02:44<RobbieThe1st>I've got a slight problem here. I have a two-disk raid-1 for my root partition. Recently, one of the two drives dropped out due to not being connected quite right. I'm trying to rebuild the array, but my -good- drive has three bad blocks on it, apparently.
02:44<RobbieThe1st>So, it rebuilds, but at the end it doesn't bring the new drive online.
02:45<RobbieThe1st>(Because the old drive has the bad-blocks). What should I do? I can use it with a single drive, yes, but how do I fix things?

03:03<RobbieThe1st>Hm... I've got a question - I have three SATA disks, all 640GB identical models. They are /dev/sda, b, and c respectively. One is connected via USB - How can I tell which it is?

03:07<devil>RobbieThe1st: do they also have the same partitioning?
03:07<devil>canyou mount them?
03:08<RobbieThe1st>And none of them seem to show up with 'lsusb'. Mounting... Yes. They are all part of two seperate MD software raids, one for the os and one for my data
03:08<RobbieThe1st>And as such, they are already mounted.
03:09<jm_>RobbieThe1st: what does this say: grep 1 /sys/block/*/removable
03:10<devil>hm, i dont know much of raids. mount should normaly show the usb disk as media/disk-1, as opposed to media/diskxpartx.
03:10<RobbieThe1st>SDD and SDE show up - My Nokia N900 mobile phones drives. No mention of SDA, B or C
03:11<RobbieThe1st>Changing the 1 to a 0 in that command gives me a bunch of drives, including SDA, B and C as well as MD0 and MD1
03:11<devil>RobbieThe1st: does fdisk -l see the drive?
03:11<RobbieThe1st>Yes it does
03:12<devil>and 'mount' does not give a clue?
03:12<RobbieThe1st>Hm... Nope.
03:12-!-mercutio22 [] has quit [Quit: leaving]
03:12<RobbieThe1st>I see /dev/md0, /dev/md1, but none of the others - they'd be dealt with through MD I think...
03:13<jm_>usb disks should show up with 1
03:15<RobbieThe1st>I'm assuming that it's not because all three are in /etc/fstab - I used to have all three hooked up via SATA ports until my mobo died on me
03:15<RobbieThe1st>And I had to replace it with one with two sata ports, and the third connected via USB
03:16-!-melmothX [] has joined #debian
03:16<RobbieThe1st>It worked perfectly for a few days, until one drive dropped(sdc). Upon doing some research, sda has some bad blocks, but sdb and sdc are clean
03:17-!-ant [] has joined #debian
03:17<jm_>you should also see in logs which drive is connected via USB
03:18<RobbieThe1st>Which logs?
03:18<jm_>uhm /var/log

03:18<jm_>syslog by default I guess
03:18<RobbieThe1st>Alright. Are there any keywords I can search for? 'usb' didn't turn up anything?
03:19<jm_>try this: zegrep 'usb.*new|sd ' /var/log/syslog*
03:20-!-reis__ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:22<RobbieThe1st>I got a -huge- amount of lines there. Restricting it to only the current syslog still gave me pages of lines.

03:29<RobbieThe1st>Hm... I've got 2GB swap partitions on each disk; could that be used? I'm betting the USB drive's speed is a lot slower than the other two
03:30<jm_>well just do this to test the speeds: dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=1M count=200
03:31<RobbieThe1st>Yup, there we go. 113mb/sec, 117mb/sec, and... 22.5mb/sec.
03:31<RobbieThe1st>It's sdc
03:32<jm_>yeah one can also find it from /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usb-storage, but it's a bit messy :)
03:33-!-freex [] has joined #debian
03:34<RobbieThe1st>Now for the interesting part: So, I've got these three drives. I have three partitions on each drive: 24GB for the OS, 2GB swap, and the rest Data. I've got two of the drives in raid-1 for the OS, and three in raid-5 for my Data.
03:35-!-Lethalman [] has joined #debian
03:35<RobbieThe1st>sda and sdc are my two OS raid-1 drives. Now, SDC dropped a day or so ago(USB burble, I guess). It won't rebuild - SDA, which it's running on, has bad blocks it seems.
03:36<RobbieThe1st>Seeing as I haven't heard the click of death, I'm guessing only non-critical data was stored in those blocks, and I think they are all in the first partition.
03:36<RobbieThe1st>What should I do?
03:37-!-delby [] has joined #debian
03:37<jm_>replace the drive and restore from backup?
03:38-!-fl0w [] has joined #debian
03:38<RobbieThe1st>Well, I'd like to salvage the drive, at least for a while - It's running OK, and I don't have a spare to replace it with now. Also, I don't really have a backup that'd do me much good
03:39<RobbieThe1st>On top of this, I have to wait and hope my data partition resync's, as it was dropped out too. And 600GB at 20mb/sec takes forever.
03:40-!-rabo [] has joined #debian
03:40<RobbieThe1st>Should I try badblocks or fsck on the remaining raid-1 partition while running from a LiveCD?
03:41<jm_>I would run it on /dev/sda1 or whatever the underlying partition is, you can run it in read-only mode while the os is running (but it's questionable if it makes sense while sync is going on)
03:41<rabo>hello, I want to know how to run compiz in debian squeeze, I have Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device, and as I read the problem derived from xserver-xorg-video-intel. Thanks in advance

