00:08<uofm49426>is there any new still supported update to date os that still has a os that runs xorg 7.3 or 7.4
00:09<robbiethe1st>I doubt it.
00:09<robbiethe1st>You can always compile from (old) source if you want.
00:09<robbiethe1st>But, I mean, why would anyone use the old version? Newer versions are obviously better.
00:09<uofm49426>is lenny still supported

00:18<robbiethe1st>Thing is, Debian is a commitment. It takes quite a bit to get it configured as nicely as Ubuntu etc.
00:18<robbiethe1st>If you do, however, it'll run quite a bit nicer.
00:18<uofm49426>i used lenny few years ago

00:28<uofm49426>to ubuntu 11.04 was a steaming crap
00:29<robbiethe1st>Realistically, though, if you want a PC with a Linux that works /right/ consistantly... It will take some work. Everything has problems of one sort or another, you just will have to google for each and a fix.

05:39<curtis>I am having problem with getting usb wifi adapter to work on new install of debian, can anyone offer me a relatively clear walkthrough.
05:40<spacepluk>hi there, I've made a mess with my partition table but I managed to recover the full rootfs. It can't boot though. Any recommendation on ho to restore the system? I was thinking on reformatting from debian-installer, untar the rootfs, then install grub.
05:40<towo`>curtis, no one can help you, because no one knows your hardware
05:40<spacepluk>curtis: try installing firmware-linux-nonfree

10:48<ikey>Rebranding and customisation is a bit of a no-go with standard d-i too

10:48<dba>no, it's not
10:49<ikey>Well it never fitted the bill for me. I'm not slagging d-i its just more than I need :)

10:49<ikey>Ok but theres more to an installation than just debconf and preseeding can accomplish

11:57<gdb>rgms: You familiar with Mac OS X?
11:57<movl>it creates a DB of the contents of the hard drive, basically
11:57<rgms>I'm afraid not

11:57<gdb>It's the Linux answer to Spotlight. I can't recall what the Windows alternative is called. I think just "Indexing Service."

16:43<s_i_m>learningfast, which X driver do you use?
16:44<kop>learningfast: You could look in the bug report system. (But best to search for problem with your video driver.)
16:45-!-swex [~swex@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
16:46<learningfast>s_i_m: the one that the installation chooses (nouveau), but it seems that both 6.02 and 6.04 use that same driver
16:47<ziarkaen>learningfast, But possibly different versions. To rule that out, maybe try nv or vesa temporarily if the issue is readily reproducible.
16:49<learningfast>ziarkaen: I really don't know how to switch to nv or vesa. I tried to do that editing a xorg.conf file and all that but all I was able to get was a bad looking display
16:49<kop>learningfast: And in any case you could look for a bug report on nouveau. Or file one.

16:50<ziarkaen>learningfast, Have you perused xorg.log, dmesg, etc. for error messages?
16:50<kop>learningfast: You could also get a newer kernel from, which is unlikely to help. Or a newer X from the same place, which is more likely to make a difference but seems to be non-trivial.

16:52<Junkatron>for %%f in (*.gif) do gif2apng %%f doesn't work
16:52<learningfast>ziarkaen: yes, with 6.04 I think I could see in those logs errors related to [drm] nouveau , but I could not remember which, now with 6.02 it seems like they are not there. But is it possible that the newer version 6.04 is buggy while the old 6.02 is not? should it not be the opposite (i.e the higher the version the less buggy)? Also, isn't "current" supposed to be highly tested for stability?
16:52<Junkatron>I guess it's for windows or something
16:53<kop>Junkatron: for f in $(ls *.gif) ; do gif2aping $f ; done (What shell are you using?)
16:53<learningfast>kop: those solutions are very advanced for me. Isn't there any easy way to swith to nv and vesa to try?
16:53<kop>Junkatron: (Although spaces in file names will cause problems.
16:53<s_i_m>kop, no need for ls there ;)
16:54<kop>s_i_m: Ah. No. Or the $().
16:54<s_i_m> Junkatron: for f in *.gif; do gif2aping $f ; done
16:54<kop>learningfast: I'd have to look it up. But the thing to do, as ziarkaen suggested, is to diagnose the problem.
16:55<ziarkaen>learningfast, Its certainly possible that a bug is introduced in a newer version of software. It would be helpfulto have the verbatim messages. IF you want to test without noveau module, you'll have to add/modify a file containing a module section to /etc/X11/xorg.d or somesuch place
16:55<learningfast>kop: the problem is most likely with nouveau, but for some reason 6.02 doesn't give the problem while 6.04 does
16:55<Junkatron>I got bash: gif2aping: command not found
