01:03<Mortchek>Hi. I'm trying to install a newer version of pianobar, but there doesn't seem to be anything newer in squeeze-backports than what's already available. How else can I upgrade it?

01:07<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.

02:05<Gerowen>Let's say I have an FTP server, (ProFTPD) and I want to implement a quota on one of the users so the folder they see when they log in cannot exceed a certain size. What's the best approach?
02:05-!-daniel [] has joined #debian
02:05<dpkg>[quota] a Debian package for managing disk space quotas. It can be made to cap space usage by certain uids or gids; see /usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt/Quota.gz (in the "doc-linux-nonfree-text" package) for a (slightly out-of-date) introduction.

02:06<dpkg>extra, extra, read all about it, dpkg is the program used by Debian to install and remove packages, "man dpkg". Also ask me about <reference>. The main info bot in #debian is also called dpkg; ask me about <dpkgbot>.
02:06<sney>most of them. but you should really do /msg dpkg keyword

19:24<dpkg>Before asking in here or on the <debian-user> mailing list, you should read the Installation Guide, or if you already have Debian installed, the Debian Reference. Ask me about <ig>, <overview>, <reference>, <refcard>, <docs>, <manuals>, <fundamentals>, <newbiedoc>, <faq>, <unix lessons>, <general cli tutorial> (e.g. in your IRC client, type /msg dpkg reference).
19:25<retrospectacus>rijads: we can help you if you have a specific problem. Have you installed debian yet?

19:26<f0rk>retrospectacus: find /usr/share/doc -name '*conffile*' yields nothing
19:26<Gerowen>I have an FTP server, a user has a username/password on that server, it's running proftpd as the server, what is the best option for allowing the user to change their own password remotely? I'd like to not have to give them SSH privileges.
19:27<rijads>maybe someone will have some good book to tell me to go through it, for basic actions in debian

19:44<sney->if you can get another hdd easily you might as well

21:41<Gerowen>For those that saw my questions earlier, I figured out the best solution to allowing a user to change their password remotely while limiting their access to the server. lshell is a python-based shell interface with a simple config file that allows you to limit visible folders and commands that can be executed. I just added him to the SSH users list, and set his default shell as lshell.

22:36<dardevelin>vrkalak, not yet... I avoid having to register in lots of websites. Things are too dispersed
22:37<mom>i wonder if it is the same bug that effected both in cups
22:37<vrkalak>dardevelin, there are a couple of former Ubuntu-based distros that have converted to a Debian-base (crunchbang and linuxmint-debian) ... but I am not aware of how hard that was and what kind of hoops they had to jump through?
22:37<dardevelin>I'm on journey to get rid of proprietary software and to get the old of my data again
22:38<dardevelin>so i'm running debian wheezy as my main OS. Been about a 1year on LMDE and decided its the time to go to the daddy
22:38<dardevelin>when i found out of this quickly got really interested so i used my external hd to boot ubuntu and have it a try
22:38<vrkalak>dardevelin, have you tried a fresh install of a new Debian? from a net.install or a DebianLive CD?
22:39<dardevelin>i installed squeez the updated the sources list to wheezy
