01:19<codemonkey1337>guys, I've been asking every techy IRC channel and googling for days trying to find out a remote RDP client that works under windows and would use the RDP v5 protocol...I know this is a long shot, but do you guys know a portable version that works for windows?

01:30<codemonkey1337>darn, I knew no one would know.
01:30<codemonkey1337>maybe there is no such thing
01:31<kop>codemonkey1337: You're also way-offtopic.
01:31<codemonkey1337>kop: well if it brings it back to topic, I'm trying to connect to a debian VM. But hey, it looks like no one knows so I'll withdraw my statement
01:32<kop>codemonkey1337: Why not vnc?
01:32<codemonkey1337>are we still off topic?
01:32-!-martin_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:33<codemonkey1337>I couldn't get the tightvncserver program/deamon, to actually bring up a virtual desktop.
01:33<codemonkey1337>plus, since I'm running off a live cd, the sytem actually has to be started for a VNC session to be enabled.
01:33<codemonkey1337>least that's what I thought
01:33<kop>codemonkey1337: Probably not. If someone complains we'll go to #debian-offtopic. It's always good to know the big picture, whereas clients for MS Windows is pretty much a MS Windows-only subject.
01:34<codemonkey1337>with RDP, I can control the VM as soon as it brings up the boot screen
01:34<codemonkey1337>and I can CHOOSE to go into a gnome session or stay in text mode (for ssh)
01:34<kop>codemonkey1337: You may want X11vnc. That will give you per-X-session connecivity, which means that you just need to reconnect after logout.
01:35-!-gnugr [] has quit [Quit: WeeChat 0.3.6]
01:35<codemonkey1337>kop: thanks, but I'd rather not go with another VNC client. I had a really hard time getting the RDP to work, and I'd rather not do any more port forwaring from the router, to the host, to the VM.
01:35<kop>codemonkey1337: Dunno about text mode. In the general case the right way is with a seial console.
01:36<kop>codemonkey1337: You'd have to tunnel vnc, at least if you need security over the network. And using a vpn would solve your port forwarding problems.
01:37<codemonkey1337>yea, another reason why I'd rather use tunneling, and the connection is encrypted.
01:37<codemonkey1337>at least that's what I read
01:38-!-gnugr [] has joined #debian
01:39<kop>codemonkey1337: I have openvpn tunnel _out_ from within NAT etc and then I can connect without hassle.
01:39<kop>codemonkey1337: Is the encryption any good? Historically they've sucked.
01:39<codemonkey1337>kop: dude, I'm a second year student...I really don't know much about encryption yet.
01:40<kop>codemonkey1337: There's always wikipedia. :-)
01:40<codemonkey1337>all i care about is it works, there isn't much damage a hacker could do inside a VM machine
01:40<codemonkey1337>especially since the LIVE cd is required to get it to boot properly and the / directory is located on a ramdisk

01:41<codemonkey1337>dpkg, um thanks? I didn't really ask though
01:41<dpkg>codemonkey1337: I'm not sure, is it larger than a breadbox?
01:42-!-krg85 [~krg85@] has left #debian []
01:42<kop>codemonkey1337: As in RS232 (although technically, that's not really right.)
01:42<kop>codemonkey1337: dpkg is a bot
01:42<codemonkey1337>dpkg: you're a bot aren't you
01:42<dpkg>codemonkey1337: bugger all, i dunno
01:42<dpkg>Please visit to learn how to effectively search the factoids database for FAQ, and not flood in the channel with !tell <who> about <what>. Also ask me about <msg the bot>. 01:44<codemonkey1337>just FYI, I would take a cryptology course if it was offered by my college, but I'd probably have to get a bit better in math.

01:47-!-CompWizrd [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:47<kop>codemonkey1337: To get good at it you'd have to get a lot _more_ math. But the important thing is to understand the concepts, and then rely on the experts for analysis of the algorythems, which is all everybody does anyway.
01:48<codemonkey1337>how much more math? I already finished the 3 semester calculus series
01:49<kop>codemonkey1337: Probably 2 semesters of abstract algebra. You'd have to talk to a math professor to be sure.
01:50<kop>codemonkey1337: A probability and statistics course too.
01:50<codemonkey1337>I'm not sure how high abstract algebra is on the math scale...I've never heard of it; probably because I never took at the university catalog's math section.
01:51<kop>codemonkey1337: Abstract algebra proves that 1 + 1 = 2, after about a years worth of study.

01:51<codemonkey1337>yea, I'm not good with proofs.
01:51<codemonkey1337>I had trouble with alot of the basic vector ones in calculus 3
01:51<kop>codemonkey1337: Perhaps #debian-offtopic?
01:52<codemonkey1337>um...I really didn't bring up the topic...
01:52<codemonkey1337>but I need to get some rest anyway
01:52<kop>codemonkey1337: No, but if you want to keep chatting we should go there.
01:52<codemonkey1337>maybe tormorrow

10:43<babilen>jmaslibre: sun-java6-jdk is in squeeze/non-free, but has been removed in testing/unstable due to bugs and licensing problems. I would strongly recommend to use OpenJDK instead, but you can also install Sun's if you really really have to provided that you have non-free enabled. See "/msg dpkg non-free sources" and "/msg dpkg make squeeze sources.list"

10:49<AgentC>babilen: thanks, ill try
10:50<babilen>jmaslibre: That should be changed if you plan to target JVM7 in the future as OpenJDK is the reference implementation for that version.
10:50<jmaslibre>The problem with the package in stable/non-free, IFAIK is that due to the licensing problems it is not up to date.

10:52-!-notrev is now known as notrev`out
10:53<babilen>jmaslibre: It should be noted that the version in squeeze is probably not the newest one available from Oracle/Sun, which is due to licensing changes that prohibit us to ship newer versions. If you require the newest version you'll have to download it from Oracle directly.
10:54<babilen>jmaslibre: That will, however, result in more work as you probably want to integrate it into the system and, in particular, configure the alternative's system correctly.
