02:51<flixh>I'm searching for a simple solution to do configuration management for a few debian testing machines; e.g. add common network mounts to /etc/fstab, setup crontab entries for automatic backups, create a few users and install some ssh-keys. Anybody got a good recommendation for something simple?

03:11<EmleyMoor>I have an ntfs filesystem I want an ordinary user to be able to mount and umount. It can be done easily as root, and mounted, but not umounted, as an ordinary user. I am also not sure how its presence would be dealt with by, say, tar with the --one-file-system option. Can anyone offer me any guidance on this?

Knoppix is a live CD distribution which is <based on Debian>, useful as a rescue CD, to test hardware, and for situations where you have access to a computer but it isn't Debian. unofficial: <Debian-live> is the Debian equivalent for publishing live systems.

09:11<emmanuel>ayaka: sudo and root are different isn't they ?
09:12<babilen>emmanuel: Ah, ok. Debian typically setups two accounts during the initial installation. That is one root account and another for a user. Both are optional as long as you setup at least one user. So you either end up with a full root account and another (unprivileged) user account, or one user account that can acquire superuser privileges via sudo.

09:13<ayaka>emmanuel no, who know
09:14<ayaka>ubuntu said no, debian has two opinons
09:14-!-yossiharel [] has joined #debian
09:15<Iridos>the factoids really said it... root is a user account with special powers, sudo is a program that allows you to use all/some of those powers without switching to another account
09:15<babilen>emmanuel: No -- It is a bit more complicated than this. The root user can (per definition) do everything on the system and every user that knows the root password can become root. sudo allows a more fine-grained approach for giving specific users superuser privileges for all or a subset of commands (/msg dpkg sudoers) and also doesn't make it necessary for other users to know the root password.

11:55<sml>just a quickie. what's the advantage of installing wordpress the debian package as oppossed to just getting the php and untarring it under /var/www? I don't see, or understand, why they're packaged up in Debian since these things change often and all have their own auto-update built in.

12:00<babilen>sml: Why do you use a distribution at all? I mean you could manually install and update *all* software -- I am by no means a WP user, but would argue that the packages are most likely well integrated into the whole Debian system (think init scripts, default configuration for various http daemons, documentation in pre-defined places, well tested, security support by Debian's security team in addition to upstream, ...)

12:03<sml>babilen: but with these drop in isolated php directories you're not installing stuff scattershot over the debian system. and it's , in some way, isolated or sandboxed from the rest of the system. if it has it's own in-built update system for security updates too, then i don't see the problem. the reason i ask is that i did this for wordpress. now one of my users wants joomla and im trying to decide whether i should install the joomla debian package or just go

12:04<babilen>sml: I can't comment on those packages, but I would always use the Debian package unless I have a very good reason not to. You might want to discuss this with WP and Joomla upstreams as well or bring it up on suitable Debian mailing lists (such as debian-user or more specific ones)
12:04<sml>babilen: noted. thanks.

12:06<babilen>sml: The less work it is to keep your system updated and in a functional state the more likely it is to be actually up-to-date and running. You can surely install software from various sources and rely on their upgrade mechanism, but that incurs more work for the system administrator. That coupled with the fact that updated packages that are uploaded as security updates in Debian are typically well-testing and patches are most likely audited by ...
12:06<babilen>... the package maintainer (in addition to upstream) as well, I don't really see a reason not to use the pacakges.

21:13<peterS>detly: this is not about LANG but about how variable interpolation happens. so, 'FOO=xyz echo $FOO'. You might expect to see 'xyz', but in fact the $FOO is expanded before the statement as a whole is executed. so it is expanded to 'FOO=xyz echo ' and then executed.
21:14<peterS>detly: try this: LANG=C eval 'echo $LANG'
21:14<peterS>the '' prevent $LANG from being expanded before the statement is executed

22:39<kop>StarmanDX: You may as well have a single partition, and a /boot partition just to be flexible.
22:40<kop>StarmanDX: The only thing separate partitions gets you is being able to fill one or another and not hose the whole system. /boot is nice to have separate so that you can use various bootloaders and don't have to worry about raid or lvm or anything.

22:41<kop>StarmanDX: lvm is nice to allow for future flexibility in partition sizes. But you don't really need to worry about that if you've 1 partition (+ say 200M for /boot). And it's another level of complication a beginner does not need.
22:41<StarmanDX>Okay. Thank you, kop and zykotick9.
22:42<kop>StarmanDX: Some like to have /home on it's own partition to be able to 'share' it between various distros, but that too can be tricky with versions of desktop config files for various programs messing with each other.
22:43<kop>StarmanDX: The only other recommendation is have a way to make backups. It's a good exercise in doing something with your shiny new system. ;-)
22:43<kop>StarmanDX: And if you're new, see the <introduction> and <overview> factoids. Type "/msg dpkg overview" into your irc.
22:46<StarmanDX>This helps a lot. Thank you again, kop!

23:46<bones_was_here>but usb modems often only work in windows, so if your netgear has a usb modem feature it probably won't work
23:47<dondelelcaro>Guest3604: if you mean the USB adapter, it should be. You may need firmware though.
23:47<Guest3604>bones_was_here, no I am meaning a netgear n150 USB adapter wireless usb. Not a router. I want to know if the Debian stable will nativaley have the driver.
23:47<Guest3604>dondelelcaro, is there anyway to check ? If I will need the firmware and that before I install.
23:48<Guest3604>Im currently on Ubuntu and unity is aggrevating. Going back to the good gnome.
23:48<bones_was_here>i assumed you meant this
23:48<bones_was_here>as far as wifi adapters go, you need to know what chip is in the adapter, and see what linux driver supports that chip
23:49<Guest3604>bones_was_here, according to the post its something a9thk driver
23:49<Guest3604>Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0846:4260 NetGear, Inc. WG111(v3) 54 Mbps Wireless [RealTek RTL8187B]
23:49<bones_was_here>netgear have, in the past, used multiple different chips (requiring different drivers) for the same model
23:49<Guest3604>bones_was_here, I posted the chipset part
23:50<bones_was_here>ok that definately won't be ath9k, which is for modern atheros chipsets, whereas you have a realtek on there
