00:01<Xel->Hey guys
00:02<craigevil>treborabc, copy one, like i use icedove for thunderbird, copy>save?paste in /usr/share/applications as root
00:02<Xel->I'm having an issue setting my default browser in Wheezy. I've done update-alternatives and stuff, but clicking a link from within gnome still opens up the fricken Gnome Web Browser.
00:02<Xel->What am I missing? Google has failed me.

00:05<craigevil>did you use the Gnome System settings to set the default also

00:05<Xel->I did not... let me see if it's an obvious menu item.
00:06<craigevil>System -> Preferences -> Preferred Applications
00:06<craigevil>or somewhere around there
00:07<Xel->No such option exists. Checked the 'Main Menu' to make sure it wasn't hidden, either
00:07<Xel->I've been looking for something like that for hours
00:07<Xel->This is a pretty clean wheezy install.
00:09<craigevil>never used gnome, mozilla wiki says to use Applications -> Desktop Preferences -> Advanced -> Preferred Applications
00:10-!-EZmoney [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:10<sney>Xel-, yeah, it's in a gui menu. Gnome 3 happily ignores alternatives.
00:11<craigevil>what browser are you wanting to use
00:11<craigevil>firefox or iceweasel?
00:11<sney>I found it a week or so ago but now I don't remember where. hmm
00:11<Xel->sney - I'm honestly not seeing that in my menu, and I'm not a noob... well I'm a noob to screwing with gnome, sort of.
00:11*sney looks

00:13<Ariii>Is there anything like Skype except for fvwm? Or AmiWM (I doubt one exists for AmiWM)?
00:13<Xel->Yea I did the update-alternatives thing
00:13<Xel->But gnome isn't honoring it...
00:13-!-gdb [] has joined #debian
00:13<sney>Xel-, ah, I found it through pidgin preferences. let's see if it's accessible through the main gnome menu.
00:14<sney>Xel-, if you search for 'system info' it comes up. no icon normally though. hmm.
00:14<sney>I'm not a gnome3 expert by any means either, I'm still figuring this out as I go.
00:15<Xel->Search? As in 'locate'/'find'?
00:15<Xel->Or is there some 'search' thing specific to gnome apps?
00:16<sney>as in, the search box that appears when you mouse into the upper left in the default gnome3 setup.
00:16<sney>it's under the notification area.
00:16<sney>it also appears if you hit the windows key, if you have one.
00:17<Xel->Looks like we've got different defaults :\
00:17<craigevil>did you also set> update-alternatives --config gnome-www-browser
00:18<sney>craigevil, gnome3 does not care about *any* alternatives.
00:18<sney>I tried all of those myself when searching for this.
00:18<Xel->x-www-browser and gnome-www-browser point to my binary, yes craigevil
00:19<craigevil>ok edit gconf, gconftool-2 --type string \
00:19<craigevil> -s /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command "chromium-browser %s"
00:19<sney>oh, I found it in the system settings - you can scroll down! it's the system info icon.
00:19<craigevil>change of course to say firefox
00:19<sney>craigevil, it's a bit early for workarounds.
00:19<Xel->Oh fuck me
00:19<Xel->Sney I see that now
00:19<craigevil>one command which works rather than looking thru GUI, just had to find the right thread in the forum
00:20<Xel->And that worked too.
00:20<Xel->Thanks sney (and craigevil )
00:20<Xel->You know, they coulda made this easier...
00:21<sney>and now I know too! I can't believe I missed that scroll bar.
00:21<Xel->I missed it too
00:21<Xel->For weeks
00:21<craigevil>thats one of the problems with gnome crap is hidden
00:21<Xel->Thank you guys

01:32<Sicelo>rainfyre: you should install that using a package manager. limit installing debs to those (rare) occassions that actually need it
01:32<rainfyre>I actually need it or I wouldn't have asked, thanks for your advice
01:32<rainfyre>I don't have access to a package manager
01:33<Sicelo>why not?
01:33<rainfyre>that's exactly why I need to install iwconfig, so I can connect to a wireless network from the cli
01:33<rainfyre>because I have a fresh squeeze install and no gui
01:33<rainfyre>and no wired connection, only wifi
01:33<rainfyre>so I'm working at connecting to my wifi
01:34<Sicelo>there's at least two cli package managers :P
01:34<Sicelo>apt-get install wireless-tools
01:34<rainfyre>yes and they both require an internet connection
01:34<rainfyre>thanks, I don't have a wired connection
01:34<Sicelo>ah. ok
01:34<Sicelo>well, how will you download the deb then?

