00:16<blubaustin>and I was wondering if there was a way to fix that

01:23<blubaustin>I think it just needs the file created....which I wish I knew how to do
01:24<kd123>do I need to have a live cd that is built with lvm2??? or is there another way?
01:24<gsimmons>kd123: Have you run "vgscan" and "vgchange -ay"?
01:26<kd123>I've run 'vgscan' and it sees the volume group but not 'vgchange -ay' what's that do?

01:28<kd123>gsimmons: you are my hero! :D the vgchange -ay mapped them :)
01:28<gsimmons>kd123: From its man page: "makes the logical volumes known/unknown to the kernel" (in this case, known).
01:28<kd123>gsimmons: thanks again :)
01:29<blubaustin>I dont get why I can't just create the missing file, but I dont know what needs to be in it.
01:31<Tiff>err doesnt have a sid branch, shoudlnt even be in your sources
01:31<blubaustin>alright so I should delete it correct
01:32<blubaustin>leave volatile?
01:32<Tiff>..if you need it
01:32<Tiff>you use clamav, etc?
01:32<blubaustin>dont know what it is lol
01:32<Tiff>volatile just pushes updates that need to occur very frequently, such as AV databases
01:33<blubaustin>ah ok
01:33<blubaustin>well when I do a apt-get update it says its not found...volatile that is for sid

01:36<blubaustin>oh lol I just barely installed debian been using ubuntu and wanted to try debian again thank you so much
01:37<blubaustin>Now my next question is... about the nvidia 260.19.21 driver
01:37<Tiff>blah theres so much online about graphical driver issues to search through :P
01:37<blubaustin>ya well mine is weird
01:38<blubaustin>says that my kernel configuration doesn't match even though it is a stock kernel, and that my kernel was compiled using a different gcc version
01:38<blubaustin>did that in lenny too

01:40-!-simonrvn [] has joined #debian
01:41<Tiff>well err
01:42<Tiff>you prolly need to install an earlier gcc version which the kernel was compiled with and use that version for the building of the nvidia kernel modules
01:42<Tiff>aptitude install gcc-4.1
01:43<Tiff>then in a terminal: export CC=gcc-4.1
01:43<Tiff>and run it
01:43<Tiff>something like that :)
01:43<blubaustin>okie dokie I'll try it

02:38<Sydney>hello, everyone...
02:39<Sydney>I'm a debian newbie, and I'm looking for some help in understanding an aspect about packages management
02:40<Sydney>I'm using squeeze, and have a package I need to install...have two choices, an older one from the repository, and a newer one from the author, which provides tarballs
02:41<Sydney>I usually tend to prefer repo as I would not have to remember each time to check if there are updates around for that package...

02:49<zy>Sydney: download the .deb is safer and easier in you case imho.
02:53<Sydney>that's what I thought too...the only doubt I have is about managing it...I mean, I use gdebi to install it, and I might predict I will not have dep. problems...but, what about if I'd like to uninstall it, at a later time?
02:56<zy>I do not known gdebi, you may install with `dpkg -i', and if you do not like it, choose `force version' in synaptic to reinstall the one from repo.
02:56-!-tommytwo [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:58<jester45>Sydney, you can use apt pinning to allow using less stable repos
02:59<jester45>Sydney, /msg dpkg pinning if you want some links
02:59<Sydney>I read about pinning in apt manual, but wasn't very clear to particular, with pinning, am I going to mess the things up or it will update/install only the packages I am indicating?

08:27<cthuluh>Sim0n__: what are you going to do if you ever can't login with ssh anymore?
08:27<nevyn>getty's are needed for "real" terminals. (including confusingly virtual terminals)
08:28<Sim0n__>cthuluh: if that ever fails, i'd throw a monitor and keyboard on it.
08:28<Sim0n__>Just, while its working, those arent needed.
08:29<Sim0n__>I suppose, what im asking is, what exactly is getty and tty, in plain and simple english, as google/random forums are just confusing and contridicting.
08:29<nevyn>Sim0n__: but without getty there will be nothing on the screen when you "throw an monitor and keyboard on it"
08:29*smv would keep only 2, just in case, and disable the others

15:42<chealer>Arrowmaster: unstable is used as a testbed for what's going to testing. if versions not intended for testing are uploaded to unstable, that prevents fixing a problem in testing via unstable, the fix would need to go to testing-proposed-updates instead, which is rare.

15:44<Mr_Speedy>I have an unusual situation: I connect to the internet via a VPN connection. As far as I know Debian 5 after install does not have support for making VPN connections until you install something (like openVPN). I need to download what I need via Windows, then reboot into Debian and install it, to get my internet working. Any tips/suggestions?
15:44<abrotman>the freeze does affect unstable
15:47<petemc>Mr_Speedy: depending on the vpn type, vpnc may work for you
15:48<Mr_Speedy>I need to make a PPTP tunnel
15:48<chealer>Mr_Speedy: how did you install Debian?

15:48<Mr_Speedy>I'll check out vpnc thanks
15:49<Mr_Speedy>via a CD I downloaded through windows
15:49<Mr_Speedy>I could not connect to the net via installation
15:51<chealer>Mr_Speedy: I'm not sure what's on CD 1, but you may want another CD or the first DVD instead. you'll need pptp-linux and perhaps network-manager-pptp.
15:52<Mr_Speedy>I'll search for those on the Debian site then... I can download as many CDs / DVDs as it takes
