06:13 | <babilen> | buckfast: A couple of comments: I would recommend to use OpenJDK for 7 as it is the reference implementation. The tutorial you linked is a very, well, manual way of handling things and certainly not supported by us. You could try using java-package from sid (/msg dpkg ssb). You can get newer iceweasel version for squeeze from http://mozilla.debian.net |

07:52 | <putterson> | I have only googled, and I couldn't find anything that accurately described my issue, only cursors getting into the top left corner |
07:52 | <putterson> | any suggestions on what to search? |
07:53 | <sney> | is it displaying the cursor in both places at once? |
07:54 | <putterson> | no what happens is within ~10 pixels of the left of any display, the image of the cursor goes to the top of the screen (in the correct X position) |
07:54 | <putterson> | the input from the cursor still goes to the correct location |

This happens on both gnome and xfce images and I have used previous images before. I am using it as a usb I copied using dd. Could this be that it is not finding grub and I could fix this by installing grub packages before the install on the live session? |
12:03 | <babilen> | ania: Which driver did you install? Could you check your logs? What happens if you run "ifup eth0" (or whatever interface you use) |

14:15 | <DennisTheTiger> | mase: This said, I think you need a null modem. |
14:15 | <mase> | first i have problems connecting with an embedded-node (garbage transmittions, tried every settings), so i want to try if the cable even works, between two regular computers |
14:16 | <DennisTheTiger> | mase: At this point, I'd suggest either a cable tester, or a simple continuity tester. If it's just an RS232 cable, testing for continuity breaks should tell you if the cable's borked. |

17:42 | <scientes> | retrospectacus, its also quite a reasonable fs for flash media if you have to use a block layer |
17:42 | <nevs> | i get an error: mkfs.vfat: Device partition expected, not making filesystem on entire device '/dev/sdh' (use -I to override) |
17:42 | <retrospectacus> | you can also use fdisk to setup partitions on the usb drive (and then e.g. mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdh1; mkfs.vfat /dev/sdh2) but Windoz can't handle that |

22:06 | <cmoneywhite2005> | that it couldnt find kde or gnome |
22:07 | <Hydroxide> | those aren't precise package names |
22:07 | <cmoneywhite2005> | i looked online and found them but it didnt help |
22:08 | <Hydroxide> | for kde you'd want kde-standard or kde-full depending on if you want KDE without various extras or KDE with the extras |
22:08 | <cmoneywhite2005> | alrighty |
22:08 | <Hydroxide> | for GNOME there is actually a package called gnome, equivalent to kde-full, or gnome-desktop-environment, equivalent to kde-standard |
22:09 | <Hydroxide> | for xfce you'd want package xfce4 |
22:09 | <cmoneywhite2005> | im doing a re-install to see if i messed something up |
22:09 | <cmoneywhite2005> | never used xfce in the past |
22:09 | <Hydroxide> | good luck. everything I said assumes you're using debian 6.0 'squeeze' - if you're using something else, let us know so we can direct you to the right place |
22:09 | <cmoneywhite2005> | yes im using 6.0 |
22:10 | <Hydroxide> | cmoneywhite2005: cool. if you're reinstalling the OS, you can request gnome, kde, or xfce more simply in the installer |
22:10 | <cmoneywhite2005> | yeah? |
22:10 | -!- | soap [~soap@46.119.246.90] has joined #debian |
22:11 | <sney> | cmoneywhite2005, also, if you selected the desktop environment while you were installing and it didn't give you any gui, it's possible your network connection wasn't working during the install |
22:11 | <Hydroxide> | cmoneywhite2005: which install medium are you using? |
22:11 | <cmoneywhite2005> | we'll its working now i guess, im using the netinstall |
22:12 | <Hydroxide> | cmoneywhite2005: take a look at the "Note" within http://www.debian.org/releases/squeeze/i386/ch06s03.html.en#pkgsel |
22:12 | <cmoneywhite2005> | i just didnt want to take the time to download all the cds/dvds |
22:13 | <Hydroxide> | cmoneywhite2005: so if you choose 'desktop environment' and have network when you install, it'll default to GNOME. If you want KDE or Xfce or LXDE, either choose one of the Advanced options -> Alternative desktop environments or give the desktop=kde/desktop=xfce/desktop=lxde option at boot |
22:13 | <Hydroxide> | as that note explains |
22:13 | <Hydroxide> | but by default, you should have GNOME (version 2, not version 3, at least in squeeze) |
