01:59<Silicium01>Guys, I installed debian on a Intel i5 machine and grub shows me amd64
01:59<Silicium01>Does this mean something didn't go right?
02:00<rigved>Silicium01: there are two architectures, AMD64 and i386
02:00<Silicium01>rigved, right, and if my i5 laptop shows amd64 at the grub level, it means not the right versin is installed right?
02:01<nevyn>Silicium01: amd were first to release cpu's with a 64bit extension for ia32 debian respects this.
02:01<nevyn>Silicium01: it's the correct version
02:01<rigved>Silicium01: you have a 64-bit OS and a processor that supports 64-bit operations, so you have an AMD64 architecture as detected by the OS
02:01-!-lenios [~lenios@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]

02:04<nevyn>run xrandr
02:04<Silicium01>then I connect via VGA and it's detected but after a few minutes it goes black
02:04<Silicium01>nevyn, is xrandr what gnome comes with and calles "monitors" under preferences in squeeze?
02:05<nevyn>monitors is a funky client for xrandr.
02:05<nevyn>xrandr is a commandline client that prints on the console a list of connected screens
02:05<Silicium01>nevyn, right, so I'm using the right thing then
02:05<Silicium01>somehow monitor is not detected through hdmi
02:06<nevyn>Silicium01: but I don't know if monitor's in gnome will print the state of all outputs.

02:13<Talon_>I've got ubuntu and debian, trying to transition from ubuntu to debian, and one of the annoyances I have thus far (debian squeeze) when I bring up a terminal and su (sometimes i need to do more than 1 cmd so su is more handy than sudo) I lose all colors so its hard to distinguish a directory from a file, executables from non-executables, etc.. i haveto ls -l and read permissions
02:13<Talon_>is there a way to fix this?
02:14<nevyn>Talon_: alias ls = 'ls --colour=auto'

02:15<dpkg>~/.bashrc is where you put all your aliases and functions. It's read at start-up time by all interactive non-login shells. To make sure it's read by a login shell, put "source ~/.bashrc" at the end of ~/.bash_profile, or just remove the comment that is placed before the already typed include line that Debian's ~/.bash_profile has by default. Ask me about <bash eternal history>.
02:15<jm_>Talon_ ^^^^

17:57<Elessar>Are there some X.Org gurus here? I am getting a problem that looks like bug #600280: my XKBOPTIONS setting is not taken into account by X.Org.
17:58<Elessar>No /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Only /etc/default/keyboard.
17:59<Elessar>XKBOPTIONS is corretly taken into account by udev (grep XKBOPTIONS /dev/.udev/db/input:event* → /dev/.udev/db/input:event0:E:XKBOPTIONS=compose:menu,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp).
18:01<Elessar>But X.Org seems to ignore it (no compose(menu) in setxkbmap -print's output).

18:22<Elessar>Okay, for the problem I have exposed, I have just discovered that my XKBOPTIONS are taken into account correctly when I do not use gdm3 but directly startx from the console. So I guess gdm3 itself is messing with xkb settings.

22:44<amakusa>hello, I'm trying to use recordmydesktop, it records video properly but the sound captured by the microphone breaks frequently, anyone knows what might be going on? Debian Sid Amd64
22:45<dpkg>sid is the <unstable> version of Debian. Sid is the destructive kid in Toy Story. It is NOT an acronym, but is sometimes backronymed Still In Development anyway. Do not use sid unless you have the skill to find your way out of the mess that broken packages may put you in; sid is not supported in #debian because sid users should be able to solve their own problems. Sid will never be released. See also <sid faq> <unstable>.

22:48<amakusa>alvarezp, kop, yeah I've tried, and actually everything works, even sound quality, but it still breaks up frequently, and it was doing the same thing before I upgraded to sid
