00:00<xDATx>I have been using Linux off and on for a while but never tought of "duh" find a CBT to learn it
00:00<xDATx>yah, I'm goofy I get that a lot.
00:00<jasonsmr>I suppose from a standpoint of the "schoolyard" and not knowing whats really going on and having another group enjoying because of it , seems to me only a bit fearful.
00:00<jasonsmr>at first it's funny
00:00<xDATx>afraid to "break things" ..
00:01<jasonsmr>yes thats also true in introspect
00:01<xDATx>but I learn from doing
00:01<xDATx>it seems the only way I learn
00:01<xDATx>I often obcess about something and repeat it over and over but from doing so I really start to understand
00:01<jasonsmr>that perhaps is the best way in humble** opinion and I have heard it recently too ^^
00:02<xDATx>I'm sorry to derail.. back to you...
00:03<xDATx>so your root "/" is set to be bootable or you have a separate boot partition?

04:21<bhuvan>this is friend of jabali
04:21<bhuvan>we tried to install nvidia onto this laptop.
04:21<valdyn>zigo: your actual problem is that you dont have a vendor who will guarantee that the card will work
04:22<valdyn>zigo: random card will just work though, normally
04:22<valdyn>zigo: ( if its not to new )
04:22<zigo>My actual problem is that my wife got an Nvidia board, and the driver is shit.
04:22<bhuvan>i guess that since the laptop has 2 graphic cards we need to select one
04:22<valdyn>zigo: which driver is shit?
04:23<zigo>Nouveau is just crap, doesn't work well, and the non-free one has a really stupid software to switch monitor.
04:23<valdyn>zigo: thats right in squeeze
04:23<valdyn>zigo: nouveau works perfectly fine for me though on my specific hardware. But nvidia-glx is fine
04:23<zigo>It's better in SID ?
04:23<m8>zigo, you can go for the restricted driver?
04:23<zigo>m8: What do you mean restricted driver?
04:24<valdyn>zigo: i tried some fp-shooters in debian, they worked perfectly fine, stock Standard X works too obviously
04:24<mjt>guess "restricted rights", like closed source
04:24<m8>like on Ubuntu, they have a driver provided by NVidia
04:24<valdyn>zigo: but you have nvidia-glx, unless you refuse to use that...

04:25<zigo>If you go with the proprietary driver, then you have to use their stupid software for switching monitor.
04:25<zigo>Like, 15 clicks to change monitor, that's really horrible...
04:25<valdyn>zigo: or a shell command
04:26<zigo>Then, I put the PC into sleep mode, later on, unplug the TV HDMI, wake up the PC, then no screen ...
04:26<zigo>FUNCTION - F<something> doesn't work.
04:26<zigo>I hate that.
04:26<zigo>valdyn: So, you're saying that Nouveau from SID is ok?

04:27-!-jabali [~jabali@] has joined #debian
04:28<zigo>bhuvan: That's one more reason why I hate the nvidia stuff. Why the fuck do they mess with the xorg.conf? If the driver is correctly written, there's no need to do that, and X can detect everything.
04:28<valdyn>zigo: they cant "write it correctly"
04:28<jabali>streuner, bhuvan
04:28<valdyn>zigo: that would violate the gpl
04:29<zigo>Why that?
04:29<bhuvan>zigo, yeah you are right but with out xorg.conf how am going to tell xserver which card to select?
04:29<zigo>You don't.
04:29<zigo>Xorg knows.
04:29<zigo>It's smart enough.
04:30<valdyn>zigo: nvidia-glx runs on an entirely different software stack than the new X+kms+mesa
04:30<zigo>When you start XDM, it just displays on all boards.
04:30<zigo>Then you load your gnome profile, and it displays on the correct board.
04:30<valdyn>zigo: i cant give you details, at some point i only read the executive summary, not the actual symbols nvidia cant use
04:30<bhuvan>zigo, well in this i case we are unable to do that same

05:38<s4br3>Hmmm... Now it works. I needed to reboot for the removal to take affect.
05:38<Bushmills>depending on the reason, modifying one of the /var/lib/dpkg/info/<package>.[pre|post]rm files may help

05:42<s4br3>Yes, I looked into /var/lib/dpkg/info before I tried to transfer (mv) that to /tmp, but it wasn't there. So, I rebooted, and redid it and somehow i guess that the reboot made the dpkg database "stable"
05:43<s4br3>the <package> i had installed wasn't there. (btw, this wasn't an U***u .deb)
05:43<Bushmills>some removal scripts fail already when they for example can't stop a service whose program they're about to deinstall. starting that service could already help in those cases

18:30<madhartigan>I have a 74GB drive, a RAID0 320GB drive and a RAID1 2TB drive. I've been running Ubuntu on this setup with / on the 74GB drive, /var on the 320GB RAID0 and /home on the RAID1. I'm now wanting to install Debian onto the 74GB drive and use the RAID0 and RAID1 as the /var and /home respectively.
18:31<madhartigan>When I use the partitioner during install I've been having debootstrap warnings during the base install.
18:31<madhartigan>and I think it has something to do with /var being written to and being a RAID drive.
18:32<madhartigan>Is there a solution that can be performed during install? or should I install to the 74GB and move the /var and /home after the install with some editing of the fstab?
