00:02<nadir>sidracer, what is the problem?
00:04<sidracer>problem is wanting to resize partitions
00:04<sidracer>which will 'break' current grub
00:05<sidracer>I haven't resized partitions for a while... if I resize the wndows one.... i guess I should google on that one
00:08<nadir>as long as the partitions keep the name grub should keep working.
00:08<nadir>do: "fdisk -l " now and "fdisk -l " after the resizing
00:08<nadir>If you use UUIDs you will need to use "blkid"
00:08<nadir>or "ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid"
00:09<nadir>on the one hand.
00:09<nadir>on the other: "update-grub"
00:09<nadir>(on the one hand was about /etc/fstab)

00:21<sidracer>i'm used to using fstab... UUID not so much but I've dealt with it before
00:21<sidracer>thanks, nadir
00:21<sidracer>for info/explanation
00:22<sidracer>i'm going to try the debian live media
00:22<sidracer>is it okay to install with it?
00:22<sidracer>i can't decide if i want to use gnome or kde ;)
00:24<nevyn>it's a preference. try whichever for a week then try the other for a week.
00:25<nevyn>work out which one irritates you less.
00:26-!-disinpho [] has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
00:26<nadir>installing from the installation CD is probably less trouble.
00:26<nadir>find out which one you prefer with a live-CD, do the installation from an installation CD
00:26<nadir>(that is what i would do)
00:28<sidracer>sounds like good advice, thanks
00:29<sidracer>i'm used to the install cds anyway
00:29-!-Lamber [~Lamber@] has joined #debian
00:29<sidracer>but, i haven't looked at the newest kde or gnome for a while
00:29<sidracer>so, i thought i'd look at the live media before going through the install...i dunno... i guess the installs don't take long ...
00:29*nevyn figgures both end up installed anyway and disk is cheap.
00:30<nevyn>I don't understand the whole be one or the other meme
00:30<sidracer>plus, i'm starting from scratch so i'll have enough disk space
00:30<nevyn>I tend towards a best of breed type solution
00:30<sidracer>i screwed up last time i configured my system... i had unallocated space of 100gb so i had extra space
00:31<sidracer>do apps of one de work okay in the other?
00:31<sidracer>i read that kde apps work a bit smoother in gnome than vice versa
00:31<sidracer>i guess i'll find out
00:32<sidracer>most of my fav. apps are kde ones, though
00:32<sidracer>anyway, my new resizing of partitions is the main project for me right now ;) i hope i don't screw up my drive!
00:33-!-paultag [] has joined #debian
00:33<nevyn>sidracer: /me always uses LVM
00:34<nadir>as long you are not on a very old PC using gtk-apps in KDE and the other way around should work.
00:34<nadir>that said: i would go for a dual-boot (one kde, one gnome) too.
00:35-!-smv [smv@] has joined #debian
00:35<sidracer>nadir, maybe i should do that
00:35<sidracer>what's a good size for the partition?
00:35<sidracer>what do you use?
00:35<sidracer>nevyn: i would like to use LVM but not familiar with it?
00:36<sidracer>is 50gb each enough?
00:36-!-disinpho [] has joined #debian
00:36<nadir>50 GB is a lot.
00:36<nevyn>sidracer: how many disks do you have?
00:36<sidracer>i want to use virtualbox in one of them, I thought i should use 100gb and have extra space
00:36<nadir>You use Vbox or another ....
00:36<nevyn>sidracer: use lvm for vbox's ;)
00:36<nadir>ah, you already said.
00:37<nadir>With Vbox 50 is not that much.
00:37<sidracer>my current os drive is 320gb
00:37<nadir>How much you need for Windows?
00:37<sidracer>nadir: yeah
00:37<nadir>i got 100GB partitions.
00:38<nadir>but i got 3 VBox-installations on each of them.
00:38<nevyn>sidracer: that's not the question.. how many drives are there?
00:38<nadir>Music is on a separate partition.
00:38<sidracer>nadir: I don't use windows much but i have ppl who use my windows computer or ask me windows questions and i always run out of windows room
00:38<sidracer>nevyn: you mean partitions?
00:38<nevyn>no physical spindles.
00:39<smv>i need help to decide what kind of RAM should buy. i have 512MB DDR, and 2 more free sockets. should i go for 2x512MB or for 1x1GB? here's the dmidecode output:
00:40<sney>always leave room for further upgrades
00:40-!-hardwalker [] has joined #debian
00:41<sidracer>nevyn: I dunno... it's a 1 platter drive
00:41-!-linkslice [] has joined #debian
00:41<nevyn>sidracer: so one?
00:41<nevyn>are you planning on adding more disks?
00:41<linkslice>sooooo, I've got a debian install disk
00:42<linkslice>that fails cd verification, is there a way I can use that for network install?
00:42<sidracer>well, there's one other drive in the computer but its' a separate deal right now... I need to see if there's any data on it I want... it's a 500gb drive but older gen. , i think
00:42<sidracer>nadir: any ideas?
00:42<linkslice>I do not have any more cdr, but this one gets as far as installing base-system before failing, so I think a network install would work, if possible
00:42<nadir>i for one would use: 20 for root, and 100 for windows/kde/gnome
00:43<nadir>that are 320, and the problem is solved.
00:43<nadir>anything but perfect, but at least a fast solution :-)
00:43<sidracer>i thought of resizing the windows partitions but only because they're full
00:43<nadir>20 for root is a heck lot, of course.
00:43<sidracer>what i really want to do is get a separate external drive for ntfs
00:44-!-coldfront [] has joined #debian
00:44<sidracer>nadir: oh, I should have a separate root partition?
00:44<nadir>not in each case.
00:44<sidracer>i usually have home and root in same that a bad idea?
00:44<nadir>some say yes, some say no.
00:44<nadir>i for one think it is ok.
00:45<smv>256MB /boot, 46GB /, 1GB /var/log, 3GB swap, 100%FREE /home
00:45<sidracer>nadir: yeah :) and so i don't know
00:45<nadir>how big is your Windows right now?
00:45<sidracer>mostly, i screw up in the install and forget to even set a separate root partition so i just leave it ;)
00:45<sidracer>20 gb and another 20gb ....something like that
00:46<nadir>ok, that is a bit small.
00:46-!-disinpho [] has quit [Quit: disinpho]
00:46<sidracer>i meant to have the 20gb as space for programs but somehow both partitions got full
00:46<smv>linkslice, you can check the CD's with md5sum
00:46<sidracer>yes, it's small
00:46<sidracer>i screwed up
00:46<nadir>i would go for something like 3x 100 gigs.
00:46<linkslice>smv, its fails the md5 check
00:47<nadir>either windows gnome/kde dual boot.
00:47-!-Unmensch [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
00:47<nadir>or three installlations: one windows, one gnome, one kde
00:47<linkslice>but is there a way I can switch it to network install? to fetch the packages and whatnot from a mirror?
00:47<smv>linkslice, which iso image you used? already burnt on the cd?
00:47-!-Unmensch [] has joined #debian
00:47<sidracer>nadir: Oh, I think I see what you're saying
00:47-!-coldfront [] has quit []
00:47<nadir>but if you use Vbox anyway.... i would go for dualboot. And test the other environment inVobx
00:47<linkslice>I have image 1
00:47<linkslice>already burned
00:47<sidracer>100gb - windows, 100gb - gnome, 100gb - kde... correct?
00:48<linkslice>and the built-in cd check fails, but I don't have any more disks
00:48<nadir>that is what i would do. Mainly cause it is easy.
00:48<sidracer>that means my root and /home is on same partition each then
00:48<nadir>in that case: yes.
00:49<sidracer>i have an external drive 1tb formatted ext3... i use it for my data i access with my linux os... is that a potential issue?
00:49<sidracer>if i format/install squeeze, it's ext4, right?
00:49*nevyn wouldn't bother with seperate partitions for kde and gnome..
00:49<nadir>i think you can chose.
00:49<nevyn>but it's your call.
00:49<sidracer>i have lots of space left
00:50<sidracer>nevyn: why not?
00:50<nevyn>sidracer: because they're just a bunch of libraries.
00:50<sidracer>nevyn: oh
00:50<nadir>100 windows, 100 debian, 100 backukp.
00:50<sidracer>well, it can be temp. until i decide which one i think i'll use more
00:50<sidracer>than if theres' an app of the other, i can just install it or something?
00:51<nevyn>the reality is there are great both
00:51<nevyn>and gnome apps run fine on kde and kde apps run fine on gnome.
00:52<nadir>yes. no problems.

