02:27<dpkg>well, xinerama is where you have several monitors but only one logical desktop -- XFree86 4.0 and have it. . This functionality is provided by RandR in recent Xorg drivers, ask me about <randr>.
02:27<jm_>so ask dpkg about randr and xrandr and you shall get some info

02:57<cardamon>Where does vim look for it's .vimrc file when I run it with root permissions?
02:57<holsta>cardamon: ~/.vimrc
02:57<cardamon>holsta: except where is ~/ when you're root?
02:58<jm_>~ is always your home dir, regardless of the username
02:58<holsta>cardamon: vim ~/.vimrc will work as root. ~ is your homedir.
02:58<holsta>Regardless of username.
02:58<Nemoder>you can even type 'whereis ~'
02:58<lp>cardamon: ~ is expanded by the shell to $HOME
02:59<jm_>Nemoder: that doesn't give full path, or does it for you?
02:59<Nemoder>jm_: oh heh that's just for binaries sorry
02:59<holsta>echo ~ gives the correct path here.
02:59-!-liverwurst [] has joined #debian
03:00<lp>echo ~ gives the full path just because the shell expands ~ before echo gets to see it… ~ doesn't really exist anywhere (try echo "~")
03:00<cardamon>Then why no syntax highlight when I $ sudo vim .vimrc ; when $ vim .vimrc does highlight?
03:01<cardamon>On the other hand, the sudo'd version isn't stuck in compatibility mode anymore, so I'm happy about that.

03:03<cardamon>It's same user.
03:04<lp>cardamon: as root, type cat ~root/.vimrc and cat ~yournormaluser/.vimrc - that's why… each user has his own $HOME, and his own config files

03:06<cardamon>jm_: Thank you. It's looking in $HOME/.vimrc, which doesn't exist. $HOME for root expands to /root
03:07<lp>cardamon: if you want sytax highlighting for all users, including root, do it in /etc/vim/vimrc.local

03:14<cardamon>How about symlinks something across permissions? Like I want to symlink /home/$USER/.vimrc and /etc/vim/vimrc.local so that one changes the other and vice versa. Or would a hard link be better? but the user local one would have $USER's write permissions and the /etc/ located one would have root write permissions.

09:36<babilen>cabpa: Thirdly you have a couple of pinned packages (they are mostly pinned to the version in squeeze, but libva1 is not) -- It looks as if you already installed packages from testing which has most likely broken your system. How to proceed depends on the number/nature of packages you installed from testing.
09:37<cabpa>babilen, so should uninstall libval1?

Reinstall squeeze and never touch testing/unstable again 2. If you only have a very small number of unimportant packages installed from testing you might be able to revert to stable 3. Completely switch to testing
09:41<cabpa>babilen, how should i replace testing packages with stable packages?

19:32<Jake_D>just installed 6.0.3, with gui etc. no gui at boot. 'startx' -> getting errors: dlopen nouveau failed... should revert to software rendering, that's fine according to my research. touchpad failed as well "unable to query" -- starting X leave a black screen. any ideas -- dodgy installation perhaps?
