01:02<meglaw>help pls? i broke my fstab somehow and now it wont boot
01:02<bones_was_here>please post your fstab
01:03<nevyn>to or similar not in the channel
01:04<meglaw>yeah, thats kind of hard when box wont boot...
01:05<meglaw>i can go into single user mode
01:05<meglaw>but, then its only read
01:05<meglaw>cant get remout to work
01:06<bones_was_here>well if you use your read only single user access to post your fstab, someone might be able to tell you what's wrong with it ;)
01:06<meglaw>if net is up at that point
01:07<bones_was_here>you could just do it by hand, fstab is generally not very big :p

01:14<bones_was_here>normally after that you would put the mount point or device, but that depends on fstab, and may not work depending how broken it is :p
01:15<bones_was_here>so you might have to be all, mount -o rw,remount /dev/mapper/yourrootvol / (assuming you dont have /etc on a separate volume...)

01:20<bones_was_here>no, fstab isn't a filesystem or mount point

01:30<bones_was_here>most of your lines omit the <options> field, including the root
01:31<bones_was_here>by default the options string for root is errors=remount-ro
01:31<bones_was_here>but just putting "defaults" as your options string for each filesystem (like you have for sdc1) will work
01:33<meglaw>what, like on hardware adress / ext 0 0 i should out " hardware adress / defaults ext3 0 0
01:33<meglaw>seems resanable

01:48<jbrelin>I use the debian-multimedia repositories in addition to official. But the version of VLC in debian-multimedia has a bug and I want to use the higher versioned release in the regular Debian repository. How do I install that version this one time?
01:48<jbrelin>'apt-cache show vlc' shows me both versions, but the lower rev one in the marillat repository is the one installed.
01:50<bones_was_here>i forget, but in aptitude curses interface you can press + above the version u want
01:50<bones_was_here>then g twice to install it
01:50<jbrelin>Aptitude is a nightmare, but I'll see if it makes a mess.
01:50<jbrelin>(It always removes a bunch of crap... it doesn't like unstable.)
01:50<bones_was_here>works fine here
01:51-!-Slice [] has joined #debian
01:51<jbrelin>Sometimes after an update, there will be a hundred packages marked for removal that are perfectly good and necessary packages. I wait a few days and they are unmarked for removal.
01:51<bones_was_here>probably your packages aren't marked properly
01:52<bones_was_here>something you expect not to be marked auto, is marked auto
01:52<jbrelin>aptitude is only showing one version.
01:53<EmleyMoor>What do I do to get the nvidia module done for the new kernel? I have nvidia-kernel-dkms installed
01:53-!-Slice [] has quit []
01:54<bones_was_here>which version?
01:55<jbrelin>I found a way to show both versions, bones_was_here , but then aptitude wanted to remove a hundred packages that I do not want removed... so I backed out.
01:56<jbrelin>This is something that happens intermittently... I assumed it was just Life With Unstable because in a few days, apt will be perfectly happy with those same packages.
01:56<EmleyMoor>(ah, I take it that question wasn't to me)
01:56<bones_was_here>unfortunately i'm at work and don't have time to determine why you're seeing that atm...
01:56<bones_was_here>it isn't normal though
01:57<jbrelin>Well, that's a hassle I'd surely like fixed.
01:57<jbrelin>But another day!
01:57<bones_was_here>when aptitude has a problem, generally it means there is a problem, rather than 'aptitude is weird' :P
01:57<jbrelin>Well, I figured it was an issue with how the Packages files are sometimes just a little whack in Unstable.
01:58<bones_was_here>also the channel for that would be #debian-next, #debian is supposed to be just for stable
01:58<jbrelin>I didn't think it was an aptitude problem... just that aptitude wouldn't let me ignore this occasional quirk.

07:46<hbomb>ssh, absolutely. it's the connection you're using to run the ls command. you need to run it over something, and your options are really only ssh or telnet, and telnet isn't really an option that should ever be considered

13:51<valdyn>srtu: how can it seem like perl has problems with localisation when theres no further output?
13:52<gdb>valdyn: I think he's referring to this:

13:53<valdyn>srtu: resture from backup
13:53<valdyn>srtu: restore from backup
13:53<srtu>the funny thing is, got no bckup its a fresh install

13:54<gdb>ah okay
13:54<srtu>so no chance to repair
13:54<valdyn>gdb: but he can unpack manually
13:55<srtu>so <dpkg reconfiguire perl> maybe?
13:55<srtu>it doesn´t matter if i destroy the whole system ;-)
13:55<valdyn>srtu: yea, but that will likely fail due to perl being broken, try and see
13:56<srtu>one klick and its up again
13:56<srtu>ok i try
13:56<gdb>Unpacking manually means getting the debconf package and unpacking the .deb with BSD ar, then untarring it over your filesystem as root (as dpkg would do when installing it).