00:52-!-MrFrood [] has joined #debian
00:52<sidracer>i guess it doesn't matter... maybe i should flip a coin
00:52<nadir>in the end it is you.
00:53<smv>linkslice, i'm not sure if you can use it as a netinstall, but i don't think so. those in #debian-boot might know exactly. i'd wait untill geting another CD or just use a USB stick instead.
00:53<sidracer>i won't put data on the os partition so i could change if i wanted
00:53<sidracer>i just didn't think it made sense to install both desktops but maybe that doesn't matter either
00:54<nadir>the menu gets a bit bloated.
00:54<nevyn>sidracer: all the simple apps are duplicated ksolitare vs gsolitare but the big apps like k3b and kdevelop vs openoffice are much more best of breed teritory
00:55<sidracer>nadir: yeah, that's an example of what i would like to avoid
00:56<sidracer>nevyn: my fav. apps are k3b, kaffeine, amarok... but, i also use openoffice... vlc...
00:56<sidracer>i don't know if there's any gnome apps i'd favor but rhythmbox has been suggested to me to try

16:47<jhutchins_lt>sidracer: However, if it's already formatted, especially to an alien filesystem, it'll skip it.

16:47<jhutchins_lt>Best to, yes.
16:47<jhutchins_lt>sidracer: Best to install Windows first as well.
16:47<sidracer>jhutchins_lt: well, I thought maybe both drives should have at least one windows partition for bios updates or whatever
16:48<jhutchins_lt>I do my bios updates off of a flash drive.

16:48<jhutchins_lt>sidracer: I haven't had a bootable Windows system since ~2004.
16:48<Nemoder>sidracer: whichever drive your bios is set to boot from first you should install windows on, when you install debian on the other drive it will write grub to the MBR of the first drive
16:49<sidracer>okay, that sounds better... I've usually done a typical multi-boot/dual-boot system
16:49<sidracer>it's annoying ;)
16:49<sidracer>Nemoder: that's confusing... if first drive has windows... where would grub go?
16:50<Nemoder>grub overwrites the windows MBR (512 bytes, not part of partition)

16:53<sidracer>I just need to access the current drives to make sure i have saved any data i still need
16:53<sidracer>will be a bit tricky because there's currently nowhere to put it ;)

16:54<sidracer>i have a windows/linux system on another drive but can't currently boot it... obviously, not seen as primary drive but linux on the other drive 'sees it'
16:54<sidracer>gparted 'recognizes/detects it'
16:54<Nemoder>that is another option, but you'ld have to go into the bios to change it every time you want to boot the other system, unless it has one of those quickboot menus
