05:13<amitz>what's a recommended fs for backup? There are 2 types of backup I'm aware of, rsnapshot file where it keeps all the file as it is, and duplicity type where it consolidates backup into large volumes. I'm concern about reliability (when backup process crashed) and speed (create and restore operation) .
05:13<amitz>I thought ext2 should be perfect but it is surprisingly slow, no comparions to a baseline though.

05:22<twb>I have had non-negligible success with both rsync+cp -al (via rsnapshot) and rsync+zfs snapshotting (on osol9).
05:22<twb>I would *like* to use squashfs for archival purposes, but I've yet to do so in production.
05:22<amitz>will the fs: ext4 help or it will be unnecessary overhead, with journal and all.
05:23<twb>Note that mksquashfs' block-dedupping effectively gives you block-level equivalent of cp -al's file-level incrementality
05:23<amitz>I may be pushing my knowledge here, squashfs is the fs, right?
05:23<twb>amitz: if you're using rotating media and you do not have a UPS, you ALWAYS want a journal. In other circumstances, you still usually want a journal :-)

14:06<kop>ZeroEnna: I'm never clear on whether the kmuto installer installs a new kernel or something more stock. Clearly you need a new kernel if you can run the installer but can't run the installed system. (Or maybe you just need to install the firmware.) In any case you can use the install disk as a rescue cd to boot and install the stuff you need.

16:45<ompaul>you can use a utility in windows (no idea don't use that stuff myself) to resize that ntfs partion then you could install fresh into that, and then copy the stuff you want from the other partition
