01:46<evaluate>I'm having problems executing php scripts which run for longer than 20-30 seconds on debian squeeze, whereas on lenny they worked fine.
01:49<evaluate>For example: worked fine on lenny and also works fine if executed from the shell with "php script.php", but if called in a browser, I receive a "connection interrupted"/"ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE"
01:49<evaluate>I'm guessing it might be apahe doing something nasty, but since there isn't anything in the error_log, I can't figure out what the problem could be.

14:27<retrospectacus>it starts the gnome DE normally, but you have chosen xfce so it proceeds there after login. If you disabled it you would just get a TTY1 login prompt on boot
14:27<retrospectacus>login manager, not DE *

14:29<konverguoju>ok, so login manager is a separate program, as I suppose, why do I get entire gnome desktop manager initialized?
14:30<konverguoju>I bet gnome itself starts only after I login via login manager, isn't that so?

14:30-!-amarc [] has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
14:31<retrospectacus>yes the login screen is just a small program that logs you in and starts your favourite DE
14:31<konverguoju>I see this message "initializing gnome desktop manager" at boot, when I get all kinds of these messages like "stating ALSA mixer" "starting pulseaudio" and stuff
14:31<retrospectacus>that is all great :)
14:32<retrospectacus>the gnome desktop manager starts with the login screen, that's it
14:32-!-amarc [] has joined #debian
14:32<retrospectacus>if you login and choose xfce that's it for gnome, xfce starts
14:33<retrospectacus>but you still want the gnome thing to start so you get the login screen

14:33-!-Nik05 [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
14:33<retrospectacus>or none, login as your user on the TTY and start your DE manually from there
14:34<konverguoju>so is gnome itself ever started that way, or is this "gnome desktop manager" just a login manager program? :]

23:39<amitz>what's the name of that app that starts with x, where i can choose which to output, resolution, etc. on the tip of my tongue...
23:40<jardiamj>Hi guys! I created a group with addgroup and gave this group all permisions to a folder under /var/www/
23:40<dlenrek>well dpkg isn't telling me otherwise, so postfix/cyrus-imap/sieve + amavis/[clamav/spamassassin] it is
23:40<jardiamj>now I want to add my user to that group, but it doesn't seem to happen

23:41<dlenrek>adduser user group
23:41<jardiamj>I run adduser <username> <group>
23:42<jardiamj>but then when I run groups that group doesn't appear in the list
23:42<blixt># usermod -a -G www-data you
23:42<jardiamj>what does that do blixt?
23:43<dlenrek>id user ?
23:43<blixt>jardiamj adds you to the group www-data
23:43-!-contravan2 [~luis@] has joined #debian
23:43<jardiamj>and that group should have all permision to /var/www/ ?

23:45<jardiamj>I run that command and then groups and that group doesn't appear in the list either..
23:45<blixt>You need to login again.
23:45<blixt>well thats the best way to make sure its working.
23:46<blixt>that type groups
23:46<jardiamj>ok, I'll be back then..

23:48<onryo>yup, I wrote a script here that will automate all that stuff for you. Did it for the Drupal guy

23:49<onryo>and there way to easy to hack cms
23:49<onryo>As you can see I dont let o "others" do jack

23:50<peterS>onryo: ever heard of the g+s bit? I bet it would solve your same problem more automatically
23:50<onryo>find . -type d -exec chmod u=rwx,g=rx,o= {} \;
23:50<onryo>find . -type f -exec chmod u=rw,g=r,o= {} \;
23:50-!-contravan2 [~luis@] has quit [Quit: Saliendo]
23:50<onryo>and www-date is the group
23:51<onryo>or should be
23:51<peterS>onryo: basically mode 2750 instead of 750 (g=rsx instead of g=rx) on directories. it means that any newly created file inherits the directory's group automatically. and any newly created _dir_ inherits both the group and the g+s bit.
23:51<peterS>standard linux filesystem feature
23:52<onryo>peterS or you can use umask but Ill look into that
23:52<peterS>the rest of the mask (like the 'o' bits) is not inherited, though - g+s doesn't do everything
23:52<peterS>I'd say chmod g+s the directories _and_ use a umask of 027
23:53<onryo>peterS yeah that should let the permissions me inherited correctly.
23:54<peterS>onryo: btw another handy feature that is linux-specific (actually GNU specific) is on those 'find' commands - end them with + instead of \;
23:54<peterS>onryo: + is easier to type _and_ has the side effect (not needed, just sort of nice) of sending all the filenames on a single 'chmod' command line, instead of one chmod command per file

23:56<onryo>true true. This was just something I tossed together really fast. I think its nuts to let others o= anything at all. OK the group can get a read but thats it.

23:58<onryo>When I was an evil kid I thought it was fun to use sqlmap with metasploit. The result was I became very paranoid over my own servers. Almost any CMS can be trashed. Now I just use pure html on a OpenBSD server. Forget a database and JS!
