00:00<dn3s>i am extremely embarassed
00:00<dn3s>i have been working over an ssh session,
00:00<dn3s>and somehow quit ssh without noticing. and have been dicking around in my local system, making symlinks to files that obviously won't be there
00:01<dn3s>thank you though for all the help!
00:01<retrospectacus>!pal dn3s
00:01*dpkg points at dn3s and laughs uproariously
00:01<retrospectacus>np :p
00:02<johnv474>No shame in being human :-) Have fun
00:02<heikkila>dn3s, if you use bash you might like the package bash-completion, it will help you see if a folder exists by typing it's first characters and simply hitting the tab key 1-2 times
00:02<dn3s>no problem
00:02<dn3s>it actually came by default. i agree; it's super convenient.
00:03<dn3s>while i'm here, i have a question about permissions. no ssh mess this time i promise
00:03-!-clopez [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:04<heikkila>I'm not sure you have it both on the server and your client, but that would have been a clue :)
00:05<johnv474>go ahead
00:05<heikkila>must be a long question..
00:05<dn3s>oh, i see. my client is actually fedora (gasp) and autocompletion is not as good as on the debian server.
00:05<johnv474>or he doesn't have permission to ask haha
00:05<dn3s>no i got distracted sorry.
00:07<dn3s>i know you guys aren't transmission devs, but i think this is pretty general. my whole symlink kludge is because when i configure transmission to download files into anywhere in my home directory where i'd like it to go, it gets a bunch of permission errors and fails to download.
00:08-!-GeorgeSebastian [~georgeseb@] has joined #debian
00:08<dn3s>is there a way to set permissions in a single directory in my home folder so that processes running under different users can acces?
00:08<dn3s>the daemon is launched by some init script, so i assume it's running as root. maybe that's incorrect
00:09<johnv474>hmm. do you mean to give permission to, say, a group of people so they can each access that particular download directory
00:09-!-clopez [] has joined #debian
00:10<johnv474>do you have access to the directory now?
00:10<dn3s>yes. i need to give the user 'tranmission' read/write access.
00:11<cthuluh>so, something like: mkdir ~/downloads; chmod 2775 ~/downloads; chgrp transmission ~/downloads
00:11<dn3s>will i still have access?
00:11<cthuluh>then you add yourself to the transmission group
00:11<cthuluh>and ensure that transmission-daemon uses an umask like 002
00:12<dn3s>this is all stuff that till a few days ago when i took on this server project i did mostly via GUI so ill try to keep up
00:12<cthuluh>hmmm. if this is on a headless server, you might prefer rtorrent
00:12<dn3s>does it have a web interface?
00:13<cthuluh>but ok, I don't know transmission-daemon well, maybe doesn't it require a gui
00:13<cthuluh>hmm, yes, iirc. rutorrent or something
00:13<heikkila>there are a few web interfaces for rtorrent
00:14<dn3s>i don't particularly like transmission, i just liked the built-in web interface. it is a pain to config though. is rtorrent more modern than transmission?

00:21<dn3s>oh and the other thing is I seem to have messed up my hostname attempting to change it. now it seems some parts of the system thinks it's newdebian and some think it's something else.

00:22-!-nardev [~nardev@] has joined #debian
00:23<cthuluh>dn3s & johnv474 : actually the manpage probably isn't the best place to find the relevant bits
00:24<cthuluh>2 is setgid, which on directories means "for all the files created in this directory, give them this directory's group ownership"
00:24<johnv474>dn3s, what I remember (which is from William E Shotts' site, for learning the command line), is that the permissions can be set using octal numbers, where 7=rwx (read write execute), 6=rw- (read write), 2=-w- (write), 5=r-x (read execute), and there are more
00:25<cthuluh>johnv474: this is true but doesn't apply to the fourth number in "2755"
00:26<dn3s>oh my. wait so i could put 7 or i could put -rwx?
00:26<johnv474>each file/directory has three settings: read, write, execute. when you type 'ls -l' the first part may say rwxrwxr-- or something. the first three letters are permissions for the file's owner, the 2nd three are the permissions for the file's group members, and the third three are for everyone else.

00:27<johnv474>thank you cthuluh. I would have understood '700', but '2755' has an extra digit for me.
00:28<johnv474>dn3s, yes you can set permissions either with an octal representation (which uses certain numbers for certain meanings) or symbolically, i.e. combinations of r, w, and x for the permissions you want.

00:41<cthuluh>actually I may be off by +/-10 :)
00:41<cthuluh>dn3s: try the hostname command
00:42<dn3s>aren't there like a ton of places that refer to it that i would need to update as well?
00:42<cthuluh>then change the relevant bits in /etc/host{s,name}

00:43<dn3s>i actually tried that before, but one thing i noticed was that sudo would always spit out 'sudo: unable to resolve host newdebian'
00:43<dn3s>so i guess sudo has a configuration file somewhere?
00:44-!-hazard2 [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:44<cthuluh>yes, but I didn't know this kind of error would be triggered using a default sudo config
00:46<dn3s>hmm. i ended up just reverting all the changes i did to files, and while 'newdebian' isn't the most professional-looking hostname, it'll do for my personal server
00:46<dn3s>i'll probably end up reinstalling debian within a year anyways
00:48<dn3s>well i guess that's pretty much all my problems
00:48<cthuluh>lucky you

00:51<cthuluh>hmmm. well, that's not much complicated
00:51<cthuluh>but anyway, if you're happy with that :)
00:51<dn3s>i dislike the 'mail' command.
00:52<dn3s>oh. like before i was. which was annoying
00:53<dn3s>sudo couldn't resolve my hostname, which was considered a security issue, so i got an email to my account every time
00:55<cthuluh>well, cool, just make it resolvable editing /etc/hosts
00:55<dn3s>yeah. that's what i did :D

07:58<Ub3rS0ldat>I have a problem with grub not have my Windows 7 install in the menu. I did grub-mkconfig to generate a menu.lst file. In the menu.lst file it has Windows 7 in it however it doesn't show in the menu when I boot the machine. Is there something else I need to do?
07:59<jm_>you most likely have grub-pc installed which doesn't use menu.lst but grub.cfg - install os-prober and it should add windows to menu automatically
08:00<Ub3rS0ldat>os-prober is already installed. I just ran os-prober and it displayed "/dev/sda2:Windows 7 (loader):Windows:Chain"

10:54<syn^>Infiltrator, ok. then you must set a pass in smbpasswd in order for it all to work.
10:54<syn^>Infiltrator, also, the option; unix password sync =

10:55<syn^>but you still always need a smbpasswd

20:31<scientes>dondelelcaro, how do i do that?
20:31<dondelelcaro>scientes: tcpdump -i interface -n -l -vv; and watch. should be obvious
20:31<dondelelcaro>scientes: you can also just figure it out if you look at your ip and subnet mask; the gateway is almost always the first or last ip.

22:01<sirEgghead>for the most part it's ok, but if i take a screenshot, i always have a vsync line across the middle
22:02<robbiethe1st>Speaking of wine... I'd look into Crossover(i.e. paid version of wine). You can get a free copy if you agree to 'advocate' for them - i.e. be a beta-tester and provide a report for one application each beta-cycle

22:02<robbiethe1st>You can get a few-day free trial in any case
