03:06<fcrs>Jimi33: have you checked that it can reach the internet?
03:07<gdb>Jimi33: Every package in contrib depends on packages in non-free. That's what contrib is for. contrib contains software that is DSFG free, but that depends on non-free software to work. Anyway, it's nothing to worry about yet.
03:08<Jimi33>so it works
03:08<Jimi33>are there other repositories I sohould try?
03:08<Jimi33>cool ones?
03:09<gdb>That's probably outside the scope of this channel. Regardless, it's going to be difficult to find software for etch as that release has been unsupported for over 2 years.
03:10<gdb>It was released on April 8, 2007, and EOL on February 15, 2010.
03:11<gdb>While I understand that people have different needs, is there some reason you require etch instead of squeeze?

03:13<gdb>Well, you certainly have an excuse then. Most folks that come in here running something that old can only say "it's the CD I had." Meaning: No reason at all. ;-)
03:13<fcrs>if it's 'Wii Linux' from wiibrew, it uses a custom kernel so maybe squeeze userland will not work

16:24<scientes>quasisane, umm, just use wireshark which sets your ethernet device into promiscuous mode
16:25<scientes>then forging mac addresses is a pain, so you basically have to replace the switch with a hub AFAIK if you are not the bottleneck

16:25<quentusrex_>scientes, I'm running this on a headless debian box, so testing with tshark. I already have the switch configured to mirror the traffic
16:25<scientes>i've read that wireshark can work over ssh, but it didn't seem easy
16:26<quentusrex_>the problem is that I can't locate documentation on how to configure the network interface if no outbound traffic is allowed on that switch port
16:26<scientes>and it didn't seem liek i could just install the capture binary, and not the whole thing

20:56<chealer>to be clear, vbindiff did what I needed, so unless someone has a good tool to do that in the future, my problem is solved for now
20:57<scientes>chealer, by default the first and second of the data are the same for the same line, so it really isn't a problem, as diff works by lines
20:58<youlysses>According to my system I have alsa-utils installed, yet I can't use alsaconf?

20:59<Samkov>hey all, can anyone suggest to me an app that can monitor and give me temps on my hardware, something similar to aida64 (everest)?

21:00<chealer>!tell youlysses about alsaconf
21:01<scientes>chealer, im saying that while it outputs two copies of the data, those two copies are on the same line, so as diff compares by line, diff wont show any excess info
21:02<youlysses>chealer, thanks! The wiki needs updated then ...
21:02<chealer>scientes: unless you have another definition of "excess info" than I do, I guess it would in my case, since all lines would be different.

21:13<scientes>chealer, well if you export a diff then that diff might be ugly and verbose, but if you do a git pull, git is very efficient
21:14<scientes>even though the effect is the same
21:14<chealer>scientes: I am not trying to export differences. I just want to visualize differences.
21:14<scientes>also, just FYI to lossly export from git you have to use git format-patch, and then apply with git am
21:15<scientes>well, then i think hd + diff would be just fine
21:15<scientes>cause it wont show stuff which stayed the same
21:16<chealer>scientes: well, again, in the example I gave, it would surely not display that fine, since each version is output in chunks. there's one line by chunk
