00:58<bones_was_here>sirjohndfox: you quite possibly just need a newer X server, squeeze has 1.7 which is a bit old now
00:58<bones_was_here>but i know nothing about touchscreens :)
00:59<sirjohndfox>its the evdev driver, but i've no idea where it is
00:59<sirjohndfox>i'm running avlinux so i don't want to update too much

01:00<bones_was_here>well in debian that would be the xserver-xorg-input-evdev package, and newer versions of it depend on newer X servers

01:06<bones_was_here>you would need to ask avlinux people about it, this stuff does vary between distros, and avlinux is offtopic here
01:07<bones_was_here>also, how i would suggest doing it, uses aptitude :p
01:07<sirjohndfox>its debian based.. does apt-get upgrade <package>
01:07<sirjohndfox>i have apt-get
01:09<jm_>!debian based
01:09<dpkg>Your distribution may be based on and have software in common with Debian, but it is not Debian. 01:09<sirjohndfox>ok sorry mate
01:14<sirjohndfox>i'm not clear on how the x drivers are called now that therer is no xorg.conf....

02:38<bhuvan>I have a problem with installing nvidia drivers in debian sid. the system has GeForce 8400 GS card (at least lspci says so). I tried installing the drivers using module assistant by saying m-a a-i nvidia the kernel compiles the module perfectly without any error, i can load the module but when i start x with the command /etc/init.d/gdm3 restart i get an error saying "unable to open module nvidia" and when i check the /var/log directory
02:38<bhuvan>it is filled with some 600+ Xorg.* log files
02:40<EmleyMoor>My /var filled again - due to snort going beserk... what can I do about it?

02:41<jm_>bhuvan: do you have the resulting nvidia-kernel-foo package installed?
02:41<bhuvan>When i install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau then it works perfectly

02:42<bhuvan>jm_: can you give me some pointers? is the method discribed in debian wiki pages?

02:42<lp>EmleyMoor: what do you want to do?
02:43-!-kapz [~kapz@] has joined #debian
02:43<EmleyMoor>bhuvan: It is described there - install nvidia-kernel-dkms
02:43<bhuvan>ok let me check that
02:43<EmleyMoor>lp: Stop /var filling in this way
02:43<lp>EmleyMoor: you might want to tune your snort config
02:44<jm_>bhuvan: yeah just install -dkms package instead of nvidia-kernel-source

02:44<bhuvan>jm_: oh i see
02:44<kapz>Hi! I need help choosing a debian installer...I am setting up a server for OpenERP in a VM...I need a installer that installs updated packages while it installs(via internet) it possible?
02:44<EmleyMoor>lp: Er... yes - but what exactly do I do to get it to ignore activity from all networks which are "local"?
02:44<lp>EmleyMoor: you might also want to look into using quotas, or use a dedicated partition for snort's logs, so that it doesn't ruin the whole system by filling /var
02:44<kapz>Also if I use freebsd version of debian, will .deb packages work on openerp.deb? Thanks much appreciated
02:46<bhuvan>jm_: and then sould i run m-a a-i nvidia?
02:46<EmleyMoor>lp: Indeed I might. As it is, I am trying to temporarily farm that out... but really need to get it to ignore the local network, on which there is a lot of traffic, especially on Thursdays

02:47<lp>EmleyMoor: perhps a bgf filter for snort…
02:47<jm_>EmleyMoor: is this happening on a different interface?
02:47<bhuvan>jm_: i see. It was a lot easyer few years back now lot has changed with xorg and stuff
02:47<jm_>bhuvan: it's actually easier now
02:47<lp>EmleyMoor: with that, you could filter out an entire subnet… hope it works, never used that
02:48<EmleyMoor>jm_: There isn't a different interface
02:48<bhuvan>jm_: that means i was not following this part of the development :)

09:01<lancelot_of>does anyone have any idea about this issues on my newly installed debian testing system: 1) Sometimes halt and shutdown -h now do not really shutdown the system, but reboot it. How to fix? 2)Sometimes when i open new tabs in terminals, machine hostname changes, dunno why, and i must /etc/init.d/hostname stop/start to recover it, how to fix? 3) why if go back to one previous command in terminal and go at the starting point using PageUp key
09:01<lancelot_of>, the cursor goes ahed to the prompt shrinking it?This happens with all terminals emulators
