00:54<kamiro>Hallo :D
00:55<kop>kamiro: Hello. If you've a debian question just ask.
00:56<kamiro>do you know about the linux-headers packages?
00:57<dpkg>Please do not ask if anyone can help you, knows 'something' or uses 'some_program'. Instead, ask your real question. (If the real question _was_ "does anyone use 'some_program'?" ask me about <popcon> instead.) See <ask> <ask to ask> <polls> <search> <sicco> <smart questions>.

01:06<kop>kamiro: Just ask the channel. If you don't get an answer wait a while.
01:09<kamiro>I know that i want to ask
01:09<kamiro>but my english is bad...
01:09<kamiro>i'm thinking about this
01:10<jm_>just ask and if it's unclear we will ask for clarification etc.
01:10<kamiro>well, thank you very much
01:10<kop>kamiro: Or you could tell us your native language and we might be able to direct you to a channel in that language.
01:10<kamiro>i want to install the privative drivers of nvidia
01:11<kop>kamiro: There are packages in non-free.
01:11<dpkg> . Ask me about <nouveau> (no 3D support in Debian packages), <nvidia dkms> or <nvidia m-a>. For GPUs made before 2004, see <nvidia dkms-173xx> and <nvidia dkms-96xx> for legacy drivers. Installing directly from (i.e. with <nvidia-installer>) is _not_ supported in #debian, please go to #nvidia on
01:11<jm_>kamiro: please don't use nvidia .run files
01:11<kamiro>then, i must install "linux-headers"
01:12<jm_>no, use debian packages
01:12<kamiro>oh, i see
01:12<jm_>see above - newer version for squeeze is available in backports

01:12<kamiro>i'm using wheezy
01:14<kamiro>my question is whether there are still packages "linux headers"?
01:14<kamiro>beacuse apt-get told me that it don't exists
01:15<torstein>maybe you need the hyphen?
01:15<engla>kamiro: apt-cache search linux-headers
01:16<kamiro>Well, thanks, I guess I better be installing the free drivers.

03:03<jm_>depends how broken it is
03:04-!-UNTAXIU [~owner@] has quit []
03:05<lancelot_of>jm_, the 'broken level' is that of an HD that shows input/output error so that when i try to backup with rsync a lot of files are not transferred/accessible
03:05<jm_>lancelot_of: well those files will obviously fail then
03:06<lancelot_of>jm_, so they're definetly lost?isn't there any other powerful tool to recover them?

04:52<lancelot_of>ok, some other issues. 1) At boot time a i read in console: but next sound works properly, running kernel 2.6.39. The same messages are not found loading kernel 3.2. 2)Hibernation (pm-hibernate) doesn't work, 'cause when called, it shuts down (seeming to suspend to disk as expected) but on reboot it doesn't load the image and reboots again as it would never been hibernated.

14:12<retrospectacus>copy/paste an existing desktop icon, then edit that file with a text editor and change the Exec line to burneronfire (you'll want to change other stuff too like the icon and title)

14:27<Kenneth2>Hi, I have some problems with my harddrive, the one where Debian is installed "/" - I want to change harddrive. My machine will boot up, and is working, but there are loads of harddrive errors in the logs. Is it possible to change disk, without installing debian on the new disk? - I want to "clone" the old disk, if i run "dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb" <-- Will that command clone my disk, and if, will i be able to boot from the new disk (/dev
14:28<kop>Kenneth2: Is there anything but debian on the disk?
14:30-!-alibungker [~bunker@] has joined #debian
14:30<kop>Kenneth2: The dd should work, assuming the old drive is smaller than the new and you don't get errors while copying. Otherwise ddrescue does something similar but allows for errors. But you do want to do the copy while booted off cd or something other than the hd.
14:30<Kenneth2>Its my fileserver, the disk i want to replace contains 3 partitions "/" "/home/" +swap. The reason for not wanting to install all over is that there are so many config i need to do to be able to get it up and running.

14:32<Kenneth2>kop: The new disk is smaller than the old, i want to replace a 250gb with a new ssd
14:32<kop>Kenneth2: You will also want to run a filesystem check after the copy. And you will have unpartitioned space on the new drive. (LVM is handy for this sort of stuff but if you're not using it already then it's too late.)

14:33<kop>Kenneth2: Or just cp. But you will then need to pay attention to the uuids of the filesystem, as listed in /etc/fstab, because you will have to create the partitions and the filesystems before copying. (I bet there's something in the debian reference manual about backup/restore.)
14:34<kop>Kenneth2: So, just change the uuids in fstab.
14:34<kop>Kenneth2: You will also need to re-install grub in order to boot.
14:34<Kenneth2>what about partition table?
14:35<kop>Kenneth2: Partition the new disk as you like and make the filesystems before copying.
14:35-!-ring0 [] has joined #debian
14:36<kop>Kenneth2: Come to think of it most people will use rsync for this (with -x) instead of cp.
14:37<kop>Kenneth2: You copy a partition at a time. (You have to mount the new partition somwhere.)
14:37<kop>Kenneth2: The installcd has a rescue mode that is useful for all this.
14:38<Kenneth2>So, the plan is: 1. Partition disk and make filesystem. 2. copy files using dd og tar. 3. Fix fstab on new disk. 4. run grub-install <-- how can i do that if the system does not boot up? Can i run grub-install when bootet up from my old disk, or livecd?

14:39<kop>Kenneth2: You can't use dd, you have to mount the new fs, use "tar -C oldmountpoint -cO . | tar -C newmountpoing -xpf -"
14:39<kop>Kenneth2: rsync works pretty much like cp, only has lots more options. You could just read the man page.

21:35<petr>I know that it is better, but i want to know if is it possible to create alias like such function
21:35<petr>jello: double-quotes - not working for me
21:35<rudi_s>AFAIK some shells support it, but some don't (like zsh).
21:36<rudi_s>No idea why you want to use an alias for that.
21:36-!-m0rtis0000 [] has left #debian [Leaving]
21:36<rudi_s>Double quotes won't work, then $1 is interpreted while you define the alias.

The server is arch i686, but dpkg won't compile to that, so we need it to compile to i386 (correct?) how would I do that
