00:00-!-vdef [] has joined #debian
00:02<vdef>hi, I'm running Debian 2.6.26-21lenny4 and it seems like the system doesn't enforce the non-executable stack option as marked in elf executables -- does anyone know why or how to fix this?
00:04-!-medium_ [~medium@] has joined #debian

00:14<edbian>What options do I have for an open source flash player?
00:14<franki^>vdef: No idea sorry. If you don't get an answer here you could try the mailing list
00:14<franki^>edbian: I use Gnash
00:14<edbian>franki^, What sites have you found that it doesn't work for?
00:14<vdef>franki^: ok, thanks. I'll try that.
00:15-!-vdef [] has quit [Quit: bed time]
00:15<tash>edbian: youtube works fine with gnash
00:15<tash>with a little tweak
00:16<franki^>edbian: I can't think of any right now, Gnash has improved _a_lot_ since Adobe withdraw support for 64bit Linux
00:16<edbian>franki^, awesome. I'll take a look into it. Does it run faster than adobe's flashplayer?
00:16<franki^>edbian: Now everything seems to (mostly) work for me (on Squeeze)
00:16-!-ItalianPlumber [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:16<franki^>edbian: No :P
00:17<franki^>And you do get some weirdness sometimes
00:17<edbian>How is VLC so good at playing flash and everything else so bad?
00:17<tash>edbian; but gnash is free as in freedom :)
00:17<edbian>yeah, I'm switching now for that very reason
00:17<tash>edbian :) rms would be proud
00:18<edbian>Is gnash not a browser plugin? swiftfox can't find it.
00:19<edbian>nor chrome
00:20<tash>did you installed browser-plugin-gnash package?
00:21<edbian>it's on the way
00:22<tash>edbian: IDK how is swiftfox use it, since swiftfox isn't part of debian
00:23<edbian>tash, Yeah, every video on youtube says "an error has occured"
00:23<tash>maybe it will search in the same paths of iceweasel
00:24<tash>edbian: install cslite free(as in freeedom) plugin and block cookies from youtube
00:24<franki^>You may need to delete your cookies to get Gnash to work
00:24<franki^>But you don;t need to block cookies from Youtube (any more)
00:24<edbian>franki^, Do I need to block cookies or not?
00:24<tash>1 hour ago I need it
00:25<edbian>Also, why is vlc so good at playing flash and every other app is so bad?
00:25<franki^>I don't block cookies *shrug*
00:25<edbian>tash, What does cslite do?
00:25<tash>block cookies, but franki^says it is not need anymore
00:26<tash>am trying
00:26<edbian>I have no cookies from youtube
00:26<franki^>I'm using Gnash 0.8.8-5 if that makes any difference
00:26<edbian>It works in chromium but not well
00:26<edbian>was than flash
00:27<edbian>same version
00:27<tash>it seems to work just by deleting the cookies, edbian you could install the cslite to easy delete cookies and block it, but it seems like is not needed at all
00:27<tash>thanks franki^

00:49<franki^>umarzuki: SkoleLinux isn't really supported here, but I guess if you ask your real question someone might be able to help.
00:49<dpkg>Skolelinux is the name of a Debian Pure Blend produced by the <Debian Edu> project. See for more details. Not supported in #debian, join #skolelinux @ for user/admin support.
00:49<dpkg>Please do not ask if anyone can help you, knows 'something' or uses 'some_program'. Instead, ask your real question. (If the real question _was_ "does anyone use 'some_program'?" ask me about <popcon> instead.) See <ask> <ask to ask> <polls> <search> <sicco> <smart questions>.
00:50<umarzuki>i setup its main server (on vmware player), created an ldap user, added a workstation (another vmware player guest)
00:51<umarzuki>how do i get to log in with the ldap user from workstation
00:51<tash>vmplayer is part of vmware?
00:51<umarzuki>definitely i need to do something so the workstation is to authenticate to the main server's ldap

02:27<pallgone>ottoshmidt: some people fix bugs in both ubuntu and debian, but as I heard bugs/fixes that apply to Ubuntu often do not apply do Debian, probably because:
02:27<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian, and it is unlikely to live up to Debian's standards (see <Debian policy>). Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu ( instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian>.

07:18<EmleyMoor>Not that I believe I've got the space (at least yet) but are video DVDs "rippable" to hard disk in such a way they will play?
07:18<bremner>yes, with some caveats
07:19<EmleyMoor>bremner: What are the caveats?
07:20<bremner>well, most dvd's use a copy protection mechanism called css, which is trivial to break, but the library is not in debian main
07:20<EmleyMoor>bremner: Know about css - that's no great problew
07:20<bremner>afaik, you need libdvdcss2 from debian-multimedia
07:21<petemc>handbrake is a good tool for ripping dvds
07:21<bremner>Other than that, encoding video is fairly cpu intensive, but most modern machines should be able to do it no problem.
07:21<bremner>handbrake is also not in Debian, right?
07:22<EmleyMoor>I'm mainly after a way to help preserve my library - already had to shell out for one replacement DVD so far
07:22<EmleyMoor>Possibly in dmm
07:22<EmleyMoor>I have it installed
07:22<bremner>yeah, it is in dmm
07:23<EmleyMoor>Unfortunately I can't really understand what to do with it and what the results will be

07:27<ottoshmidt>!Debian Policy
07:27<EmleyMoor>I dan't think this is going to achieve quite what I intended
07:27<dpkg>well, policy is the document that defines how Debian packages should (and must!) interact with each other and with the user to make sure we have a high-quality, stable distribution. You can find it at or in the debian-policy package. Those who fail to understand Debian Policy are doomed to reimplement it, poorly. See also <best practices> <nmg> <mentors>.

07:34<petemc>dvdshrink lets you 'backup' your disks, though last time i checked it was a windows app, could be made to work with wine

07:36<gsimmons>EmleyMoor: You might be interested in dvdbackup (/msg dpkg dvdbackup) or mplayer's -dumpstream option.

13:35<dpkg>UTF-8 is way of encoding multibyte characters from the Universal Character Set (Unicode/ISO10646). UTF-8 is a superset of US-ASCII but can represent all of unicode. By default, Debian will use a UTF-8 locale for you, but ask me about <locales><localised errors>. Typically, you use something like "LANG=<lang>_<CC>.utf8" e.g. export LANG=en_US.utf8 (for US-English). To fix garbled man pages, see /usr/share/doc/groff/README.Debian.

If it's not 'actual' ram then where are these memory addresses that are causing itself to notice that the whole system's ram went

23:31<zendeavor>cuz with every new package update, preferably a backport of it would be compiled for multiple legacy versions of the distro

23:31<zendeavor>I didn't say it was a problem

23:32<kmap>I don't quite think so. I find it quite useful to have it; a best of both worlds kind of thing.

23:33<zendeavor>it can be useful
23:33<zendeavor>if you hate being current?
23:33<kmap>Well, for an application like apache2, I might not want the backport. But for something like, say mutt, I might want one

23:35<zendeavor>there is merit in it
