00:05<edong23___>hello debian... im on a quest to find my soulmate.. i need somone that is a bigger linux networking nerd than i am to help me resolve an issue
00:05<edong23___>or at least, understand the issue
00:05-!-mig_seixas [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:05-!-migseixas [] has quit []
00:05<Bsims>edong23___: whats the issue?
00:06<edong23___>bare with me
00:06-!-nort [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:06<edong23___>this is goign to sound wierd
00:07<edong23___>im setting up a dpi box.. and i have ingress and egress traffic mirrored on a switch port, and shooting out of a port going to my linux box
00:07<edong23___>the egress and ingress information has 2 vlans
00:07<edong23___>which i see in tcpdump
00:07<edong23___>heres here the problem is
00:07-!-david_ [~david@] has quit []
00:07<edong23___>for some reason, the numbers dont match up, and its not just a mystery that can be ignored
00:07<edong23___>the vlan interfaces, lets say they are receiving 100mbps each
00:08-!-david_ [~david@] has joined #debian
00:08<edong23___>i should see 200mbps on the core interface
00:08<edong23___>but i dont
00:08<edong23___>i see 300
00:08<Bsims>minus overhead for the switch
00:08<edong23___>maybe 325
00:08<Bsims>ouch sorry not a clue
00:08<edong23___>and the data loss isnt just some wierdnet
00:08<edong23___>is shows in my dpi inspection
00:08<edong23___>it shows the rrong data
00:09<edong23___>bu tthey are intel interfaces...
00:09<edong23___>and i get no discards
00:09<Bsims>you are prodding with deep magic, how is the data corrupted
00:09<edong23___>and i cannot for the life of me figure itout
00:09<edong23___>i dont understand your question/statement
00:09<Bsims>Is the data corrupted at all?
00:10<edong23___>not that i know of
00:10<edong23___>and i dont see why it would be
00:10<edong23___>i mean... you mean cause the switch might drop it if it is?
00:10<edong23___>cuase i get that
00:10<edong23___>i understand that...
00:11<Bsims>if not assume someone did deep magic to make it work better than you expected
00:11<Bsims>ran into that
00:11<edong23___>whats deep magic?
00:11<edong23___>now wait
00:11<edong23___>dont answer
00:11<edong23___>let me give you a key detail
00:11<Bsims>with at least one other process, seemed the more I threw at it it the better it worked
00:12<Bsims>it was optimized to work under a heavier load than I was giving it
00:12<edong23___>the switch port im mirroring has 2 vlans (as i said) but each vlan goes a different direction one to the access router, the other out to the world. so basically, i would see all the information 2 times
00:12<edong23___>and those numbers match up
00:12<edong23___>on the core interface
00:12<edong23___>so... heres the math
00:12*Bsims grins ya answered yer own question
00:13<Bsims>mine is this I got a great batch script for backup... considering writing a gui for it just for the learning
00:13<Bsims>should I bother?
00:13<edong23___>if my access router has 200mbps down and 50 up... on the interface of the server connected to the switch port reciving mirrord data i see exactly 500mbps
00:13<edong23___>its perfect match
00:14<edong23___>math but on the vlan interfaces, it doesnt add up
00:14<edong23___>something is getting lost between the physical interface and the vlan interfaces
00:14<edong23___>and i am so lost on what you are talking about.
00:14-!-panko [] has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
00:14-!-pastubbs [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:15<edong23___>and its not the overhead of vlans...
00:15<edong23___>that woudl be only about 2mbps per gigabit/sec of traffic
00:15<edong23___>this si outrageous
00:15<edong23___>like 100-150mbps off
00:15<Bsims>edong23___: I got a rsync script, I am considering making a gui for it just to teach myself how to program a gui
00:15<Bsims>debating if its worth it

02:13<Cire3>I know networking, but if I only knew deb well enough. What would cause me to not be able to set a IP address static in Deb ? I have tried /etc/network/interfaces, as well as the GUI. When I'm on the LAN I can go dhcp no problem, but static wont stick. I had it connected a few times but it doesnt last. ifconfig shows it's not bound. Any thoughts ?

12:49<jhutchins_wk>Roberek: Usually it is somewhat limited, but a very usable desktop environment.
12:50<Roberek>Hmm, the "limited" part is what I'm concerned about
12:50<jhutchins_wk>Roberek: Debian has around 30,000 software packages available, so a Live version is not going to have every possible package, but then niether is a custom install.
12:50<jhutchins_wk>Roberek: Why don't you just try it and see if you need to expand it?
12:50<retrospectacus>I installed debian on USB using debootstrap - no CDROM needed for that but it's quite a bit more complicated

18:56<BooBahShnoo>no no, i think this is a feature lol - if I select restart, it doesn't go all the way down and reload the BIOS, etc - it's like it picks up part way through the shutdown. I mean, it's great, just wondered what causes this... a util, or is this a kernel compilation option
18:57<BooBahShnoo>maybe I'm not explaining properly, but if I issue shutdown -r now on an Ubuntu box, it shuts down (doesn't power off), loads the BIOS and reboots. Doing the same on Debian does something different, not BIOS is reloaded, etc - I didn't know why it was different and what causes it to be so.

23:59<sergiuliano>anyway the limit is not on the server side
23:59<sergiuliano>as long as I have 200-300 connections to one server
23:59<XeL>in windows few times get problem with stack size on lan (IRPStackSize value) maybe there something like this on linux
23:59<sergiuliano>and about 1000 to other one, and I have no problem increasing the incomming connection number on server
