01:01<cirzgamanti>hi, i've got two 1.5T hard drives (ext4), both with the same 1.2T of data (using grsync). i did 'tune2fs -m 0' on both. but one has 216G left, the other only 195G. how can that be?
01:02<cirzgamanti>i had some corruption on the "smaller", which got fixed with fsck, and tested it with seagate-tools (on windows), passed ok.
01:02<cirzgamanti>and i emptied lost+found.

03:13<Deltatash>hi, :) I have just finished setting up my Debian 6.0 just how I like it. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good method to make a backup image of my drive incase I ever need to reinstall I can instantly get back to my "perfect" (for me) set up? I have seen a cloning tool in ntfsprogs but that wont work in ext3?
03:13<Deltatash>Also I like the way ntfsprogs apparently only backs up the used data, not empty, so a 250gb partition back up will not be 250g would be more like 50gb... anyone have any reccomendations?

06:57<patrunjel>Hi. I have some files with names in the format : Whatever_name.flac, and I want to change then into The_same_name.mp3 . I tried piping ls to mv, a for statement, and piping ls to a variable and then renaming the files after the variable. Everything failed :D . Could you please help me out?
06:57<babilen>patrunjel: Take a look at "man rename"
06:57<patrunjel>thanks :D
06:58<babilen>patrunjel: Note that you can't convert from flac to mp3 merely by renaming the files though -- You would need to convert them explicitly with, for example, sox

07:00<patrunjel>:-?? probably it's some metadata difference, not the data itself, so the files are playable
07:00-!-trifolio6 [] has joined #debian
07:01<patrunjel>yep, you're right, they don't work :D they played on the pc, but on the mp3 they acted just like before...
07:01<babilen>Yeah, it is still flac encoded data that can be played. You could even rename it to the_name.txt and play it with a flac player, but there really isn't a reason to do so

07:03<babilen>patrunjel: Yeah, you *have* to convert the data to mp3 -- The player presumably only filtered them before, but is still not able to play the flac encoded data. How do you interface with the player? I found that an easy solution is to create a .is_audio_player on the player that defines the acceptable formats and let media players such as rhythmbox do the conversion when you copy them.
07:03<babilen>patrunjel: See for a discussion of that approach.
07:03<SynrG>patrunjel: ffmpeg -i file.flac file.mp3

07:03<babilen>patrunjel: I guess that other media players such as amarok, banshee, ... (inter alia) behave similar

You can follow "/msg dpkg fixmbr" to reinstall grub into the mbr

13:33<Peaker>daemonkeeper, what's the difference between backports and using the newer distro?
13:33<dpkg>A backport is a package from a newer Debian branch, compiled from source for an older branch to avoid dependency and <ABI> complications. (2.7.4 and 2.7.10), . Ask me about <debian-backports> and <backport caveat>. See also <simple sid backport>.

13:33<daemonkeeper>Short answer: It is a much better alternative if you want to upgrade a single package only.
