00:04<sean_>could someone explain to me the value in command substitution? This is the example given in the book:: wherever $(command) is found, its output will be subsituted. This output could be assigned to a variable, as in the system information returned by the command uname -a:: $ SYSTEMSTRING=$(uname -a) $ echo $SYSTEMSTRING blah blahblah Thu May 10 2012 i386 GNU/Linux

00:07<robbiethe1st>sean_, uh, what are you asking exactly?
00:07<robbiethe1st>$string=$(uname -a) - runs "uname -a", takes the output on the screen and sticks it in $string.
00:07<sean_>robbiethelst: I don't understand why you wouldn't just type "uname -a". Why would you need to assign it a variable?
00:08<robbiethe1st>Mainly if you wanted to use it more than once
00:08<perlwizard>to use it later
00:08<sean_>couldnt you just go through the history?
00:08<perlwizard>thats not how it works.
00:08<robbiethe1st>Especially not inside a script
00:09<robbiethe1st>All these commands, while usable from the command line, are designed to be used inside a shell-script file.
00:09<robbiethe1st>Which is simply a list of commands to be excecuted.

00:10<sean_>so if you would use SYSTEMSTRING instead of uname -a?
00:10-!-technologov [] has joined #debian
00:10<robbiethe1st>The only benefit would be slightly less CPU usage, as uname -a only has to be run once, versus simply keeping the information in memory
00:11<robbiethe1st>Again, it's more useful for automation.
00:12<robbiethe1st>Run a script/program once, stick it's output in a variable. Take the contents of that variable, slice and dice it to get out usable information. Take that information, run it into another program.
00:12<sean_>thank you
00:13-!-technologov_ [] has joined #debian
00:15<robbiethe1st>NP. It's actually quite cool, once you figure out stuff to do with it
00:16<robbiethe1st>Effectively allows you to easily automate most any program, create simple interfaces and such.
00:16<robbiethe1st>And you can run scripts just like programs, so you can, for example, setup a key-combination to launch a script.

00:18<sean_>Yea, I hope (or plan) to be able to use all of these things i'm learning now for more advanced projects, like the ones you stated. For now though my knowledge is not very large, I'm just learning for the lpic next saturday.

00:20<robbiethe1st>Shell-scripting is great for tying stuff together. It's not great for, say, raw data processing, etc. It's relatively slow, but great for some things.
00:21<sean_>I haven't really dived into shell scripting yet, but it does look pretty interesting
00:21<robbiethe1st>Alternately, a language like Python is good for complex programs, and something like C++ for your in-depth complicated number-crunching

01:36<Sac>iandalton, I hope that was my case, congrats
01:36<sney>if only they were all that easy
01:37<sney>Sac, your issue just looks like dns resolution. does /etc/resolv.conf have anything in it? how is your network interface configured?
01:37<jm_>interesting, so some connections do work then - perhaps try a sniffer tool on windows to see if router receives it at all and replies back
01:38<Sac>my /etc/resolv.conf contains only one line 'nameserver' and thats my router's ip
01:39<Sac>sney, what do you mean by 'how is your network interface configured?' its set to use dhcp if thats what you mean

05:17<scientes>Infiltrator, if you have wheezy,
05:17<dpkg>Debian is working towards the ability to install packages from one architecture on a machine that is running a different architecture. This makes i386/amd64 issues simpler (no more ia32-libs!), helps tag firmware blobs with the correct arch and allows easier cross-compiling and bootstrapping. Multiarch support is a release goal for Debian 7.0 "Wheezy".

05:25<scientes>Infiltrator, well how are you going to package it to ship to these machines?
05:26<scientes>if it is a simple program you just need -m32, and to install the 32-bit headers (if they are arch-specific)
05:26<scientes>which you do with multiarch
