh; stupid howtos
00:12<dondelelcaro>rld: anyway, are you trying to run stable? or what?
00:12<rld>i have testing now
00:12<moldovean>rld, you mixed squeeze and sid
00:12<dondelelcaro>rld: ok. what is the output of apt-cache policy; and apt-cache policy gcc-4.4-base;
00:12-!-Lenhix [lenhix@] has joined #debian
00:13<dondelelcaro>rld: and why are you using the -t option to select squeeze if you're actually running testing?
00:13<rld>apt-cache policy:
00:14<rld>apt-cache policy gcc-4.4-base:
00:14<Lenhix>Hey guys, I just noticed a possibly mispelled package: libmysql5.0-cil - MySQL database connector for CLI
00:14<Lenhix>Where can i find if that's mispelled and/or already reported?
00:17<dondelelcaro>Lenhix: it's not mispelled
00:17<Lenhix>uhm...ok. Just weird
00:18<rld>so, should I just reinstall everything and be careful when messing with sources then?
00:18-!-S-Wo [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
00:19<buckh>rld: it looks like you've got sid packages installed even though all your sources are squeeze
00:19<dondelelcaro>Lenhix: CIL stands for common interface language; the CLI is probably a typo, but I'm not sure
00:19<dondelelcaro>actually, CLI isn't a typo either
00:19<buckh>you can try upgrading everything to sid by changing everything in /etc/apt/sources.list* to say sid or unstable in lieu of squeeze or testing
00:20<buckh>but that's going to wed your machine to unstable from then on
00:20<dondelelcaro>rld: ok, you've installed stuff from unstable on a testing box. This is a *bad* ideal
00:20<rld>i see
00:20<dondelelcaro>rld: what you need to do is downgrade what you've installed to squeeze, and then continue on, and castigate whoever wrote that howto
00:21-!-KukuNut [] has joined #debian
00:21<rld>dondelelcaro, how should I downgrade the packages? I've learned Linux basics at some recent university classes but nothing about installing or fixing installations...
00:22<dondelelcaro>you can do this using pinning, or you can wait for things to migrate
00:22-!-prem [~prem@] has joined #debian
00:23<Lenhix>ok dondelelcaro. Thx for the clarification
00:23<dondelelcaro>(to do pinning, you need to temporarily pin testing to priority 1001 or so, then do an upgrade, then undo the pin, and clean up any mess.)
00:24<rld>dondelelcaro, I'm not sure I know how to do all that, hehe
00:24<dondelelcaro>!tell rld -about pinning
00:24-!-Lenhix [lenhix@] has quit [Quit: Mindwall!!]
00:24<rld>I guess it's best if I just reinstall then
00:24-!-KukuNut [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:25<dondelelcaro>do whatever works for you; the documentation of pinning is in man apt_preferences;
00:25<dondelelcaro>(and in the wiki link that I sent you)
00:25-!-titacgs [~titacgs@] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:25<rld>I'm concerned mainly about keeping my preferences for everything so I don't have to waste more time configuring backing up my entire home folder enough for that?
00:26<dondelelcaro>depends what you've configured
00:26<dondelelcaro>that'll save all user configurations, but not any system-wide configurations
00:26-!-whirl [~whirl@] has joined #debian
00:27<rld>I don't think I made any changes to system configurations except setting up a static IP for hosting an ssh server
00:27<dondelelcaro>then you can backup /home, and you should be fine
00:28<rld>well then, I'm off to reinstall...I learned my lesson (the hard way)
00:28<rld>thanks a lot everyone!

05:43<mcayland>hey folks. i'm getting the "grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)" error after my last aptitude update on squeeze
05:44<mcayland>have found a couple of debian bugs, one of which mentions adding UUIDs to /etc/fstab by hand
05:44<mcayland>i've done this but it still doesn't work :( any ideas?

13:31<peterS>wulph: xrandr replaces xinerama if all your apps fully support xrandr. in particular, your window manager. but also things like screen savers and other things that want to know about 'full screen' things. not all apps necessarily fully support xrandr.
13:31<peterS>no reason you can't use both xrandr and xinerama, though. if it causes gnome-screensaver to crash, well, that's a bug in gnome-screensaver.
