02:02<jm_>Phat: some applications can define their own cursors, is it the same with all?
02:02<Phat>for example, when I move the mouse into a text box, it changes to an icon of the letter 'I'. when I move it to the menu bar, it changes to the black "X"
02:02<Phat>yeah, it's the same with all
02:02<Phat>chrome, pidgin
02:03<Phat>even right after I startx
02:03<jm_>yeah it's the same here, if I move it to a window titlebar it becomes regular black arrow, as if theme didn't define one shape
02:04<jm_>or maybe it can't change that one, not sure - it never bothered me enough to investigate
02:04<jm_>but menu bars have the new shape, at least for gtk apps
02:04<nobarking>hello all
02:04<Phat>but the annoying thing is it's not a black arrow as regular
02:05<nobarking>does anyone know if iceweasel is compiled with cairo enabled?

02:13<nobarking>kenyon: it's pretty horrible on most sites
02:14<nobarking>i don't mean to compare it to ubuntu, but how is it that ubuntu gets smooth fonts out of the box?
02:14<PhatDoan>a thing I know is that xmonad doc. says that xmonad leave the mouse cursor stuff to X11 to deal with
02:14<nobarking>can't we achieve something similar in debian out of the box?

02:31<PhatDoan>oh man I figured it out
02:31<PhatDoan>xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr did the tricks
02:31<twb>PhatDoan: I do that in my .xinitrc as a matter of course
02:32<PhatDoan>yeah, now I know that. It's because xmonad inherits the default cursor from X11
02:32-!-thkoch [] has joined #debian
02:32<twb>On a recent X, i.e. one with the -retro option, left_ptr should be the default behaviour.
02:34<twb>nobarking: those screenshots don't look jagged to me.
02:34-!-chk [~hellkitte@] has joined #debian
02:35<nobarking>twb: that might add to the issue, what is good font rendering?
02:35<nobarking>i think it cloaks the whole dilemma or why we don't see something in debian
02:35<jm_>interesting that you need to run xsetroot -cursor_name by hand
02:35<twb>Good fonts are either well-drawn bitmap fonts rendered at the correct size, or properly hinted and antialiased outline fonts.
02:36<nobarking>it seems like ubuntu does patch certain libraries to get better rendering
02:36<twb>nobarking: I'm guessing you're running into the well-known problem of getting ghostscript fonts when the website asks for Microsoft fonts.
02:36<twb>nobarking: ghostscript (type1) fonts don't have hinting.
02:37-!-cahoot [~radix@] has joined #debian
02:37<twb>More likely is that on Ubuntu you've managed to install ubuntu-restricted-extras, which installs Microsoft's outline fonts.

06:35<bosam>okay, to be simple: one debian server accessible from outside bridge a vpn (ppp) with my computer, when iptables is off, i can RDP a computer on my local network, when it's on, i cannot

06:39<s_i_m>zeroXten, hm, actually i do not see why free reports so much used memory in your case. but Inactive should really mean reclaimable memory. I would trust /proc/info

15:29<cockroach>User_007: what exactly are you trying to control?
15:30<User_007>cockroach, it must be a led for example.
15:30<User_007>I want to run commands, like apt-get, or whatever via WEB.
15:31<cockroach>User_007: uuh. you'll probably have to write some cgi scripts for that. or use something like webmin that gives you (among other things) a command line in the browser
15:31<User_007>in order to turn-off the computer, restart it, install new things, but i want to do it using a browser, not SSH (what i am using now)
15:31<cockroach>User_007: i'd highly recommend keeping ssh, though
15:31<dpkg>Webmin is a lame web-based interface for unsafe system administration for Unix. Check it out at Remember, dondelelcaro *hates* webmin. "i'd rather sit on the floor shoving table knives into live electrical outlets than run webmin on an exposed server." See about the removal from Debian. Don't use their .debs, they are of extremely poor quality.

15:35<cockroach>User_007: well, that one's rather simple. create a small cgi script with such a button that runs "sudo reboot" when clicked
15:36<User_007>i was thinking to make an script to make some file in a folder, and the computer runs it by time in time...
15:36<cockroach>User_007: you'll have to give the required sudo permissions to the user apache in running as (www-data afaik)
15:36<cockroach>User_007: that's a possibility too, yes
15:36<PovAddict>User_007: if the guy doesn't "know about Linux and everything", I wouldn't give him that kind of web-based access either
15:36<User_007>can i make cgi do that? really?
15:36<cockroach>User_007: sure
15:37<cockroach>User_007: if you write your cgi script in bash, it's as simple as a touch /some/file

18:31<interbird>I'm looking to get debian installed om some old hardware; this hardware is very shitty (cdrom/speed). I could install U or Mint, but with Debian something strange happens; it somehow stalls. I've tried sarge, etch, lenny, squeeze, but all of them 'hang' at some point. And I would *very much* like one of those. I've tried a lot of options but i'm out-of-cards... Anyone as had this issue an can help me ?

21:39<interbird>devil: a fork is only useful if it realy is a fork; for instance like with samba and sambaNG, but to fork just for your own "vain" is not good. 21:41<devil>interbird: a foundation meeting will decide on that tonite, and unfortunately i am on the projects dev team and on the board of the foundation
21:41<interbird>why is that "unfortunately"?
21:41<sney>a lot of people want to fork debian because they think, "oh, debian would be so much better if all that contrib and nonfree stuff were easier for noobs to get at" but then the reality of supporting Adobe and nVidia's buggy-ass software comes crashing down

23:13<Vivek>I would like to reply to using my account
23:14<Vivek>What Subject line shoud I use, what is the format of using an external mail client to submit bugs or reply to a bug report.

23:19<interbird>Why don't you use the usual bug-report ways?
23:20<interbird>What is so difficult about posting bugs like anyone else does ?
23:20<Vivek>interbird: It is an already reported bug, just wanted to provide my feedbacks.
23:20<Vivek>interbird: Do you meant reportbug ?
23:22<interbird>Vivek: I don't understand you asking here about how to file a bug that you apparantly already did.
23:26<interbird>Feedbacks are appreciated but you understand that you are not alone in this universe; many have encountered this same "bug". To be a truly awsome dude would be if you helped fixing it; Complain is what the ignorant do; fixing is what the involved ones do. go figure.

23:33<Vivek>interbird: I have not filed
23:33<Vivek>interbird: I would like to provide my feedbacks to it.
23:34<Vivek>Using the reply option...
23:35<Vivek>So what I done is I have selected the ID and now would like to know what I should include in the subject
23:35<Vivek>I guess, the content can be my feedback, but what I would like to know is what to put in the subject.
23:36<Vivek>What I have done is used by gmail id and selected the compose option and entered in the To: Field.

23:39<interbird>Well, to be honest, if you cannot figure that out; why post a bug in the first place? Seems kind-a-silly you say you discouvered a "bug" but don't know how to act onwards.
23:42<interbird>This is not the place, for sure.
