00:47<Ironictiger>I have an interesting dilemma. I want debian on this computer. I use a macbook, but it's been so long since I've touched it, it no longer has os x and it has a windows 7 trial that restarts every 2 hours. Where would be a good guide to learn how to install this?
00:49-!-MeCooL [mecool@] has joined #debian
00:49<dpkg>There are a myriad different ways to install Debian. See for a list of images. Ask me about <install guide> and <d-i> for detailed instructions. (If you've never installed Debian before, you should read the install guide.)
00:49-!-pat93 [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:50<Ironictiger>yeah I've never installed debian before. Thanks for the website link retro.
00:51<retrospectacus>yep just install debian on the mac. I've never tried a mac but debian supports the mac architectures
00:55<Ironictiger>so for intel macs, you'd use the i386 right?
00:56<Arrowmaster>i386 or amd64 i think
00:57<Arrowmaster>i didnt think any intel macs are 32bit only

01:05<Ironictiger>okay I'm a noob. when I download i386 I don't know how to burn the image to a disk. Are these directions the correct way to do it?
01:05<kd123>retrospectacus: yes, I have heard of the pool lol :) I was just wondering if anyone had a better idea of its release date.
01:05<kd123>Ironictiger: you are using windows now right?
01:06<Ironictiger>yes, windows 7
01:06<kd123>yeah do you have Nero installed? that will burn isos
01:06<Ironictiger>I do not.
01:07<kd123>ok let me think... when I used windows I used a free program to burn stuff... give me a sec to look it up

10:02<Silicium01>I need to do this temporarily to testing, need to have php change system date in a script
10:03<abrotman>why would you want apache to change the date?
10:04<Rovanion>I also have an issue where my sound gets interrupted once in a while, and I need to pause and then resume the track to get sound in my speakers again.
10:04<Rovanion>Either that or wait for the next track
10:04<gsimmons>Rovanion: IIRC, snd_maestro3 is considered "unsuspendable", at least according to the hibernate script.
10:05<Rovanion>gsimmons, That means that I pritty much have to reload alsa each time. And if that works I'm happy
10:05<Silicium01>abrotman, long story short: I'm running script that depends on system date to do a calculation. Loop is 100 000 long and I need to step 1 week ahead every 1000
10:06<Silicium01>abrotman, There is no php workaround for this, so I need to allow (I think www-data) user to change date via date --set
10:06<abrotman>whoa .. uhm .. that seems like a horrible idea

10:09<rpetre>Silicium01: there are some nasty classes of side-effects when messing with the system date
10:09<rpetre>most likely it's worth it to investigate overriding those classes
10:09<abrotman>Silicium01: system emails? filesystem writes in the future?
10:10<rpetre>various lockfiles going screwy
10:10<Silicium01>what if I do it on a virtual machine? that should work right?
10:11<abrotman>why not just fix the script to not change the system date ?
10:11<rpetre>Silicium01: how is the system date used?
10:12<Silicium01>I'll go try my best to see if I can somehow mess with those classes. If I fail, I'll come back and maybe do this on a virtual machine and then trash it.

I've got two screens, but only on one of them there is panel (with hour, programs, options etc.) and it is on this secondary screen. How to place it on my main screen.

13:38<jorge909_>Hi all. This is my first time in irc; I have a question about bash scripting, is this the right place to ask?
13:38<ompaul>gabrieluk: what you are suggesting is not great, the idea is as follows, you use the packages that are updated by debian, if you fail to do this you have a delta (i.e. a gap) they get security updates. the more applications you install randomly the more unstable you will make your install. Never a great idea.
13:38<EmleyMoor>jorge909_: If you are running bash on a Debian system, yes.
13:38<rss>gabrieluk: you could try the squeeze release. that is now frozen and likely to become stable soon
13:39<devil>gabrieluk: there is a iceweasel 4-beta version in a mozilla repository, also there is chromium-browser

13:42<ompaul>gabrieluk: how about this, get used to the way that debian behaves before you go changing things, so what is broken that you feel that the other package is better, remembering that debian gets security updates and works together
13:42<EmleyMoor>gabrieluk: If you want your system to remain reasonably stable, use as much of its original packages as you can - and consider backports if you simply must go newer
13:42<adarnimrod>jorge909: I don't know of one, maybe the gnu mailing list, or if there are any gnu irc channels.

14:21<dvs>rss: the load average is the average number of prcesses waiting to be executed.

14:24<jordanm>rss: 1 is not a max load average and does not indicate a full loaded CPU

19:21<Golfgeo>Hi all
19:22<Golfgeo>How does un unpin a package on the commandline?
19:22<Golfgeo>* unpin...
19:22<abrotman>!held back
19:22<dpkg>well, kept back is when packages have not been upgraded even though newer versions are available. This happens if dependencies cannot be resolved, packages are on hold or you used "upgrade" not "full-upgrade" and old packages need to be removed as part of the upgrade. To investigate, "aptitude -s install <kept-package>". Also see Ask me about <full-upgrade>.
19:22-!-babilen [~babilen@] has quit [Quit: leaving]
19:22-!-babilen_ [~babilen@] has quit []
19:22<dpkg>hold is probably a status flag that tells the package manager not to automatically upgrade a package. To hold a package: 'echo <package> hold|dpkg --set-selections'. It is also possible to use aptitude: 'aptitude hold <package>'. Note that the hold flag set using aptitude might be ignored by other package managers (i.e. Update Manager and Synaptic), but aptitude will respect the hold set in the dpkg database.

23:59<cozminsky>prem, only the ip address, I'd probably go with a extension like livehttp headers
