05:25<Flitzpiepe>Ah i c
05:25<SynrG>aptitude is not magic. but it does have more useful error output
05:26<Flitzpiepe>Notmally i do minimal install and just get evrythi g fresh fromnetwork
05:26<SynrG>also a plain 'apt-cache policy' may reveal something
05:27<SynrG>i'm betting on a broken sources.list as jm_ indicated
05:27<jm_>probably missing main mirror entry
05:28<Flitzpiepe>So how to be sure whar is correct sources.list?
05:28<SynrG>pastebin please
05:28<jm_>man sources.list shows it
05:28<jm_>(under some examples:)
05:28<themill>dpkg: tell Flitzpiepe about make squeeze sources.list
05:29<jm_>heh why does that use
05:29<SynrG>because the cdn gives you the best mirror (when it works)
05:30<SynrG>if it hardwired a mirror to use, it would be bad for most users
05:30<themill>jm_: because I got sick of having to explain ftp.<CC> meant "replace <CC> with your country code (should your country actually have a mirror)"
05:30<themill>(which is what dpkg used to tell people and many were getting it wrong)
05:30<jm_>themill: ahh heh - but doesn't return what SynrG mentioned above? it does seem to work that way for me

09:57<shanks>mentor: I had a look about on google but I'm not sure which scripts debian runs which preconfigure a lot of stuff. so i could end up on a bit of a wild goose chase. some guides recommend creating a nagios user etc and I'm sure debian will probably do that for me, in experience

09:58<mentor>Well, you'll be able to check if it's created a user for you

09:58<dpkg>Nagios (formerly NetSaint) is a popular open source computer system and network monitoring application software. It watches hosts and services that you specify, alerting you when things go bad and again when they get better. Packaged for Debian as nagios3. #nagios on
09:59<abrotman>shanks: probably a decent start ..
09:59<shanks>yeah. other problem is my monitoring host is CentOS so going to have to read at least a couple of guides. probably packaged under different names too. Well, thanks anyway guys
