03:19<deux>could someone explain to me the updates system in debian (as in - is it possible for debian to get new kernels?, new
03:19<dEhiN>there is a repository stored on various mirror servers
03:20<dEhiN>and debian uses apt to access these official debian repositories
03:20-!-Xeross [] has joined #debian
03:20<deux>so is there a way to know whether a kernel is coming or not in an update?
03:20<dEhiN>and these repositories will have various updates, depending upon which branches you select
03:20<deux>to the stable branch
03:20<deux>sorry i didn't mention that
03:21<dEhiN>the best way is probably use aptitude - the graphical ui to apt
03:21<dEhiN>either run apt-get update and then aptitude, or aptitude and then hit u to update
03:21<deux>is there a way to know when diff stuff are coming down to stable?
03:22<deux>cause i saw the latest stable kernel is 2.6.37
03:22<deux>could i expect it to come to stable as an update?
03:22-!-Max_452 [] has joined #debian
03:22<dEhiN>um, probably via the various mailing'd want to be on some of the dev or bug mailing lists though, not the regular user lists
03:23<dEhiN>what's the current kernel in stable now?
03:23<dEhiN>probably, not sure how quickly it will be added in, but if you've got your apt sources set to get stable updates, you'll get it
03:24<gsimmons>deux: Your questions are largely addressed in . Also ask dpkg about overview and squeeze-updates (e.g. /msg dpkg overview).
03:24<dEhiN>are you just asking or is a specific reason you want the 2.6.37 kernel?
03:25<dEhiN>if you know the latest kernel has updated drivers that your system needs, you can wait it out, or try getting the kernel sources and compiling and installing it yourself
03:25-!-massmc [] has joined #debian
03:25<dEhiN>apt will add it to your local repository cache

03:52<Sydney>hi, everyone
03:52<Sydney>just a silly question...anyone knows about possible corrupt testing images on debian servers?
03:53<Sydney>I mean, I downloaded two different times, with two different means (http and jigdo) the amd64 testing image dvd1...
03:53<Sydney>I burned it 4 times, even with different burners...
03:54<Sydney>and when installing I always get a packages.gz corruption error when installing the base system...
03:54<AhiTTy>I got the same issue
03:54<AhiTTy>I thought it was my burner flaking out
03:54<AhiTTy>shsums match and everything

03:55<AhiTTy>somthing is bork
03:55<bqin>this is a known bug
03:55<Sydney>well, I tried 2 different burners, but with the same result
03:55<bqin>may be fixed latter
03:55<AhiTTy>grrr why the fk can't the launcher use my $game script
03:55<bqin>you can download stable version
03:55<cahoot>just use a stable netinst and go from there?
03:55<Sydney>ok, I I will get the same error even with the CD version instead of the dvd
03:55-!-massmc [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
03:57<Sydney>ok, just a question then...if I install a stable release, how might I then switch to the testing...I mean, I suppose it won't be just a matter of changing sources.list
03:58<AhiTTy>I did that
03:58<AhiTTy>I even got k2.6.38rc7 running
03:58<AhiTTy>no fglrx tho

03:59<Sydney>the last time I tried to do something like that I ended up with a mess (my fault) I would like to know how to do it properly before trying it again...
04:00<AhiTTy>all I did was add the srcs
04:00<AhiTTy>and then updated everything by hand
04:00-!-Volley [~worf@] has joined #debian
04:00<AhiTTy>got gnome-shell 3 from the git even and compiled it
04:01<Sydney>so, you added the sources, then apt-get update...
04:01<AhiTTy>buggy as fuck without fglrx tho
04:01<Sydney>and then in aptitude you manually selected each package? or what?
04:01<AhiTTy>just updated the ones I was gonna use

04:05<Sydney>cahoot, the only time I tried it was a year ago, I had just turned to debian, but the mess I did burn me, so never tried it again :) so, as far as I've understood, it is a matter of changing the sources to testing and then aptitude update and aptitude upgrade

16:27<davetoo>That won't always work either :)
16:28<mom>davetoo: oh . . . why, causes memory leaks?
16:28<davetoo>no, if the process is in an uninterruptible sleep (like a hung NFS mount) it won't get/respond to the signal.
16:28<davetoo>I don't know the exact mechanics.
16:29<davetoo>I think :)
16:29<mom>davetoo: oh, what kill command would you use then?
16:29<davetoo>reboot :)
16:29<cthuluh>mom: never use -9
16:30<mom>cthuluh: why not? regular kill didnt work
16:30<davetoo>I may be full of crap, too... it's been a while
16:30<cthuluh>mom: with -9, the process has *no* way to terminate properly
16:30<cthuluh>mom: so it could leave crappy data, files, and so on, behind him
16:30<mom>cthuluh: what should you do after a -15
16:30<cthuluh>try -1, -2, etc
16:30<davetoo>yeah, but if it's killing your cpu...
16:31<davetoo>sometimes it's the last step before a hardware reset :)
16:31<cthuluh>the only situation when a signal can't kill a process is when this process is in a D state
16:31<cthuluh>in this state, it doesn't consume CPU
16:31<davetoo>Solaris has a way to force a kill but...

16:35<cthuluh>well, read the description of those signals, but -1 -2 and -3 are enough usually

23:00<tux0>what is the point of mmv when you have a shell?
23:00<tux0>am I missing something? just read the description about it
23:01<sney>the second sentence would seem to explain it
23:01<sney>I suppose you could script that behaviour but is it really worth it when a tool exists
23:01<sney>also, a lot of people (me) have really bad memories and can't do a lot of scripting without constantly checking the reference
23:02<tux0>well e.g. mmv file.[1-7] is mv file.{1..7} using 'shell scripting'
23:03<tux0>for something like that it seems rediculous
23:03<sney>This multiple action is performed safely, i.e. without any
23:03<sney> unexpected deletion of files due to collisions of target names with existing filenames or with other target names.
23:03<tux0>is that not what mv -i and maybe other switches/options are for?
23:04<tux0>maybe if you wanted to automate that and not have it be interactive I could understand maybe (never read the entire manpage for mv)
23:04<sney>maybe it handles it without having to ask every time. I've never used it, that's just what it says
