00:11<pengw>hi all
00:11<pengw>i try to put puppy linux onto a usb pen but dd did not work, so why?
00:12<Nemoder>!puppy linux
00:12<dpkg>Puppy Linux is a GNU/Linux mini-distribution. It is not supported in #debian. #puppylinux on
00:13<pengw>pappy 5.28 is based on ubuntu ban ubuntu is based on debian
00:13<pengw>so it is kind of debain
00:13<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian. Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu ( instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian> and <ubuntuirc>.
00:13-!-aranax [~aranax@] has joined #debian
00:14<sney>pengw, only debian is supported here. there is nothing you can say to change that. please respect our rules and go to the correct channel.
00:16<g0dfrey>Proftpd start automatic at boot time...But i have removed the links under /etc/rc2.d and /.etc.rcS.d...and also there's no related commands in rc.local...
00:16<g0dfrey>So what's the problem?

00:24-!-BlackDragon42 [~BlackDrag@] has quit []
00:24<sney>hmm, there might be something enabled in /etc/default/proftpd but that's aberrant behaviour - it should not load at boot if removed from /etc/rc*.d
00:24<CVirus>I'm trying to switch to OpenJDK so I removed sun-java6-bin and installed icedtea6-plugin and openjdk-6-jre and openjdk-6-jdk ... but when I run this "Version: Java SE 6 Update 24" ... how come ?
00:25-!-chealer [~chealer@] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
00:25<sney>CVirus, it might be reporting a sun-friendly version so that applications expecting the sun jre don't have a hissy fit. what does java -version give you?
00:26-!-micove [~micove@] has joined #debian
00:27<bones_was_here>g0dfrey: if you look at the boot messages and see what starts before and after proftpd you can get an idea of when it starts which would help narrow it down
00:27<sney>then you're using openjdk.
00:28<CVirus>sney: thanks

00:32<thethinker>does someone know how to configure geforce 540m under squeeze. I have kernel 3.2.0. I installed bumblebee and nvdia drivers but it doesn't work, and when i run apps like supertux everything keeps crashing
00:32<bones_was_here>g0dfrey: the easiest would be to change RUN= to "no" like sney said
00:32<bones_was_here>but if i were you, i'd be figuring out why removing it from rc2.d did not work, as whilst not the best way to disable a service, it should work
00:32<dpkg>well, data is Information. Any series of bits, characters or objects that has meaning. Data is stored and transmitted by computers. (see "commander data")

00:37<sney>thethinker, you should probably ask in #bumblebee on it's very early software so some brokenness is to be expected
00:37<bones_was_here>g0dfrey: that's true, /etc/init.d/proftpd start probably won't work either

09:24<gdb>Honestly, ejb, it may be easier to just uninstall things and see what's listed. For example: apt-get -s purge $package_name
09:24<gdb>Since you're using a command that directly acts on the installed packages, you'll get just that list.
09:24<kop>ejb: The package system should take care of everything for you, unless you've done something to break it.

09:41<benjr>oh im sorry
09:41<ejb>So I haven't touched /etc/aliases ... can I access any messages that have already been sent?
09:41<gdb>benjr: Yes, you can nest for loops, and close each with a done. It's just like writing a shell script but doing it all on one line (you can, of course, do it on multiple lines just by hitting enter -- bash will continue prompting you if you've not scripted enough commands for your overall command to complete).
09:41<kop>benjr: If you're solving a debian specific problem then we can go on all day. :-)

09:42<benjr>thanks both of you

09:42<ejb>How do I direct a client to read from there? (I got alpine)
09:42<gdb>ejb: It will do so out of the box.
09:43<kop>ejb: Your regular user account is not going to have permission to read root's email. You'll need to run it as root.
09:43<ejb>Ok, then there are no messages
09:43<ejb>I did
09:43<gdb>ejb: If you want to "forward" all of root's email to yourself after it's already been delivered, you can, as root, run this in /var/mail "cat root >> yourname" if you like.
09:43<gdb>ejb: There you go!
09:43<kop>ejb: But you can't (shouldn't) login to X as root, so "su -" and become root and then run your email client.
09:44<gdb>Note that cat statement isn't really "safe" if mail is delivered *while its running* but for your purposes, it would be fine.

09:50<ejb>Why purge instead of remove?
09:51<gdb>ejb: remove will leave all of the configuration in /etc. Using purge will delete everything, including configuration. The intent with remove is to allow you to reinstall the software later, preconfigured to your tastes. Since you've not changed the configuration, that doesn't matter -- you'll get the same config you have now if you install it again.
