#debian IRC Logs for 2012-04-26

---Logopened Thu Apr 26 00:00:44 2012
00:00<toote>hagom: depends on what's the issue
00:01<hagom>thanks toote, I don't know if the problem is the gcc or the code I'm writing
00:02<hagom>I'm starting to work with geany
00:03<hagom>and I've been writing a few programs with it and the IDE tells me that everything is fine
00:03<hagom>that the program has no error
00:03<sney>leenuxx, if you get a desktop wifi card at some point 'in the future' by then, wheezy might be stable anyway. it's getting close to the freeze
00:04-!-Hunger [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:04<hagom>when a I run the program it fails, and fails with string capture
00:04<hagom>for example
00:05<sney>geany can only find syntax errors, afaik.
00:05<hagom>if I use gets(string) when I read another type of data for example a float variable the program fails there
00:06<toote>hagom: you'll probably have to ellaborate a lot more about exactly what you're doing
00:06-!-vtts [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:06<toote>and, more importantly, how it relates to debian (justifying it to be discussed in this channel)
00:06<sney>syntax highlighting is useful to know that you didn't forget a ) somewhere but it can't write the code for you
00:07<hagom>it's not a problem of syntax because a lot of classmates has given me their codes and then I run them with geany and they fail exactly with the string capture
00:08<hagom>is there any way to fix this
00:08<toote>hagom: that's exactly what sney was telling you. it's not a syntax problem you're probably programming it wrong
00:08<hagom>I'm not
00:08<hagom>I swear
00:08<hagom>the code is good
00:08<sney>or you're missing some includes or something
00:09-!-drhouse123 [~drhouse12@] has joined #debian
00:09<sney>geany is just an editor
00:09<hagom>not using geany?
00:09<toote>sney: missing includes would make the program fail to compile
00:09<toote>hagom: you haven't explained your problem
00:09<hagom>the string capture
00:09<hagom>for example
00:10<sney>toote, oh, I thought that's what he was saying. I fill in the blanks wrong sometimes
00:11-!-prem [~prem@] has joined #debian
00:11<hagom>if I capture a string with gets(), when I try to capture another type of data for example a float, a bool , the program when it's been executed fails
00:12<hagom>how the programs fails
00:12<hagom>for example
00:12<hagom>I want to capture a name
00:12<toote>hagom: it's very likely because gets() only captures string data
00:12<hagom>with gets
00:12-!-perser [] has joined #debian
00:12<hagom>so far so good
00:13<hagom>but if the program ask me the salary (for example) and I declared a float salary variable the program skip that capture
00:13<hagom>it's the same behavior all the time
00:13<hagom>after capturing a string
00:13<toote>hagom: you're messing it up in your code
00:14<toote>because gets only captures strings
00:14<toote>if you want a float, you have to convert it afterwards
00:14<hagom>I know
00:14<hagom>but in that example I'm not capturing with gets
00:14<hagom>I'm capturing with scanf
00:14<toote>hagom: then you are not explaining your problem
00:14<toote>because you say that your problem was with gets, not with scanf
00:15<toote>now, if you want to discuss things not related to debian itself you will have to do so in a different channel
00:15<toote>I would suggest that if you are trying to troubleshoot code, you send a link to such code
00:15-!-perser [] has quit []
00:15<toote>debugging code "on the air" is complicated to say the least
00:16<hagom>I know but I have to try
00:16<hagom>because in college we use borland c++ 5.0
00:16<hagom>I'm from venezuela by the way
00:16<toote>still completely unrelated to this channel
00:16<toote>hagom: from argentina here
00:17<hagom>bueno toote, tenia q intentar porq busco y no encuentro el problema
00:17<hagom>y en la universidad uno haciendo los programas en borland no qdan muy buenos que digamos y eso nos ha costado nota
00:17<toote>hagom: sorry, this channel is english-only and for debian-related topics

00:49<rainfyre>Ariii: and my g4 powerbook runs beautifully, and Apple isn't supporting the PPC port anymore, and neither is Ubuntu
00:50<rainfyre>Ariii: I saw a killer G5 last night, dual core, 160 gig drive for $200
00:50<Ariii>That's so depressing :(.

02:36<geoffr>Hi, we have ~1500 servers upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze in the last few months, since the upgrade we're now getting about 3 servers a night freezing (unresponsive on the console & logging just stops). All these boxes are running the default 32 bit squeeze kernel and software raid with a pretty standard LAMP installation on that. We have munin graphing on each which shows no spikes in cpu, memory, io or disk activity around the time of the free

02:46<bones_was_here>an example: one older intel chipset, in combo with 2.6.32, would hang reliably if a usb memory was plugged in and out a few times, regardless of whether it got mounted

07:37<SynrG>correct. and in fact, there is no "and edit it". when you have os-prober installed and run 'update-grub' as root, it should automatically detect Windows 7 and add it to your grub menu

18:29<rainfyre>Ariii: what file system wouldn't mount? You're just burning an iso
18:30<Ariii>The file system on the .iso. The FAQ said it should include the files inside, not just the disk image, so I think that means it should probably mount.
18:31<retrospectacus>you *can* mount an ISO but that's not usually what you want to do. What FAQ, what are you trying to do?

21:32<Haywood|Jablome>imho, its a bug
21:32<kop>Haywood|Jablome: There is, in fact, more than one way to copy and paste and more than one clipboard.
21:33<Haywood|Jablome>if you insist, I highlight what I want to copy, right click, copy, then I close the document, then go to right click another document and paste, and WHOOPS, clipboard is gone, unless I leave the original document open
21:33<Haywood|Jablome>same with control c/v
21:33<kop>Haywood|Jablome: (I don't know a lot more than that, except that interactions between the two clipboards have historically been a source of problems.)
21:34<Gerowen>Haywood|Jablome - Install parcellite, it's a clipboard manager that sits in your system tray.
21:34<Haywood|Jablome>k ill give it a try
21:34<kop>Haywood|Jablome: If you just hilighted, then closed, then opened your other document and middle clicked to paste it would work.
21:34<Haywood|Jablome>yeah I switched from XP to debian about a year ago, and havent gone back

21:35<Haywood|Jablome>why not just right click and select paste
21:35<kop>Haywood|Jablome: That's how unix pastes. You don't need the extra clicks.
21:35<Haywood|Jablome>that should work too, but if I close the source document before I paste, its gone from the clipboard
21:35<Haywood|Jablome>thats the bug
21:35<Gerowen>kop: I never knew that middle click was a shortcut to paste until you said that just now...
21:35<kop>Haywood|Jablome: Highlight, then middle click. No other fussing.
21:35<Haywood|Jablome>well, I still think it should be fixed
21:36<Haywood|Jablome>most windows users who convert are not going to like that
21:36<kop>Haywood|Jablome: Probably has to do with X clipboards vs the other kind. As I said, it causes problems.
21:36<Gerowen>Haywood|Jablome: That bug is fixed for me by using parcellite, I've had it happen, but when I click on parcellite's icon, the stuff I just copied is still there, so you can just highlight it and it puts it back.
21:36<Haywood|Jablome>it appears to be a bug to us
21:36<Haywood|Jablome>I will try both suggestions

21:55<Gerowen>johnv474: I've had the issue, but it's random and not very common, it's not a huge issue to me because as I said to Haywood earlier, I use parcellite so it's easy to find the text I copied, but I'm using Debian Squeeze with Gnome, and I have it happen randomly.