03:46<RobbieThe1st>Oh, yea, you're right. I missed that
03:47<RobbieThe1st>Also, what about block-size? What size does e2fsck expect?
03:47-!-reis__ [~reis@] has joined #debian
03:48-!-skoliX [] has joined #debian
03:48<jm_>why do you care about that?
03:49<RobbieThe1st>Because I assume I'm going to need to run the output of badblocks through e2fsck when I'm done.
03:49<RobbieThe1st>Mainly because I have this feeling - after looking at the logs - that SDA has it's block-shifting table filled.
03:50-!-OkropNick [] has joined #debian
03:50<RobbieThe1st>And, if it's not needed, no harm done
03:50<jm_>I'd recommend replacing the drive instead if you still have warranty -- blocks size is probably the same as FS block size, dumpe2fs -h will tell you
03:52<RobbieThe1st>I'm pretty sure it's not under warranty - I got it cheap used as a spare a while back. I will replace it soon, though
03:52<tuxuser>does anybody here have a recommendation on a good wireless-n router (with gigabit lan).... cause my buffalo wzr-hp-g300nh is CRAPPY AS HELL ?
03:52<RobbieThe1st>That command shows me having a block size of 4096 for /dev/md1, though nothing(obviously) for /dev/sda1

03:53<jm_>yeah I am not quite sure how to fit this together with a md device
03:54<RobbieThe1st>It makes things interesting, that's for sure.
03:54<RobbieThe1st>I think I'll go with 4096, as I'll have to run e2fsck on the md device...

04:24<RobbieThe1st>Now, erm, I've got an interesting problem here. The bad blocks(all 21) of them are right near the end of my partition. I should be able to just shrink it a bit and avoid all the blocks... But it's part of a raid were dealing with here. How would I resize a raid-1?

04:33<RobbieThe1st>I just checked SDB and SDC, and they both give those same values, though... Note, however, that smartctl -a gives me a bunch of error-codes for SDA, but nothing for SDB or C

22:33<cthuluh>rpgdude: you're doing raid -> encryption -> lvm right?
22:34<cthuluh>you should probably set up raid first, since you need /boot to be outside the encrypted partition
22:35<Habstinat>So I'm trying to install Debian. I used the same CD to install it on a different computer, so the data is burned correctly. When I put the CD in on my other computer though running Windows 7, right away I get an error about the installer, saying that it can't find the C: drive or something along those lines. I chose to continue anyways. The install completed and there were no more hiccups, and then it asked me to reboot. I chose

22:39<Habstinat>"I chose "Reboot Now", and my computer took an abnormally long but not rediculously long time to shut off. When I rebooted, I was presented with both the Debian Installer and Windows 7 at the boot screen. When I try to select the Debian installer, I get, and then I am forced to choose again.

22:44<Habstinat>cthuluh: For some reason, I can't seem to get any other OS installed on this laptop. It's a ThinkPad W700ds. cthuluh: What do you mean? I rebooted before using the installation program for Windows.

22:46<cthuluh>that's what I don't understand: "installation program for windows"?
22:46<Habstinat>cthuluh: I tried to install Ubuntu as well, but I was only able to get it running via Wubi (which I don't want to do in the long run) and even after posting my problem to 5 different help sites nobody was able to get anywhere
22:46<cthuluh>you can install debian while running windows?
22:46-!-megaf [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
22:47<Habstinat>cthuluh: If you're in Windows and you pop the CD in, a program will pop up that basically sets everything up for you and when you reboot, the true Debian installer will be part of the Windows bootloader (I think?) and from there, you can do whatever you want.
22:48<cthuluh>yes, that's what I am reading
22:48<rpgdude>cthuluh: i think i can setup raid1 on a new disk and setup encrypted lvm
22:48<rpgdude>then copy my files from my old drive
22:49<rpgdude>then add the old drive to the raid1 array
22:49<cthuluh>rpgdude: exactly
22:49<rpgdude>this is assuming i can create a raid1 with just one disk
22:49<rpgdude>i dont see why not
22:50<rpgdude>do you think i should upgrade to squeeze before attempting this?
22:50-!-Judas_PhD [] has quit [Quit: This is a quitting message]
22:52<cthuluh>rpgdude: yes
22:52<cthuluh>and yes you can create an raid 1 array with only one drive
22:53<Habstinat>cthuluh: So what's your opinion? I ran a couple hardware tests a week ago and they all passed, so that can't be the issue.

22:57<cthuluh>Habstinat: if I were you, I: 1) would try to recover my windaube install with a windaube CD. 2) would boot windows and make some free space for debian. then "unfragment" my windows partition. 3) boot the debian CD and install from it. 4) enjoy debian
22:58<cthuluh>but if you have a tied up machine, this is going to be hard
22:59<cthuluh>Habstinat: I've never seen any of them, but some vendors design their bioses in order not to boot any other OS than the one sold with the hardware

The regular Ubuntu installer wouldn't boot at all from USB, but the "alternate installer" that's text based and meant for older machines did boot. However, about halfway through the install I got a fatal error about not having a kernel, it was really weird. I took a picture of it, and the people at #ubuntu just told me to abort the installation at that point, so I did.
