00:55<Daisy>i was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me troubleshoot a sftp issue>
00:55<benonsoftware>Whats the matter with it?
00:56<Daisy>i created a user Webmaster who is part of the group Developer
00:57<Daisy>I want to enable the group Developer so that they can upload into /var/www
01:00<Daisy>this is my sshd.config file
01:01<seeS>ok, so what happens daisy?

01:04<sney>touch is a command

01:05<Daisy>let me try it

01:06<Daisy>i tried sudo -u webmaster touch /var/www/index.html
01:06<Daisy>but i got back sudo not found
01:06<seeS>ok, so you dont have that sudo command, strange i thought it was common
01:07<seeS>so what is the owner and permission of that directory?
01:07<seeS>ls -ld /var/www
01:07<Daisy>drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Nov 29 14:28 /var/www
01:07<seeS>ok, theres your problem
01:07<seeS>its owned by user root, group root
01:08<seeS>user can do everything, anyone else can read and list
01:08<seeS>ie download and look in the directory
01:09<seeS>what to do next depends on your situation, i think you have a special group for uploaders

01:13<Daisy>i went through it
01:13<Daisy>he told me to change it root:root 755

01:14-!-TaitenP [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:14<seeS>ahh, it checks for that
01:15<seeS>do the files need to go into /var/www? could they go into /var/www/whatever/ ?
01:16<Daisy>essentially i want to allow the user Webmaster to do anything he wants in /var/www
01:16<seeS>with a chroot you cannot
01:16<seeS>ssh chroot needs root:root 755
01:17<seeS>but your uploading needs root:Developer 775
01:17-!-scientes [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]

01:18-!-OralB [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:19<Daisy>i followed you up until root:developer
01:19<Daisy>past that i'm scratching my head
01:20<seeS>the way to do it is have a chroot directory and an uploading directory below it
01:20-!-fisted_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:20<seeS>make /var/www is root:root 755
01:20<seeS>make /var/www/data root:Developer 775
01:20<Daisy>so a directory within a directory
01:20<seeS>users get chrooted to /var/www ssh checks the perms are root:root 755; yes they are, so ssh is happy
01:21<Daisy>could you point me somewhere to change the /var/www root:root?
01:21<seeS>to make a file, the user needs write permissions. as he is in Developer and Developer can write in /var/www/data it is possible
01:22<seeS>daisy: it is that now
01:22<Daisy>so now i have to chown something else?
01:22<seeS>mkdir /var/www/data
01:22<seeS>chgrp Developer /var/www/data
01:22<seeS>chmod 0775 /var/www/data
01:24<Daisy>seeS: if i make these changes, will /var/www still be accessible as the dir for the website?
01:26<seeS>if you want the uploader to change everything you need to move the website below the /var/www/data directory
01:26<seeS>ie the chgrp directory and documentroot in apache are the same

01:28<seeS>it means the uploader can see everything in /var and thats bad
01:28<seeS>you could try symlinking
01:29<kilelme>Daisy:maybe you can give permission for folder 755 and the file is 644... what kind cms you use?

02:11<seeS>i suspect they want the stuff in the tar file to be in /opt/fog-setup

09:46<SynrG>or else you could try to understand which patch fixed it by looking at changelogs and/or upstream revision control system history, extract the patch, download the squeeze source and try patching it yourself.
09:47<SynrG>ompaul: which is interesting, but not relevant unless giardo is trying to compile gatling ...
09:47<SynrG>giardo: is it gatling you're trying to compile, or something else?

09:57<SynrG>giardo: anyway, as i said, two options: try to patch squeeze binutils yourself, or if that's beyond you, file additional info on the bug requesting a backport. otherwise, try building your program on wheezy (you could use debootstrap to create a wheezy chroot and then compile the program inside that, for example)

16:06<sney>if you are associated to the network, but need an ip address, then you need to request an ip address. this is normally done with dhclient, or a network management program of some kind.
16:07<blast007>if you're getting the login portal page, you should have an IP already...
16:07<sney>and then you log into the gateway, pay their wifi fee, and enjoy your limited internet access
16:07<daemonkeeper>As sney says, such networks are open (unencrypted) and you need to authenticate through RADIUS or by challenge request through a web browser which acts as proxy.

16:12<Shidash>Oh, just got one
16:12<Shidash>Yeah, that was what I did
16:13<sney>ompaul: they usually do it with 2 subnets, one where everything is redirected with a transparent proxy to the gateway/payment page, then afterwards it whitelists your mac address on the dhcp server for the given time frame and pushes a new ip... not high tech, but it works for restricting internet access to those who have paid
16:13-!-Shidash [~shidash@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
16:13<daemonkeeper>sney: VLANs, not only subnets.
16:14<daemonkeeper>And, on the switch, they are using RADIUS to identify authenticated (i.e. paid) clients by MAC or something similar.
16:14<sney>I've only ever seen it done with subnets. Maybe airports step it up a bit. but that's -offtopic
16:15<daemonkeeper>sney: Well, sure, you need a different subnet - that's a routing issue. If you're curious I can give you more technical background in #d-ot

22:32<Theta>Hey guys.
22:32<daev>hi Theta
22:32<Theta>I was wondering if you guys could help me out adding a virtual network device under eth0.
22:33<Theta>I've got the IP but I'm not sure how to get the netmask.
22:34<nevyn>how did you get the IP?
22:34<Theta>It was given by my hosting provider.
22:34<jordanm>that depends on the network setup. you will need to ask your network administrator
22:34-!-Katai [~xxx@] has quit [Quit: There is a Bold line between Computer geek and Just plain sad. Computer Geek <b>|</b> Just Plain Sad.]
22:34<jordanm>or ISP
22:35<Theta>Ok I'll ask them, was hoping I could figure it out since that would be faster :).
22:35<nevyn>the provider should have given you a few other details
22:35<nevyn>like the default gateway
22:35<Theta>Yeah usually I get that info.
22:35<nevyn>unless it's on a network that you're already on
22:36<nevyn>like if it's an additional ip address for another ssl vhost and you already have an ip in that network.
22:36<Theta>I do have a main IP which I'm using now.
22:37<Theta>Does this mean anything? eth0: B01N01:Gi2/43 (network)
22:37<Theta>But the IPs I was assigned are completely different than my main IP at all blocks.

23:20<amitz>another livecd question given the timezone of #debian-live. but may be a general debian question. how to check if livecd root account is enabled or not (that is, accessible using su)?

23:53<nutron>I want to use osd_cat to display info on the screen when minor events happen, though, I'm having difficulty selecting a font. xfontsel seems sparsely populated when I browse through the different menu items, yet I know I have quite a few ttf fonts available on the machine. I need it in the format that xfontsel provides as that's what osd_cat takes its font parameter as. Any suggestions?
