23:52<dn3s>and i have separate / and /home partitions
23:53<dn3s>link doesn't exist? that's strange since it shows up when i type ls
23:53<retrospectacus>only soft links will work across partitions
23:53<johnv474>can you give an actual example of one of the commands you entered to create the link? Change the names if you like.
23:53<dn3s>it's not overly personal
23:53<dn3s>actually giving the context would probably be helpful
23:53<retrospectacus>dn3s: ls -l link should say something then... like lrwxrwxrwx etc
23:53<johnv474>I'm wondering if you are using relative or absolute pathnames for the link.
23:54<dn3s>and perhaps there is a less convoluted way of going about this than with symlinks
23:54<dn3s>here goes. so with /etc/tranmission-daemon as my working directory,
23:55-!-lostson [] has joined #debian
23:55<dn3s>as root, i type 'ln -s download /home/USERNAME/torrent'
23:55<dn3s>i also tried this with
23:56<dn3s>ln -s /etc/transmission-daemon/download /home/USERNAME/torrent
23:56<dn3s>is there some sort of mechanism to prevent symlink loops or something that i'm accidentally tripping?
23:57<johnv474>and what you are trying to do is be able to type 'download' at the prompt and have it take you to that directory? or are you hoping to type 'cd download' and have it go to the torrent directory?
23:57<dn3s>well to be able to type cd torrent and take me to the /etc/.../download directory
23:58<retrospectacus>rm torrent && ln -s /etc/transmission-daemon/download torrent
