02:38 | <ptr> | squeeze and squeeze-updates both seem to work; it's just squeeze-proposed-updates that doesn't |

13:49 | <SynrG> | berto: in general, if a package upgrade requires a daemon to restart, it should restart it in its maintainer scripts, so that's not something a user needs to worry about |
13:49 | <SynrG> | if for your own reasons you want to restart a daemon to ensure a new version of a library is used, that's up to you |
13:49 | <ayaka> | I know rules in debian/ support forcing restart |
13:49 | <berto> | SynrG: it's in a library that I'm maintaining that so far is only being used by a daemon |
13:49 | <berto> | I can do it manually in the postinst script, it's quite simple |
13:50 | <SynrG> | ah. if this is a packaging question it really belongs on #debian-mentors, not here |
13:50 | <berto> | I was wondering if there was a standard way to do it |

14:02 | <SynrG> | (especially if you're going to do this more than once) |

17:26 | <retrospectacus> | weox: it's cause gnome includes transmission. You can remove gnome, and install other torrent programs, also install other gnome programs you want |
17:26 | <retrospectacus> | !unmarkauto |
17:26 | <dpkg> | Is apt trying to remove packages that it thinks were automatically installed? This happens when you "aptitude install gnome" and then later remove bits of it causing the gnome meta-package to be uninstalled and then all its dependencies. Fix this by running "aptitude unmarkauto packagename" on strategically chosen packages, or reinstall the <metapackage> (apt-get also has unmarkauto from squeeze onwards). |

17:51 | <devil> | weox: does apt-get purge openoffice.org* do the same thing |
17:52 | <chealer> | weox: that office issue is also due to the gnome metapackage. If you remove the metapackage, the issue will disappear. Keeping the gnome package has certain advantages, but I'd recommend you remove it in your case. |

17:53 | <zlatan> | weox, remove gnome metapackage, and gnome-office package if installed |

Rebooting fixed the immediate issues, but this is the second hang in two days. Seems to be only this guest that is having issues. Unclear if the two hangs are the same issue, it was low on memory yesterday so I tweaked the apache prefork settings to free some RAM, and today it hung without memory issues p |
