00:31<youlysses>The gnome2 to gnome3 upgrade is a hard upgrade process. If possible, I recommend starting on wheezy.
00:32<DennisTheTiger>youlysses: OK, that's news to me. If I dist-upgrade, what am I in for with gnome?
00:33<xtick>I do not have immediately put Wheezy. I have already changed, and made an update. Now a lot of mistakes and Gnome will not start
00:34<DennisTheTiger>xtick: Did you dist-upgrade, or just 'apt-get update && aptitude safe-upgrade', or...?

00:37<youlysses>DennisTheTiger: I never had a "flawless" upgrade (did it on 4+ times). It's still in testing mind you (and me), but there has been some issues. Weird graphical things, tearing, and the like.
00:37-!-samsul [~samsul@] has joined #debian
00:38<DennisTheTiger>youlysses: Only time I had one go flawless is a) when I did ->squeeze, or when it was my server (and thereby nothing graphical).
00:38-!-kevinbenko [] has joined #debian
00:38<youlysses>DennisTheTiger: Yes, non-graphical installs are pure ease. :-)
00:39<DennisTheTiger>youlysses: Yeah, but I'm not switching my server to wheezy until it is about to go stable.
00:39<youlysses>DennisTheTiger: Perfectly Understandable.
00:40<youlysses>DennisTheTiger: The main reason I'm on sid right now is because I'm in love with GNOME3. :-)
00:40<xtick>Already 1,000 times regretted that he had begun updating = (
00:40<youlysses>*Also at some point I hope to jein the Debian-Gnome team.
00:40<youlysses>xtick: Did you backup before you started?
00:41<xtick>Of course!
00:41<xtick>I feel sorry for your time and nerves spent on updating
00:41<DennisTheTiger>I have a backup, but I'm still not sure I want to go in yet. dist-upgrade is taking a LOT of time resolving dependencies.

00:42<youlysses>xtick: Then just do a clean install of wheezy. ;-)

I would install linux-image-ARCH (e.g. linux-image-amd64) and linux-headers-ARCH (e.g. linux-headers-amd64) for the kernel.
09:40<babilen>!tell goodell -about xorg.conf

09:41<goodell>babilen: actually the nvidia kernel module that I've got is nvidia-kernel-legacy-173xx-dkms, so it sounds like that ought to work;
09:42<goodell>I am using xorg.conf, among other things to manage my four monitors and rotate one of them.
09:42<goodell>(did I mention that the video cards are PCI?) (I figured it was not important.)
09:43<babilen>Just wanted to mention that you can quite easily split your xorg.conf into single files in xorg.conf.d

09:45<babilen>goodell: As I said earlier: I would just install suitable metapackages such as linux-image-686-pae and linux-headers-686-pae -- They depend on the lates kernel and you don't have to worry about upgrading them manually.
09:45<goodell>OK, great.
09:46<babilen>goodell: You can, naturally, also install specific kernel/header packages if you prefer that.
09:46<goodell>*nod* it sounds like we're on the same page with the kernel.
09:47<goodell>I'll pick up openafs-modules-dkms and see if it all just works

20:21<SynrG>if the reverse is true
20:21<Marillion>Jzebus: this is the point, sometimes is unstable broken
20:22<Jzebus>well, I may learn since I'll install differently
20:22<Jzebus>and I know Sid is always broken
20:23<Marillion>Jzebus: it is NOT recommend tu use unstable if you want a stable system
20:23<SynrG>worst case is, you found a bug. you can't reproduce the bug. now someone else wastes their time on it.
20:23<Jzebus>I know
20:23<SynrG>or worse, nobody discovers it. then wheezy releases with the bug.
20:23<Jzebus>this is why I asked about it in general hen said better to not waste time
20:23-!-jcmeza [] has quit [Quit: leaving]
20:23<Jzebus>I mention it in case it has been seen before
20:24<SynrG>well, when you reinstall you're basically flushing any useful information your system may have held about the problem.

20:25<Marillion>SynrG: more people use unstable, as in every DD, the ordinary bugs report known the maintainer, should it

20:34<Jzebus>SynrG: I know. I posted here to find out if it was something anyone else had seen.
20:34<SynrG>that's not a statistically valid way of determining "it's only me"

23:51<bones_was_here>or firmware update for the hdd maybe