01:35<rainfyre>using a different box and copying the .deb with a flash drive
01:35<Sicelo>and how did you install? i suppose from cd .. that should probably have the wireless tools
01:35<rainfyre>so, do you know where I can find iwconfig?
01:35<rainfyre>I'll check that
01:35<Sicelo>either way, look for 'wireless-tools'
01:36<rainfyre>checking right now :)

01:38<fcrs>with slapd in squeeze, instead of trying to insert config changes with ldapmodify, can i just edit the existing files under cn=config and restart the service?
01:38<rainfyre>Sicelo: can you point me to a correct /etc/sources.list example?
01:39<rainfyre>sorry, /etc/apt/sources.list
01:39<Sicelo>hmm, i'm on mobile atm, and i don't have this memorized
01:40<dpkg>The list of repositories for installing packages is /etc/apt/sources.list and has lines like "deb squeeze main" and "deb squeeze/updates main". Be sure to run "aptitude update" after editing sources.list. Also see <mirrors> <apt-spy> <squeeze updates> <squeeze security> and "man sources.list".

01:41<Sicelo>personally, i'm sure your sources.list already has the appropriate entry for cd
01:41<Sicelo>what errors are you getting?
01:42<rainfyre>no errors, I just want to connect to the online sources
01:42<Sicelo>so now wireless is working?

01:49<dpkg>Debian follows the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. The filesystem is categorized by purpose, not application. This allows, for example, the easy and efficient deployment of a read-only /usr area across a number of thin clients. See or install the 'debian-policy' package (/usr/share/doc/debian-policy/fhs/*), or, or "man hier".

12:17<Pitxyoki>Hi everyone.
12:18<Pitxyoki>Does anyone know what's going to be the rationale for iceweasel on stable/testing for the upcoming versions?

12:18<Pitxyoki>Is it going to stay with the esr until the next stable is released?
12:18<sney_>stable will have some form of *esr

12:19<sney_>which version that will be will become known when wheezy freezes.
12:19<sney_>it'll probably be 10 or 11 since the freeze is coming up soon.
12:20-!-Janik [~Jan@] has joined #debian
12:20<Pitxyoki>And the plan is for testing to get a newer version right after the release or will it only get ESRs from now on?
12:20<Pitxyoki>And the "release" versions will only get to experimental?
12:21<sney_>good question.
12:21<sney_>since testing is a test platform for building a stable release, it follows that they will stick with ESRs
12:22<sney_>"release" versions may be restricted to the backports
12:22<Pitxyoki>Otoh, I guess many desktop users of testing are willing to use the release versions.
12:23<sney_>yeah, if CUT becomes a thing, it may get the release versions
12:24<sney_>!tell Pitxyoki -about debian cut
12:25<Pitxyoki>I know about it.
12:25<Pitxyoki>For too long without anything visible happening there, unfortunately.
12:26<sney_>yeah, it's an interesting idea, but there's some debate about whether it's even worth doing
12:26<sney_>plus now that we're getting closer to the wheezy freeze, d-ds and d-ms are going to be focusing on that primarily

16:34<treborab>Anyone know of an IP blocker that uses IP lists to block IPs?
16:36<kop>treborab: Every firewall does that. If you don't want to use raw iptables use firm, or possibly shorewall. But there's no substitute for understanding what you're doing and on Linux that means at least being able to read iptables.

16:40<treborab>ok I'll look into that. On why windows systems I use peerblock.
16:41<kop>sney_: iptables/firm supports range blocking too, iirc. But if you've lots of IPs and can't subnet them then there's no substitute for a list.
16:41<movl>nothing beats raw iptables
16:41<kop>*sigh* ferm
16:42<movl>my 2 cents
16:42<kop>movl: Have you tried pf on Openbsd? Much better IMO.
16:43<sney_>well, you don't lose functionality with shorewall/ferm, it just makes the configs a bit more human-readable. much better 2 years down the line when you come upon something you implemented previously and have to figure out why/what it does
16:43<movl>kop: true
16:43<sney_>or worse, maintain someone else's
16:43<kop>sney_: Exactly.
16:43<kop><syntatic sugar>
16:44<sney_>firewalls should be set and forget in the majority of cases, so ideally you shouldn't be up to your neck in iptables all the time and become familiar with it that way
