Installing directly from (i.e. with <nvidia-installer>) is _not_ supported in #debian, please go to #nvidia on

08:45<dpkg>i heard cgi is (Common Gateway Interface) This interface allows scripts or programs to run on a Web server. Almost all Web servers support CGI scripting. You can make a CGI script do pretty much anything a computer program can. Most commonly, they are implemented to control user interaction with the Web server on a Web site. You can use them to password-protect certain parts of your site, or save a user survey to a file on the server.

11:35<arnd_>hello. i've got a problem with a conflict between ssmtp and mailutils. on a fresh minimal squeeze install, if i try "aptitude install ssmtp mailutils" everything is fine. however, if i create a package which depends on both mailutils and ssmtp, it fails to install because of a dependency conflict. if i get it correctly, mailutils pulls in exim4 via "default-mta | mail-transport-agent" which in turn pulls in exim4-daemon-light and exim4-config
11:35<arnd_>which conflicts with ssmtp. is there any way to resolve this?

12:27<Guest1432>I installed a package on squeeze from backports and some security patches just came out. Squeeze-backports has <version>-1 (unpatched) wheezy has <version>-2 (upatched & newer) and sid has <version>-3 (newer and patched).
12:27<xeon-enouf>then there's ptrace(for processes?) / ltrace(for libs) which are likely less usefull
12:27<Guest1432>My question is how long does it usually take the patched version to trickle down to backports... if it can be answered.
12:28<dpkg>Put "deb squeeze/updates main contrib non-free" in your /etc/apt/sources.list file to keep up-to-date on security updates in stable. 12:32<Guest1432>!security backports
12:32<dpkg>Debian incorporates security fixes into the version currently in <stable>. This is non-trivial so it may take a couple days. Backporting security fixes means that you can update the package without problems like changed behaviour that would come with updating to a new version of the software. The upstream version number doesn't change in the Debian package when this is done; check the changelog or the <tracker of doom>.

14:01<mcdaniels>scientes: Cause i got a crappy resolution now :)
14:02<mcdaniels>btw. is there a Xorg way to autogenerate a xorg.conf?
14:02<cowslapper>retrospectacus I always do bare bone net installs. gksu was not the right way to fix that issue.
14:02<scientes>mcdaniels, Xorg -configure
14:02<Zaba>mcdaniels, you don't need to do that - the aticonfig one is fine-ish
14:02<Zaba>but really, without a lot with fglrx enabled nobody can tell what's going wrong
14:02<retrospectacus>cowslapper: just use apt-get and/or aptitude, why synaptic?
14:03<mcdaniels>Zaba: the aticonfig is creating a xorg.conf for fglrx but it does not work as mentioned above

16:56<wiredoptix>ok, so you know of a safe tutorial on how i can update lenny to squeeze?
16:57<daemonkeeper>dpkg: lenny->squeeze
16:57<dpkg>Remove volatile & backports from /etc/apt/sources.list changing lenny to squeeze. Use apt-get for the upgrade: "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get install linux-image-`uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,'` udev". Install firmware-linux-nonfree if needed; check you have a 2.6.32 kernel installed "aptitude search '~nlinux-image~i'" and reboot into it. "apt-get dist-upgrade". READ THE <release notes>.
16:57<retrospectacus>you should get lenny up-to-date first,
16:57<retrospectacus>!lenny sources.list
16:57<dpkg>Lenny is no longer on the mirror network but can be found on; you can use sources.list lines "deb lenny main" and "deb lenny/updates main". Realise that Lenny has not had security support since February 2012 and that you should upgrade to a newer, supported release. Ask me about <lenny->squeeze>.

18:37<themill>!immediate configuration
18:37<dpkg>When upgrading from squeeze to wheezy, apt may stop with "E: Could not perform immediate configuration on '$package'." Fixing this is quite difficult and will take time... if $package isn't an Essential package, then "dpkg -r $package; apt-get -f install" will often be enough to solve the problem. If "dpkg -r" complains about dependencies, consider adding "--force-depends".
18:38<themill>Funshine: ^^ you'll probably have to remove phonon-backend-vlc and perhaps also the phonon package to do this.
