00:56<misery>alright, so a process is doing something that sets CPU usage to nearly 100%, but it is because its always in a hardware interrupt, and doesnt show up in top. How do i find out what it is?

01:03<pparadis>misery: maybe some combinaton of these typical techniques will help -->
01:08<misery>ps one is the only one that looks like it might work... (whats 'pcpu'?). Here goes... prepare for disconnect!
01:09<misery>oh wait, raid is still syncing.
01:09-!-adam_ [] has joined #debian
01:09<pparadis>misery: fwiw, continuous hardware interrupts have usually indicated an actual hardware problem in my experience.
01:10<misery>mine too, but ive replaced every bit of relevant hardware, and it makes no difference :/
01:10-!-adam_ [] has quit []
01:10<pparadis>this can be manifested by a system that shouldn't be doing anything pegging a CPU core (or significantly utilizing one).
01:10<misery>just replaced the DVD drive a *3rd* time, and its still crapping itself
01:10-!-earwig [] has joined #debian
01:10<pparadis>man, i've really gotta tell you with the problems you're seeing from this system, it truly may be time to just build another box.
01:11<misery>i know i know!
01:11<pparadis>i mean this is getting crazy :)
01:11<misery>im poor, ok? :)
01:11<pparadis>shit, i know about poor, i understand. i'm just saying at some point you've gotta say "hell, i could pick up some piece of crap from ebay for $50 that would work better than this" ;)
01:12<misery>i think i have it sorted into 2 different bugs though: 1 is that the hardware is somehow (how?? really? ive replaced it all several times) dodgy, but the other bug im trying to sort out now, is why it hangs in X11. It should NEVER do that, even with broken hw
01:13<pparadis>everything you're seeing is a significant deviation from the norm, even for old bastards like me who are prone to running modern releases on crufty hardware.
01:14<pparadis>it just kinda screams "jim, it's a doorstop now."
01:14<misery>frankly, i can deal with a dodgy optical drive, but this hang thing is unacceptible.
01:14<misery>pparadis, if you can suggest some good modern hw to buy, ill consider it.
01:15<misery>but i dont want to buy more cheap shit, and its been so long since i bought this, that i dont know whats good anymore
01:15<pparadis>my best advice is to check out neweg for various specials and see what you can put together on a budget. if you need more personal help with that, hit me up in pm and i'll see what i can do to help you out with it over the weekend.
01:16<misery>tbh poverty isnt really an issue... its just that im stingy, and picky about what i buy.
01:16<pparadis>oh i get it, i'm the same way :)
01:18<misery>~$2000 seems acceptible for a new mac‌hine.
01:18<pparadis>that seems incredibly bananas outstandingly too much money.
01:19<misery>but i wouldnt know a POS from gold these days, so looking on newegg is pointless
01:19*pparadis hits you up in pm.

02:57<pparadis>in all seriousness, one of the most magical things about computers is the simple fact that sometimes taking them completely apart and then putting them back together makes them work.
02:57<pparadis>which is horribly frustrating :)
02:57<misery>hah yeah, but i know why that is... dry solder joints
02:58<misery>which this thing obviously has alot of
02:58<pparadis>nod, a bump here and a nudge there, a profanity laced scream or two, and poof things work somehow.

03:38<pparadis>sml: what problem are you trying to solve?

03:38-!-foolano [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:39<sml>i had to do a chown www-data: -R * on his upload so that it worked in apache
03:39<misery>ps -aux | grep apache?
03:39<sml>but obviously i dont want to have to do that every time he uploads a new site
03:39<pparadis>sml: perhaps you should add his user account to the www-data group.
03:39<pparadis>that probably has broader security implications, though.
03:39<sml>pparadis: well that's what i was thinking (see above!) :) but not sure if that's the 'correct solution'. must be a common problem. will go have a google

03:43<pparadis>it's also pretty much mandatory for an apache2 box that allows people to upload their own content, as running everything as www-data has _nasty_ security implications in such cases.
03:43<misery>yeah, but hes just got one server/virtual host? or have i misread
03:44<pparadis>misery: he's giving access to a friend who wants to host his own content on that box, but that content needs to be separate from the other content.
03:44<misery>meh, based on recent happenings, i better just shut up. :/
03:45<misery>definately misread then.

11:57<sney>yes, this. but it may also be worth noting that I don't think I've ever received a spam email as a result of my address being visible on
11:58<pparadis>sney: nod, i don't think i have either. and if i have, i'm certain either me or my spam filters said "noted, disregarded, go debian"

11:59<abrotman>purechOS: also, some people create an account just for working with Debian

12:01<abrotman>right ..
12:01<daemonkeeper>Which is not ... nice.
12:01<purechOS>I sent him an email to his private address and he sent one back. Then I found this on the net.
12:01<purechOS>not sure how the could happen.
12:02<abrotman>he CCed the BTS ..
12:02<purechOS>is there a way I can get this off the net?
12:02<pparadis>i'll readily agree it perhaps wasn't the nicest thing in the world, but if you're depending on an email address to remain undisclosed, you're honestly doing it wrong. that's not a personal slam or anything, just being honest.
12:02<pparadis>it's kinda like attempting to obsure a net-facing IP. doesn't work well in the long run.

23:08-!-Baloo is now known as Guest1020
23:08<pparadis>ung: also, please see

23:10<ung>oh, I thought that the backports could be higher
23:11<pparadis>ung: that will install a 3.2 kernel.

23:12<pparadis>ung: anther thing to consider is the possibility that the slower speed is the result of ntfs-3g on the debian side, and not the drive itself.

23:13<pparadis>ung: if you feel like testing this, i'd create another partition on the drive, format it as ext3, and see how that performs.
23:13<ung>btw :
23:14<pparadis>this is of course not a perfect test, as it's a bit of apples and oranges going on, but if the write speed is dramatically higher that's an indication.

23:15<ung>I will try right now the new kernel and ext3 after I backed up my data (it's a new computer and it's my backup lol)
23:15<pparadis>ung: that dmesg output looked okay, btw.
23:16<ung>thank you, going to try the new kernel right now, brb
23:16<pparadis>ung: try the new kernel first, and see if it makes any difference. then test performance of an ext3 filesystem on the same disk. ntfs-3g is not going to be as fast as native ntfs on the windows side, but maybe you can get some improvement anyhow.

23:42<homercycles>I installed KDE as per but now when I reboot, I'm back to a CLI. how do I get a GUI as the default?
23:44<ung>did you install xorg and kde-plasma-desktop ?
23:45<ung>try apt-get install xorg kde-plasma-desktop kdm
23:45<homercycles>I should have xorg because I'm in it now (gnome fallback or something, from "startx"). I simply did as per:
23:47<homercycles>ung: that's installing heaps of stuff. I wonder why the "task" didn't result in a KDE desktop? It also downloaded heaps of stuff
23:47<homercycles>ung: it must have downloaded them to /dev/nul from what I can tell

23:48<ung>"KDE Desktop task is what is installed by Debian-Installer's Desktop "task" this is not the minimal install
23:49<homercycles>ung: I apparently have a heap of packages installed. going to reboot and see what I get. thanks
23:49<ung>yes it install alot of stuff but unless you install each package separate, kde-plasma-desktop is the kde minimalist install
23:49<homercycles>ung: that doco could do with some clarification, I think
23:50<ung>it will also install kdm as rec package so you will get your gui

23:59<ung>I use pidgin
23:59<homercycles>ung: so do I, but I thought I'd check out kopete again. I haven't used it since kde3.5 days
