01:59<balthasar>or, better, Linux...
01:59<dpkg>The Debian Reference will answer most of your questions about Debian. The latest version (v2) is at . Read it after installing Debian and before asking for support, as it is the closest thing Debian has to a manual. You can install this too, the package name is debian-reference: 'aptitude install debian-reference'
01:59<balthasar>is Debian complicated in a special way?

02:02<cahoot>I wouldn't think so - but of course one can mess it up if one is so inclined
02:02<gil-galad>mm don't think so.. it even appears to me it is easier than others
02:03<balthasar>thank you... thank you all very much. Sorry to bother.
02:04<gil-galad>if you're total newbie in linux, why don't you use some ubuntu distro to build knowledhe, then switch to debian ! :)
02:04<balthasar>I`m using antiX right now... seems good, not so easy, but very fast.
02:05<gil-galad>in fact i'm kinda doing this : have ubuntu on my desktop and debian lenny on 2 laptops..

04:32<shaggy_>ugh. update-rc.d is utterly confusing. "sudo update-rc.d start 23 5 . stop 80 0 1 2 3 4 6 ." complains that i am not following the LSB defualts and writes S23ssh scripts to rc directories for the standard. How can i force it to obey the command i have given it?
04:34<Pepper>k-man: in general: no, unattended updates might break your system. maybe an alerting system like update-notifier on a desktop or a cronscript informing about available updates on a server is better suited

04:35<Pepper>shaggy_: "man update-rc.d" ?

12:07<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add ONLY a <deb-src> line for sid to /etc/apt/sources.list 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. 23:08<VelvetElvis>hello all, my cd/dvd rom drive won't open. There's no disk in it and it's not mounted. Sticking a needle in the little hole does nothing. I'm pretty sure it's a HAL/udev/DeviceKit problem. Rebooting does no good. Any suggestions on how to get it open?
23:09<VelvetElvis>the eject command does nothing when run as user or root
23:09<VelvetElvis>it makes noise but doesn't open

23:11<yoshio>VelvetElvis, usually you can hit the button when the computer is booting from power-off to open the drive, should have nothing to do with the OS

23:13<kop>VelvetElvis: yoshio's recommendation works when you're in bios config too, I think, if you're having problems pressing the button at the right time.

23:14<VelvetElvis>I tried that when I rebooted and it didn't work but I'll try again and go into the bios config

23:43<sidracer>can anyone help me with my project?
23:43<sidracer>maybe some activity now? :)
23:44<sidracer>blarson, you there?
23:45<sidracer>grub2 is default grub and can boot windows xp fine? it'll see it automatically or do I have to manually edit ?
23:45<sidracer>I am not used to grub 2 yet
23:45<gsimmons>dpkg: grub2 config
23:45<dpkg>If all you want is to dual-boot Debian & Windows, just install the os-prober package and run update-grub. Otherwise, check /etc/default/grub, /etc/grub.d/* and (GRUB wiki)
23:45<sidracer>I suppose I shouldn't have any distros in a partition that use grub legacy then?

23:46<sidracer>dpkg, ok, thanks
23:46<dpkg>sidracer: you're welcome
23:47<sidracer>what do you mean, 'os-prober package', though
23:47<sidracer>sorry, maybe it is just late and i'm tired but ......
23:47<sidracer>update-grub... that's it, right? run as root and just that command?
23:48<sidracer>but, can I enlarge my partitions? Can i make my windows partition larger? I don't need a separate partition for grub, right?
23:49<sidracer>I was doing it before but i wouldn't know how to make one for grub2 anyway... it's okay to just install grub to mbr with debian sqeeze now?
23:49<kop>sidracer: dpkg is a bot
23:52<sidracer>kop: can you help me then? you're not a bot, right? ;-) kidding ;-o
