00:13<zendeavor>hey guys, what would you suggest as the method to clone my entire internal HDD onto an external terabyte, then back onto a clean HDD I have?
00:13<zendeavor>The original HDD is in poor shape, and I have an exact model replacement that I'd prefer to swap over to

00:22<zendeavor>that doesn't appear to clone partitions
00:25<zendeavor>seems to be useful for cloning individual files, or cd/dvd
00:25<zendeavor>but internal partitions, not so much
00:25<jpinx-eeepc>zendeavor: it clones whole devices
00:26<franki^>It can clone partitions; I'm not saying it's the best tool for this job, but it's definitely possible
00:26<zendeavor>i tried with clonezilla already, but for some reason it wrote all the clone partitions as raw data, which grub can't boot
00:26<zendeavor>this is a sensitive job, i want the best tool available
00:26<zendeavor>i *thought* that was clonezilla, but it just gipped me

03:42<smv>flaccid, there are some tasks that might install what you need. read man tasksel again. see that there is ' /usr/share/tasksel/*.desc and /usr/local/share/tasksel/*.desc' that are used to define tasks. look there, choose the tasks that you want and install them via tasksel itself or via aptitude. bear in mind that would be beter to chose and install them at once, as aptitude might chose different applications for a given task, depending on the dependencies, if that
03:42<smv>makes sense. if you end with an app that you don't want just use aptitude to remove it.

04:50<Michalxo>yesterday I built one via "instructions in /usr/share/doc/kernel-package/README.gz." using make-kpkg but got kernel panic :-(
04:51<jpinx-eeepc>Michalxo: no - that's why I'm not advising him on that topic

04:52<locklace>Michalxo: get the source from, unpack it, cd into the unpacked source directory, copy your existing 2.6.35 config (usually available in /boot/config-*) to .config, run make all (or make -j 2 all if you have > 1 cpu core)
04:52<Michalxo>guys come on, this laptop is almost unusable w/o ability to wake up from suspend/hibernation
04:52<cahoot>if the compile crashes I'd suspect hw error

06:02<Myon>in theory, amd64 is better at managing 4GB RAM, but in practice, you asked for flash

06:05<witte>Myon: and are there any changes expected in the near future regarding amd64? or is that unrealistic?
06:06<locklace>if you're talking about skype and flash, you'll have to ask skype and adobe
06:06<Myon>witte: ask adobe
06:06<locklace>everything else in amd64 works fine
06:06<Myon>but honestly, if you don't know what to choose, you don't "need" amd64, so take i386
06:06<Myon>amd64 is just cooler
06:07<locklace>i don't agree with that argument. i say use the arch that best matches the capabilities of your hardware
06:07<locklace>unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise, like "omg flash"
06:08<witte>i think i will go for 32 bit. My girlfriends problem solving capabilities are limited and she will most likely not notice the difference. It just needs to work...

15:02<eightyeight>mjt: a hardware raid solution provided by intel?
15:02<mjt>older intel server were using scsi raid controllers that are managed by ips module. Nowaday it's mostly lsi logic (mini-pcix) cards. Both are supported.
15:02<mjt>but i guess you mean something else..

15:03<mjt>if you mean on-board sata raid, that's not hardware raid

15:05<eightyeight>if it's true hardware raid, not fake hardware raid, then i would go with that. and if it's an intel board, then it's likely supported
15:05<imperia>actually i haven't checked yet what the mainboard is.. but i think its intel(raid is ICH9R i think). currectly it have opensuse installed with software raid but i am planning to go debian. and i wonder if i should continue using software raid or hardware raid
15:05<mjt>intel calls it 'matrix raid' or something like that
15:06<imperia>i guess i will stay with software then!
15:06<mjt>and yes it's not hardware raid
15:06<mjt>and yes, just use md
15:06<eightyeight>imperia: consider this: most hardware raid vendors are using the linux software raid firmware to power their boards
15:06<eightyeight>imperia: it's quite reliable and very robust
15:07<mjt>um, that's too strong statement that should be backed up by facts.
15:07<mjt>if by "using" you don't mean, like, some employee is using it on his linux box @home :)

16:38<smv>Dym, also I'd stay away from Solaris for a wile, but that is just me, unless you already have it installed and functional. On the other hand, any other unix like OS is quite simple to change, especially if you can get the sources, gnu/linux and freebsd having the most complete documentation in this area but also quite helpful communities, and this will allow you to manage better the system to reduce power in some situations.

21:43<AlexMax>Quick question. I've just installed lenny and I want to update to squeeze. I replaced all instances of lenny with squeeze, and apparently there's a conflict. It wants to remove libept0 and add libsasl2-modules. Is this correct?
21:43<AlexMax>aptitude update

21:49<moldovean>dpkg, lenny->squeeze
21:49<dpkg>Ask me about <squeeze udev>, as you will need to upgrade to the squeeze kernel and reboot first. Remove any APT source specific to stable (such as volatile) or bpo, then s/lenny/squeeze/ on your sources.list and then aptitude update && aptitude install aptitude linux-image-`uname -r | sed 's,.*-,,'` ; reboot; aptitude safe-upgrade && aptitude full-upgrade. Also ask me about <d-d-a>, <apt-listchanges>, <testing>, <squeeze release notes>.
