This happens on both gnome and xfce images and I have used previous images before. I am using it as a usb I copied using dd. Could this be that it is not finding grub and I could fix this by installing grub packages before the install on the live session?

12:05<babilen>kazuma153: Hmm, ok. That is quite a pity -- I can't really help you with the live installer (you might want to ask in #debian-live) and would have suggested to try the "normal" installer.
12:06<kazuma153>babilen: ok thanks, ill try asking there perhaps, i might also try installing grub packages as they might just be missing in this build for some reason, 6.0.2 live images worked fine

12:06<babilen>ania: How did you install it and how did this installation cause the removal of other essential packages? What happens if you run "ifup eth0" ... (and all the other questions I asked so far)
12:06<ania>where do I find logs?
12:06<babilen>ania: /var/log/dpkg.log* /var/log/aptitude*
12:06<ania>ifup eth0 gives a list of "DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to port 67 interval 8"
12:07<ania>and "No DHCPOFFERS received."
12:07<ania>sorry, I can't copy it because it's on other computer
12:07<babilen>ania: So, that works. Do you have any idea why you are not being assigned a DHCP address? How do you connect to the internet? (tell me more about your setup)
12:08<ania>first I installed it incorrectly using "sh <file from webpage>" and didn't reboot, then from recovery mode ran the same thing because xorg was bad
12:08<ania>now xorg is ok but stuff like nm-applet etc are gone
12:09<babilen>ania: That installation method is neither support nor recommended. Please see "/msg dpkg fglrx dkms" for the Debian way to install the drivers. That being said: In most cases the free radeon driver is sufficient if not superiour. (/msg dpkg radeon)

12:15<babilen>ania: Sorry - I have to run now. I'll be back later, but I would investigate along those lines.
12:15<ania>I'm using gnome, nm-applet and network manager used to be there and I was using them but they disappeared

22:06<cmoneywhite2005>that it couldnt find kde or gnome
22:07<Hydroxide>those aren't precise package names
22:07<cmoneywhite2005>i looked online and found them but it didnt help
22:08<Hydroxide>for kde you'd want kde-standard or kde-full depending on if you want KDE without various extras or KDE with the extras
22:08<Hydroxide>for GNOME there is actually a package called gnome, equivalent to kde-full, or gnome-desktop-environment, equivalent to kde-standard
22:09<Hydroxide>for xfce you'd want package xfce4
22:09<cmoneywhite2005>im doing a re-install to see if i messed something up
22:09<cmoneywhite2005>never used xfce in the past
22:09<Hydroxide>good luck. everything I said assumes you're using debian 6.0 'squeeze' - if you're using something else, let us know so we can direct you to the right place
22:09<cmoneywhite2005>yes im using 6.0
22:10<Hydroxide>cmoneywhite2005: cool. if you're reinstalling the OS, you can request gnome, kde, or xfce more simply in the installer
22:10-!-soap [~soap@] has joined #debian
22:11<sney>cmoneywhite2005, also, if you selected the desktop environment while you were installing and it didn't give you any gui, it's possible your network connection wasn't working during the install
22:11<Hydroxide>cmoneywhite2005: which install medium are you using?
22:11<cmoneywhite2005>we'll its working now i guess, im using the netinstall
22:12<Hydroxide>cmoneywhite2005: take a look at the "Note" within
22:12<cmoneywhite2005>i just didnt want to take the time to download all the cds/dvds
22:13<Hydroxide>cmoneywhite2005: so if you choose 'desktop environment' and have network when you install, it'll default to GNOME. If you want KDE or Xfce or LXDE, either choose one of the Advanced options -> Alternative desktop environments or give the desktop=kde/desktop=xfce/desktop=lxde option at boot
22:13<Hydroxide>as that note explains
22:13<Hydroxide>but by default, you should have GNOME (version 2, not version 3, at least in squeeze)

22:59<birch>ok, this is very bad. I just installed Debian but it never asked me for my username and password info. 23:05<birch>sney, I did not. When I did the install I did advanced options > graphical install. I was never prompted for the normal user setup, which was weird. I'm retrying the process now with the graphical install on the main screen. But no, there was no root password setup. Is there a default or should I restart the process? I'm very worried about the state of my raid drives in this process...should I be worried?

23:06<sney>birch, it should always ask to set up user accounts and a root password. did you do expert install and skip that step? or are you using some custom installer?
23:06<birch>sney i tihnk i accidentally did the expert install
23:07<sney>next time don't do that unless you're an expert at using the debian installer. it will let you skip important steps, as you just found out

23:08<birch>sney, i guess so. i have 3 raid drives and i've been very worried about their states during my switch from ubuntu to debian. are there any pitfalls i should watch out for? thank you for the help.
23:08<sney>what kind if raid setup is it? software?
23:09<birch>sney, software raid. / is raid 1 on the same 2 drives as a raid 1 for /home. then there's a three drive raid 5 to hold all of my data. i told debian to format / and /home and use the raid 5 as /store but not to format it.

23:10<sney>ok. debian won't format anything unless you explicitly tell it to, and md in debian is identical to md in ubuntu, so you should be fine

23:11<birch>sney, the raid 5 is my back up, lol. i don't have enough drives to have a backup of 4tb of data. that's what the raid 5 is for.
23:12<sney>here's my professional opinion as a datacenter technician: raid isn't a backup
23:12<birch>everytime i set up drives i try to make them more secure and i always end up spending way more money on it than i had before. my previous setup was just a single 2tb drive with another as a back up.
23:12<birch>sney i'm a recent grad and applying for junior sysadmin positions, lol. guess this is a lesson i should be learning now.

23:14<sney>ok, fair enough. if you wind up working corporate/financial you will find they are often throwing out old equipment that is still useful. snag the first DLT drive you see in the dumpster
23:14<sney>and then back up what's important to you. multiple simultaneous hard drive failures isn't as uncommon as you'd think.
23:15<birch>sney yeah i'm looking at places in nyc, trying to snag the first entry level admin position i can find. everything wants 1-3 years experience min and i don't think that using linux since 2006 for my person stuff counts, lol.
