13:52<Airwave>Hey guys. I am trying to set up Pound to forward HTTP requests for me. Is it possible to have http://www.mydomain.tld/site1/ forwarded to one server, and http://www.mydomain.tld/site2/ forwarded to another?
13:53<Airwave>I would use http://site1.mydomain.tld/ and http://site2.mydomain.tld/ instead, but then I would need to buy more SSL certificates.
13:53<pparadis>Airwave: i use nginx for that sort of thing.
13:53-!-janos_ [~janos@] has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
13:54<Airwave>pparadis: Does it work well for the kind of setup I just described?
13:54<pparadis>Airwave: sure it does.
13:54<Airwave>And in this case, nginx would just be working as a frontend, just like Pound?
13:54<scientes>Airwave, you can get a wildcard ssl certificate
13:54<Airwave>scientes: That's 10 times the price though.
13:55<pparadis>scientes: yepper, or he could also possibly investigate and not pay anything at all.
13:55<scientes>^^^yep those are the cool ones
13:55<Airwave>I can afford shelling out $16 a year for a certificate, but $160 seems like a lot.
13:55<pparadis>aranax: in all seriousness, i use nginx all over the place for anything you can imagine involving http(s).
13:55<pparadis>aranax: i enjoy shelling out $0.
13:56<pparadis>Airwave: rather ^
13:56<Airwave>I took a look at StartSSL, but doesn't there have to be some catch? Why would I pay $16 for a certificate at all if the free certificate works fine?
13:57-!-NightMonkey [] has joined #debian
13:57<pparadis>Airwave: there is no catch.
13:57<Airwave>pparadis: I like lighttpd. Is nginx as much of a delight to use?
13:57<pparadis>Airwave: they charge for extended validation and such certs.
13:57<pparadis>Airwave: it's much more of a delight to use. lighttpd also has a history of memory leaks.
13:57<pparadis>(been there, done that, burned the shirt)
13:58-!-adam_g_ [] has joined #debian
13:58<pparadis>Airwave: some of the busiest sites on the planet are powered by nginx now.

14:00<Airwave>What is the point of things like extended validation? It's just for a personal website, so all I really care about is not getting the browser warning for HTTPS.

14:00<pparadis>first, that's not possible.
14:01<scientes>no, i'm trying to find it, it was like a "open core" model for v2, there is a press release somewhere
14:01<Airwave>It's BSD licensed, so they can go proprietary if they so wish, if I'm not mistaken.
14:01-!-manfred [] has joined #debian

14:01<pparadis>that's not how that works.
14:02<Airwave>Of course the old code would always be there and BSD licensed.
14:02<Airwave>Maybe I'm thinking about it all wrong.
14:02<scientes>Airwave, what I remember is that the base was going to be open source, but NGINX Inc was going to be selling propritary extensions
14:02<pparadis>BSD licensing simply means anybody can do what they like with the source as long as they give credit.
14:02<Airwave>Hmm, OK. Sounds fishy.

14:04<Airwave>So it wouldn't be possible for GPL-licensed software.

14:04<scientes>ahh here:
14:04<pparadis>i believe in freedom as in freedom.
14:05<Airwave>Well, it depends on your definition of freedom.
14:05<pparadis>scientes: the moment anything goes "wonky" with the core devs for nginx, it will simply be forked overnight and a new dev community will spring up around that.
14:05<scientes>pparadis, well, that is contentious, Linus always says that the GPL (v2) has a sense of fairness to it
14:05<scientes>pparadis, I know there will continue to be an open source nginx
14:05<Airwave>Under the Stallman/GNU/FSF definition, they are both equally free.
14:05<pparadis>Airwave: no, freedom is a well defined term. the GPL and people like RMS attempt to redefine it. it doesn't work that way.
14:05<Airwave>pparadis: That's very true. That is indeed the beauty of libre software.

16:54<epl692>So now that I have burned myself 8 dvds, and gotten used to this non-rolling-release style linux.... can I update packages from the internet and still use dvds?
16:54<cyrus_nk>scientes, gigix no chance, i reinstalled the system, i didn't installed official nvidia drivers and regarding the dkms method, i don't have nvidia-kernel-dkms on the installation dvd
16:54<cyrus_nk>same terminal above
16:55<scientes>epl692, i recommend using apt-cacher-ng +jidgo to download the dvds, so you also have them on disk, if you have the space
16:55<cyrus_nk>after reisnatlling the system i don't get gdm3 installed and i install it by hand, is it normal?
16:56<scientes>epl692, but yeah, if you have the dvds in your sources, and the internet, it can be set up (and i think it is the default) to still ask you to put in DVD X
16:56<scientes>cyrus_nk, its not on the dvd, cause its in non-free
16:56<cyrus_nk>it's not just starting the desktop after login
16:56<cyrus_nk>scientes, what can i use that is on the 1st dvd?
16:56<scientes>cyrus_nk, what version, cause squeeze has gdm3 by default
16:57<cyrus_nk>i have wheezy testing
16:57<epl692>okay good, because I have, lets say, very limited bandwidth... (or I would be on arch linux and scraching my head about this dvd thing) but each tool for each job.... but I want updates.
16:57<scientes>cyrus_nk, oh with wheezy, there is nouveau which is pretty good for 2D
16:57<scientes>well it can be buggy
16:57<scientes>i have to blacklist xvideo extension to get video working
16:57<cyrus_nk>i really need 3d:)

16:57<cyrus_nk>it worked just fine, an upgrade screwed this
16:58<scientes>well nouveau does 3d sometimes, but yeah you probably want the nvidia driver, which you have to download
16:58<scientes>but you can just do apt-get update
16:58<scientes>and then install it (as long as non-free is in /etc/apt/sources.list)

17:01<scientes>you can wait on the glx drivers until you get internet working cyrus_nk

19:35<Ionic>kvm and libvirt have no influence on video stuff
