05:00<grummund>Hi, just had a curious issue with file symlinks, can someone explain this? -
05:00<grummund>i understood that ln -sf would overwrite an old symlink, is that not correct?
05:02<Stummi>grummund, ln tooked ".mutt" as directory and created the symlink to /newpath/dot_mutt into it

05:33<Guest24599>hi, wondering if it is possible to make a vpn connection to my work network from debian squeeze (at home)

05:33<filePeter>Guest24599: Sure, what kind of vpn?
05:34-!-rougedragon11 [~rougedrag@] has left #debian [Konversation terminated!]
05:34<Guest24599>thats the prob, from windows7 I only needed to know the address to it and my domain login details. didn't know anything else about the vpn type
05:34<Eren>heh, I'm happy that I successfully configured postfix and dovecot. Postfix uses dovecot authentication backend for SMTP AUTH so that I'll also be able to use LDAP for SMTP/IMAP/POP3 auth
05:34<Stummi>Guest24245, you can make an vpn-connection between two hosts if one of them is public accessable in the internet
05:34<Eren>the problem is that I cannot sent mail to the outside of the world
05:34<Eren>because I'm a home user and I should have a reverse dns, SPF record on my domain etc :)
05:35<Guest24599>should i be reading up on openvpn for this ?

09:00<Zathras>hi. On Debian squeeze with stockkernel 2.6.32-5-amd64 with sw-raid-1 and LVM I have a troublesome volume "var". "mount" claims it is full. It keeps filling and I have no idea with what. Moreover something really weird is happening.
09:01<Zathras>I used "du" to check where all the space had gone. and according to du /var is 1.4G yet mount says 7.7G is all filled up

20:38<kop>ProjektGhost: It's strange your keyboard and mouse show up 3 times each. You might want to look at the pciid of the usb controller and see what judd says:
20:38<dpkg>The PCI ID helps us work out how to support your PCI hardware. It looks like [abcd:1234] in the output of "lspci -nn". Ask the bot "judd" to match the PCI ID of the device, e.g. "/msg judd pciid 8086:284b". Some hardware uses alternate means of detection: beware of some false positives+negatives. See also <judd-hardware>, <local pciid>. To find out what currently installed kernel modules your hardware is using, run "lspci -k".

23:10<madhartigan>I had / on the 74GB drive and /home was on the 2TB RAID0 and /var was on the 320GB RAID1.
23:10<xDATx>I have no experience with RAID unfortunately
23:10<madhartigan>Well, the Full Install Disc 1 burn is about to complete so I'll see how that goes and then I'm calling it a night.
23:10<xDATx>have you tried, just out of curiosity, reccomended partitions to see what the setup provides?
23:11-!-miksuh [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:12<madhartigan>I use that on the 74GB drive so that the partitioner sets that up with / and swap. *Then* I go into the already established RAID drives and tell the partitioner to use them as ext4 journaled partitions and to mount them at /home and /var as appropriate to the drive.
23:12<xDATx>I would put / on the 74GB and home on the 2TB Raid and make it a mirror IMHO
23:13<madhartigan>that's what I've been describing this whole time. (with the addition of /var being on the 320GB drive)
23:13<xDATx>just to keep it simple but then again I have no idea what your intentions are for your system.

23:14<madhartigan>"I had / on the 74GB drive and /home was on the . . . ."
23:15<madhartigan>That's what you're suggesting.
23:15<xDATx>Is it the 2nd RAID array that is skewing things off?
23:16<xDATx>What did your /etc/fstab look like from the Ubuntu setup?
23:16<madhartigan>I can only infer that from the error occuring on dpkg stuff that's extracting to /var
23:16<madhartigan>no clue what /etc/fstab looked like. I configured it all during install and it worked fine
23:17<madhartigan>didn't see a need to go digging any further.
23:17<xDATx>Try a net install ISO?
23:17<xDATx>I know it takes longer
23:17<xDATx>eh.. :-/
23:17<madhartigan>that's what I mentioned in my initial post.
23:17<retrospectadus>you may have luck installing without a separate /var, and set that up afterwards
23:17<madhartigan>I'm *using* a net install iso..
23:17<xDATx>ah OK
23:17<madhartigan>can I move the /var after the fact?
23:17<xDATx>my apologies
23:18-!-Savyd [] has joined #debian
23:19<madhartigan>I was thinking I would just ignore the whole RAID thing and let the partitioner auto-install on the 74GB drive and then move /var and /home once the install was completed. I think I remember reading that doing that can create some dependency issues though. I'm not sure about that.
23:20<retrospectadus>you can, just mount the working raid in /mnt and mv /var/* /mnt/foo and then mess with fstab ...
23:21<retrospectadus>I've never heard of issues regarding separate /var
23:22-!-Savyd [] has quit []
23:23<madhartigan>sounds simple in theory. If I run into issues, I'll be back. I definitely want to work through this as opposed to bailing. I just wish the install would let me do this without a workaround. I had no problem doing this when I went from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04. I just told the partitioner where to put /home and /var and it did so without issue. I'll try modding the fstab after moving
23:23<madhartigan>things and I hope that's all it really takes.
23:23<scientes>is wayland in debian?
23:25<madhartigan>do you think /var is the only issue? Do you think I can continue to tell the partitioner to put /home on the RAID0 drive?
23:25<madhartigan>or can I move /home in the same manner as /var?
23:25<retrospectadus>yes you can
23:26<madhartigan>I'll do it after the fact then.
23:26<madhartigan>thank you for the confirmations.
23:26<beata>Wasn't mounted /var handled back about 2003?
23:26<retrospectadus>the only issue you can have with that is hard links which are not very prevalent
23:27<madhartigan>sounds good.
23:27<madhartigan>what aspect of it was handled back about 2003?

23:31<madhartigan>well, writing to it on a RAID drive during install using a netinstall disc isn't working so good. Lol!
23:32<jasonsmr>hello again, anyone online here used* before the cdebootstrap for a cross-platform or cros-arch?

23:45<jasonsmr><retrospectadus> great
23:46<jasonsmr>retrospectadus great now Im just going to have to do the opposite, I was trying to access the hard drive from a remote location, in the current hardware that I wanted it in.
23:46<jasonsmr>I guess Ill juet try to install it to the hard drive from a working machine plugged in as a usb then move it>
23:47<jasonsmr>any reasons why or why not, Using a ext4 for root is good bad?? I had been using ext3

23:49<jasonsmr>wait can grub see a ext4??
23:50<xDATx>Why wouldn't it?
23:53<jasonsmr>It didnt last time I tried although now Im using wheezy
23:54<xDATx>I could swear I had previously installed using ext4 and used GRUB as the boot loader

23:54<jasonsmr>I guess I can try to install it on a ext4
23:55<xDATx>I would try it
23:55<jasonsmr>I think I should keep the boot partition outside of the LVM series as ext2 and just try it on the ext4 as root?
23:55<xDATx>I'm constantly told to use Slackware by others at work
23:56<jasonsmr>you think a ext4 boot would be allright too?

23:56<xDATx>assuming your root and boot are same
23:56<xDATx>as in
23:56<xDATx>root is bootable
23:57<jasonsmr>root = / is inside the LVM and has all the directories in it
23:57<jasonsmr>boot is not inside the lvm and is on the disk as boot and only carries the grub and boot directory stuff
23:57<jasonsmr>yes bootable

23:59<xDATx>so naturally I'm afraid of it LOL
