05:52<matth>hi guys, I'm running debian lenny on a little ARM box (DNS-323)
05:52<matth>and am seeing problems with the filesystem when backuping files on a second hdd
05:53<matth>src dir is sane, and dst dir on the backup disk appear like this :
05:53-!-fabrianchi [~hachepe@] has joined #debian
05:53<matth>the disk is new, formatted into ext4 and fsck is saying everything's fine.
05:54<matth>does anyone have already seen this problem ?
05:55<xjjk>are you sure the hw is OK?
05:56<matth>I don't know, the box is running ok i.e (I'm talking from it with irssi)
05:56<matth>and nfs sharing is fine but...
05:56<xjjk>try recreating the FS with -c? checks for bad blocks
05:56<matth>it's not automatically done ?
05:56<xjjk>I don't think
05:58<matth>okay I'll test that
05:59<matth>but I would like to understand what can really cause this behavior
05:59<xjjk>the only thing I know of would be bad hardware
05:59<matth>I mean creating a file that will appear with ls but has no data linked to it
05:59<xjjk>if you're able to irc that's implying your cpu/memory are good enough
05:59<xjjk>so time to blame the disks
05:59<matth>or maybe the controller ?
06:00<xjjk>is it different than the first disk?
06:00<matth>the hw is quite cheap, orion5x SoC
06:00<xjjk>if we're on that train of thought, could be cable, etc too
06:00<matth>and actually I already had that on the first disk
06:01-!-dbvolio0 [~gffd@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
06:01<matth>in the past, on important file actually like libc6 during an upgrade
06:01<matth>so I fixed it all manually by mounting the disk on another pc
06:01<xjjk>yeh controller looks also likely with that info
06:01-!-Alexey [~Neo@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
06:02<matth>I would like to be able to re-create that problem with a poc
06:02<matth>but need to understand what's going on under the hood that could trigger such behavior
06:02<matth>proof of concept.
06:03<xjjk>well, if the issue is hardware... it's a bit difficult to reproduce
06:03<xjjk>software assumes hardware works in a deterministic manor

07:06<gsimmons>robin: You won't have any device support within the Lenny installer, as the b43 driver isn't part of nic-wireless-modules (Debian bug #547731). You would want to establish a base system first, then supply the required firmware post-installation.
07:07<robin>Ok, and as I dont have an Wired connection here. Ill be forced to abandon Debian?

22:17<sasha>Hello, I have a doubt, my Intel wireless card needs non-free firmware, on the other hand the intel hda sound card works out of the box, does that mean that the sound card is "free as in freedom" and the wireless isnt? 23:03<abrotman>!set the time
23:03<dpkg>To set the time in debian, use date --set. The truly enlightened user, however, will install <ntp> or <openntpd> to have their clock set automatically on reboot and slewed to match time servers. You may also need to run dpkg-reconfigure tzdata (lenny and later) or tzconfig (etch and earlier) to set the time zone, and verify the UTC setting in /etc/default/rcS prior.
