00:01<MTecknology>I imagine this won't stick through reboots
00:01<deansu>unfortunately not
00:02<MTecknology>but at least it's something :D

00:06<deansu>MTecknology: I was hessitent to suggest that, but I'm always of the 'why not' category when it comes to reboots :)
00:06<MTecknology>maybe that's not needed

00:09<Solarbaby>how long is it ok to avoid updating to debian squeeze 6.0.4?

00:09<Solarbaby>I literally just setup 6.0.3 on all my systems just a few days ago
00:09-!-No1 [] has joined #debian
00:10<MTecknology>Solarbaby: why would the upgrade be such an aweful thing then? it'll be painless and easy
00:10<deansu>6.0.4 is a compilation of all the security fixes/updates since 6.0.3, if you've been keeping your packages up to date with apt-get|aptitude update && upgrade, then you're running 6.0.4
00:10<Solarbaby>just do a apt-get update and then apt-get dist-upgrade?
00:10<Solarbaby>and supposably no pain?
00:10<deansu>just a regular upgrade
00:11<Solarbaby>oh perfect
00:11<MTecknology>Solarbaby: zero pain at all

00:13<Solarbaby>oh i haven't used redhat since 12 years back I think
00:14<Solarbaby>i remember i did an update with redhat way back then and it upgraded perl and destroyed all my website stuff and i got so pissed I didn't come back to the scene until a few years back with ubuntu
00:14<MTecknology>for as much as you pay them to give you seamless updates and such, rhel is teh _only_ distro i've ever seen break a system by doing a standard update of base packages

00:15<Solarbaby>I would be a lot better with linux today if I hadn't gotten so upset back then
00:15<MTecknology>Solarbaby: when the update broke perl on our system, it broke primarily on our payment gateway; a LOT of money was nearly lost
00:15<Solarbaby>thats worse then what happend to me
00:15<Solarbaby>I was just a hobbiest as I am now
00:16<Solarbaby>a lot of my hard work was destroyed though

02:54-!-Georg [] has joined #debian
02:54<codemonkey1337>Gerowen: Yes that's what I'm trying to do. Here is the problem, the file /etc/network/interfaces keeps getting overwitten on every restart. I need this file to stay put so I can set up a secondary interface with a "fake" ip address
02:54<codemonkey1337>so I can ssh into my guest OS from the internet

02:55<codemonkey1337>thanks but I already read that article earlier, it didn't help me with my current problem

02:56<Gerowen>codemonkey1337: Here's an article on it that says you have to remove the dhcp-client package,
02:56<Gerowen>For the settings to stick
02:57<Gerowen>may be dhcp-client3 depending on distro
02:58<codemonkey1337>Gerowen: that may work for my problem, but let me explain what a portential problem would be. I don't know how the guest OS interfaces are being set up, I'm guessing there is some type of bridge from my host OS's internet because I don't need to screw with any commands on the system
02:58-!-freex [] has joined #debian
02:58<codemonkey1337>if I take out DHCP that might affect my actual internet connection right?
02:58-!-Georg [] has quit []
02:59<Gerowen>codemonkey1337: Oh yeah, if the settings don't take, and you don't have direct access to the VM (You remoting in?) you may screw yourself.
02:59<codemonkey1337>Gerowen: okay, so I hate to sound like an idiot here, but what do you recommend I do?
02:59<Gerowen>What you could do is make a copy of /etc/network/interfaces configured as you want, store it someplace else, then in /etc/rc.local put some lines that copy your pre-written copy over top of the running copy and restarts the networking services.
03:00<Gerowen>If that's not what you did earlier with rc.local
03:00<codemonkey1337>no that isn't what I was doing, I was doing this in rc.local
03:00<codemonkey1337>auto eth1

04:20<Bushmills>!why aptitude
04:20<dpkg>aptitude has more advanced conflict/dependency resolution and will often find a solution where apt-get gives up. It can be used from the command line like apt-get plus an interactive resolver makes it much easier to recover from broken dependencies. It has advanced search capabilities (see <aptitude search>). For some upgrades, apt-get is preferred (e.g. lenny->squeeze). Read the release notes and

04:35<li_milish2>hello, i am in the partitioning setup from debian 6! i got one physical drive 500gig and i created neccessary partitions during my win7 setup which is already done! now i am rdy to finish my linux partitioning setup, but i dont have an idea where to put the bootloader in! the bootloader has to be on the partition where my linux has to be installed! can u give me a hint? heres a small overview of my setup
04:35<Bushmills>hoshi411: MBR is commonly a good place
04:36<Bushmills>that results in using a linux bootloader, which offers you to boot either linux or windows
04:36<li_milish2>i followed a tutorial, which explained that this can cause some problems
04:36<filePeter>li_milish2: No, actually the bootloader does not have to be on that particular linux partition. It should be on the MBR of the 500GiG drive.
04:37<li_milish2>Because upgrading Windows tends to overwrite the boot loader, if it is installed in the MBR, the best location for installing the bootloader is the boot partition or, if you are installing to a second hard disk, the MBR of the second hard disk. Doing that will ensure that nothing you do on Windows will affect the Linux or BSD installation.
04:37<hoshi411>Bushmills: hmm actually , i had gotten gimp 2.7.4 running on my debian machine a while back but dont know how I did it... dont remember
04:37<hoshi411>the problem is I really love debian
04:37<filePeter>li_milish2: If not, you won’t be able to boot anything except windows, because the windows bootloader won’t ask you for linux or windows… :-
04:37<li_milish2>therefore ill follow the tutorial and use another location then MBR
04:37<Bushmills>hoshi411: i can't tell you how you did that.
04:37<hoshi411>but at the same time am a graphic artist and really need the uptodate features of the bleeding edge gimp
04:37<Bushmills>and i can't remember that for you :)
04:38<li_milish2>guys, i am following this tutorial
04:38<hoshi411>Bushmills: yep , well thanks for your help so far anyways
04:38<li_milish2>and i failed yesterday with the MBR thingy
04:38<filePeter>li_milish2: How are you goona boot debian then?
04:38<li_milish2>i wasnt able to boot the win7
04:38<li_milish2>the tutorial tells me the win loader would show the debian 6 install
04:38<li_milish2>then after click debian 6 i come to the grub loader
04:39<Bushmills>li_milish2: installing grub on mbr usually takes care of allowing to boot windows too
04:39<Bushmills>no special tutorial required, commonly
04:39<li_milish2>i guarantee, i did this yesterday
04:39<Bushmills>without having read the tutorial, maybe they told you to do something wrong?
04:39<li_milish2>i had an win7 install finish, did a debian install with bootloader into MBR and booting win7 failed

04:40<filePeter>li_milish2: Have you installed os-prober? Otherwise debian won’t make grub find the windows partition, if you don’t add it manually…

19:56<ergalvao>My first one would be this: I've set up a name for the machine and then the installer asks for a domain. Since my notebook is not part of a network I can leave this field blank, correct?

20:05<ergalvao>OK. Second question: I suck at partitioning, so I've chose guided, use entire disk and separate home partition. Thing is the installer defaults everything to ext3 and I'd like everything in ext4... Any easy way to do this?
20:07<Xdept>You can view the partition layout before writing changes? I think you can just hit back and go manual? Then edit the partition....

20:10<ergalvao>k, hold on, trying to go manual at first, let's see how it goes... fingers crossed
20:10<Xdept>Yeah, Let it setup your partitions first. Then don't write changes. Go back and edit the partitions you want to the right filesystem
20:11<Xdept>Or, you could always make a note of how Debian makes your partitions and then go to Manual
