02:11<sharpK>anyone have audio over HDMI working out of an nVidia card on squeeze?
02:11-!-ballison [~ballison@] has joined #debian
02:13<jpinx>sharpK: don't double-post
02:15<jm_>sharpK: perhaps the issue is HDMI one is not card0 so it's not picked by default - try changing your default device and see if it helps
02:15<jm_>a quick test with speaker-test will clarify this
02:16<sharpK>jm_ how would I do that?
02:16<sharpK>change the device that is....
02:16<jm_>sharpK: it's in alsa FAQ but most apps have a setting to change it
02:17-!-lorth [] has joined #debian
02:20<jm_>sharpK: aplay -L, it will probably show several default:CARD=foo lines, so test them all with speaker-test -D 'default:CARD=...' but be aware this produces pink noise by default
02:20-!-melmothX [] has joined #debian
02:20-!-andres is now known as zz_andres
02:23-!-zz_andres is now known as andres
02:24-!-mike [] has joined #debian
02:25-!-mike is now known as Guest5602
02:25<sharpK>jm_ hmmm, now aplay -l returns no soundcards found, probably because I was trying to build it from source
02:25<sharpK>should I reinstall alsa?
02:26<jm_>sharpK: so you have no output if you do: cat /proc/asound/cards
02:26-!-ompaul [~ompaul@] has joined #debian
02:27<sharpK>hm_ no such file or directory
02:27<jm_>do you have any sound modules loaded at all?
02:28<sharpK>how do I check?
02:29<sharpK>I think following this guide is why it's not showing the regular sounds ouputs in aplay -l (the ones on the mobo, cause the HDMI doesn't show up there)
02:29<sharpK>someone on a forum said that did it for them and they were in the same situation...
02:30<jm_>lsmod|grep snd
02:30-!-macfreak [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:30-!-xiewanchen [~xiewanche@] has joined #debian
02:30<xiewanchen>hello ,everyone!
02:30<jm_>not sure if you need to reload nvidia driver if you rmmod/modprobe other snd drivers
02:31-!-tazz [~gaurav@] has joined #debian
02:31<sharpK>jm this is what I get:
02:32<xiewanchen>Are you talking about technology ?
02:33<jm_>sharpK: perhaps verify permissions on files in /dev/snd then, this looks fine to me so I don't see why you wouldn't jave /proc/asound/card file
02:33<jm_>/proc/asound/cards even
02:33<sharpK>how do I check permissions on /dev/snd?
02:34<jm_>uhh with ls -l, like with other files (permissions and ownership are what matters if accessing as non-root)
02:34<sharpK>oh whoops, I typed in card earlierrather than cards
02:34-!-mlundblad [~marcus@] has joined #debian
02:34-!-MarGarina [] has joined #debian
02:34<sharpK>and that's what I get
02:34<sharpK>well, at least that one see's an nvidia something
02:35<sharpK>which could be a good sign, I suppose?
02:35-!-artista_frustrado [~fernando@] has joined #debian
02:36<jm_>yeah so aplay -L should show them both too
02:36-!-kaziem [] has joined #debian
02:37<sharpK>it returnes: null | discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
02:38<sharpK>and aplay -l returns: aplay: device_list:235 no soundcards found....
02:39<olspookishmagus>praise pulseaudio?
02:40-!-mode/#debian [+l 480] by debhelper
02:40<jm_>did you run it as root?
02:40<sharpK>sudo aplay -l returns the same...
02:41<jm_>ok so it's not permissions then, then check if you have ~/.asoundrc or remove all snd modules and reload them, not sure why it would do this
02:42-!-floe__ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:42<sharpK>how do I do those things? (check for ~/.asoundrc and reload modules)
02:43<jm_>ls -l ~/.asoundrc - module commands are rmmod / modprobe
02:44<sharpK>for the first one: ls: cannot access /home/usr/.asoundrc: no such file or directory...
02:44<sharpK>and which modules should I reload?
02:45<sharpK>couldn't I just restart to reload the modules?
02:45<jm_>the ones returned by: lsmod | grep snd (note that for some it will say they are in use so repeat until done, probably best to script it)
02:47<sharpK>jm_ would a restart reload them?

02:52<sharpK>showing two intels... as it used to..
02:53<jm_>sharpK: and /proc/asound/cards
02:54<sharpK>so it shows an nvidida but not hdmi
02:56<jm_>sharpK: do you have nvidia binary only driver loaded?

17:05<bitlord>kop, OK, so the question is simple, but I didn't found the answer yet, Is it possible to install debian using graphical or console(text) installer on already "configured" LUKS(LVM()) setup without formatting all partitions?
17:05<kop>bitlord: If the instal guide does not have a chapter you can always run the installer in expert mode. You should be able to skip the partitioning. If necessary use the <vt> to mount and supply the luks password manually, and just move on with the rest of the install.

17:07<kop>bitlord: I think expert mode also gives you the rescue option, which should mount for you. Then you can use the menu to start the install at the point after the mount. You may need to play with it a bit. Also, the debian wiki might or might not help.
17:08<maxou56800>Hi all :)
17:08<bitlord>ok, didn't tried rescue mode, tried unlocking it in console, and activating LVM volumes, installer finished no problems, but didn't boot, it failed (It was few months back!)
17:08<retrospectacus>hi maxou56800
17:09<kop>bitlord: Then you've problems just with the grub install. (You do need an unencrypted /boot partition to boot you know.)
17:10<bitlord>kop, I know, grub was fine, but I think initrd, or some configuration for LVM or LUKS was failed :(
17:11<kop>bitlord: Then you just need rescue mode and do an "update-initramfs -u" to fix the initrd.
