06:01<sugarmice>No, I'm not. PowerShell is a completely new shell for Windows. It's available for XP and Server 2003 as an additional download, but it's a standard part of Server 2008. It's sort of based on POSIX, so UNIX heads find it fairly comfortable, but it has significant differences
06:02<jm_>vice is also available in debian :)
06:02<dannyanny>But MS Windows command line is not great
06:03<dannyanny>jm thats great, but after working with c64 I moved on to Apple2e
06:03<sugarmice>For example, PowerShell pipelines do not work on text streams, like UNIX shells do. They work with .NET objects instead, which takes some getting used to, but also makes them much more powerful.

09:10<dennis-p>so I guess you can't actually reuse the hours of downloaded packages if the computer freezes during config and install, although in theory it should just use them.

09:50<cthuluh>though there are more elegant solutions such as installing a minimal system and then use apt-zip or apt-offline
09:50<abrotman>but really, the netinst is recommended if you have broadband at the installation locatoin
09:50<abrotman>the netinst is a smaller download, and will get everything else from the internet as you need it, instead of wasting your time downloading ISOs you'll never use

12:54<blockowitsch>hello. i noticed that when using tools like unrar with huge input files, the system gets extremely slow. it looks like the reason is that the linux buffer/file cache gets filled up with the input files of unrar (or any other used tool) and drops all other (much more important) data from the buffer. is there any solution that allows me to set buffer handling per application, executable or process?
