01:29<birch>ok thanks, checking out something now
01:29<bones_was_here>if you're feeling adventurous you could also look at running testing rather than stable, ubuntu is built from debian unstable so you would have been comparing to much newer versions of pretty much every program

01:33<bones_was_here>that's... strange, hopefully the newer driver will fix it, the version of vlc in stable has never hit me with anything like that

01:37<birch>bones_was_here, yeah i would have except it wasn't anything specific enough for me to describe. the video is choppy, all of the icons and text looks...just like it's the wrong driver or there isn't one installed yet, but not quite as bad as the old days or a fresh windows install, etc
01:38<bones_was_here>is the screen resolution wrong perhaps?
01:38<birch>bones_was_here, this is the ati tut i had used before that didn't work, what in here should i change?
01:39<bones_was_here>birch: what's the output of lsmod | grep radeon

01:43<birch>bones_was_here, i decided it was either to paste from the box and type that in, lol
01:44<bones_was_here>ok that means you're running the radeon (free software) graphics driver, which has control of the GPU and prevents catalyst/fglrx from loading
01:44<bones_was_here>in stable, the version of radeon will be very old, and even the latest version isn't as fast or as capable as catalyst...
01:45<bones_was_here>the debian wiki page you linked doesn't mention disabling the radeon driver, which is done automatically in new versions, but apparently not in stable
01:45-!-scientes [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]

01:48<bones_was_here>try the wiki page with the backports driver, it should create a file /etc/modprobe.d/fglrx-driver.conf which disables the radeon driver at the next boot
01:49<bones_was_here>if not you can do it manually, it only needs to contain one line
01:49<bones_was_here>blacklist radeon

01:54<bones_was_here>i think you should cancel that and get catalyst 12.3 working first

02:06<birch>bones_was_here, i undid the vlc fix so i wouldn't have to worry about that killing my install, lol. now i'm retrying the backports
02:07<birch>btw where does your name come from?
02:07<bones_was_here>the aptitude interface is great for figuring out those kinds of messes :p
02:08<birch>ok i ran the line i posted above and it's finished

02:12<bones_was_here>those errors show catalyst 10.9 trying to compile against kernel 3.2, which will never work :p
02:13<bones_was_here>3.2 is pretty new but should work with the backports catalyst 12.3
02:13<birch>ok, so what went wrong and how do i change it?
02:14<birch>aptitude -rt squeeze-backports install linux-headers-2.6-$(uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,') fglrx-control fglrx-driver is the line i used
02:14<bones_was_here>try using aptitude to upgrade the fglrx packages, if you select one of them and scroll to the bottom the versions are listed, and you can + on a version to select it for install
02:15<bones_was_here>you may see warnings about broken packages, once you've selected all the components of catalyst for upgrade, the warnings should clear

02:22<birch>bones_was_here, should i just install the driver from the amd website instead?
02:23<bones_was_here>you'll find wiki's and howto's tend to give long apt commands (often that include string edits with sed or awk) as that allows it to be pasted into a terminal
02:23<bones_was_here>but the aptitude curses interface, once you're familiar enough with it, should give you a better understanding of what's going on

02:24<birch>i don't understand what's broken here. the latest catalyst on their site is 12.4 wouldn't that work with this kernel?
02:24<birch>i go to the package and hit u, it says it's updating and then spits me back out to the main page
02:25-!-kapil [~kapil@] has joined #debian
02:25-!-kapil [~kapil@] has quit []
02:25<bones_was_here>12.4 from the site will work with your kernel but you'll still need to do something about the failed compile of 10.9, which will keep getting repeated by apt (since it failed)
02:25<bones_was_here>u is the same as apt-get update
02:26<bones_was_here>it updates the list of packages, not a package itself
02:26<birch>ok, so how do i update the package?
02:27-!-jparkton [~Joseph@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:27<bones_was_here>hit enter on the package, scroll down and select the backports or bpo version, and hit + (shift =)

02:28<birch>i don't see any version other than 1:10-9-3 :(
02:29<bones_was_here>ah ok, maybe thats why your aptitude install command didn't get you the version you wanted

02:45<bones_was_here>sounds like a super slow refresh...
02:46-!-rsalveti [~rsalveti@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:46<ompaul>birch: to diagnose that one could ask you the question, does it stay within the working space in the application, or does it expand into the menu and beyond. Also check your application for special effects.
02:46<bones_was_here>sure there were no errors from that install? :P
02:46*ompaul points to kde as a great way of not knowing
02:47<birch>bones_was_here, none that i saw but it's a bit late now unless i could see the previous output in terminal but i forget the command
02:47<bones_was_here>maybe try the catalyst control panel (amdcccle in terminal), see if it looks like it's working
02:48<bones_was_here>glxinfo | head is also a good check, it should say direct rendering: Yes
02:50<birch>ompaul, it only appears to be happening when i do something fullscreen
02:51<ompaul>birch: then that looks like you have less video ram available than your application wants
02:51<birch>ompaul, it stays within the window it's happening in
02:52<ompaul>refresh rates want to be more
02:52<birch>ompaul, i've never had ram problems before with this card, unless the new catalyst driver is too much for it
02:52<birch>radeon hd 4650
02:52<ompaul>try it with the window almost max about 2mm off the edges
02:53<ompaul>I only use intel so those refs mean nothing to me
02:53<birch>ompaul, ok i tried that. it's very noticeable within the window.
02:53<bones_was_here>run amdcccle as your own user, not as root
02:54<birch>bones_was_here, when i've done that in the past it didn't let me change the refresh rate and resolution so i did it as root
02:54<birch>bones_was_here, similar errors when run as use, and the display manager tab is disabled
02:55<bones_was_here>birch: that's true, it does need root to save that setting, easiest way is to install gksu and do 'gksu amdcccle'
02:55<bones_was_here>but something else is still not working... could you pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

03:11<bones_was_here>no those firmware packages have nothing to do with catalyst
03:12<bones_was_here>the firmware packages are for hardware that expects to be handed its firmware by the driver at bootup, as opposed to having it stored in a flashrom

03:20<bones_was_here>2.6.32 is normal for stable, i was surprised when i saw the 3.2 stuff
03:21<bones_was_here>you're compiling a kernel interface module, which communicates between the actual driver from AMD (not available as source) and the kernel
03:21<bones_was_here>but the interface changes a bit between kernel versions, which is why it has to be compiled for each kernel/driver combo
03:21<bones_was_here>hmm ok, but uname -a says 2.6.32 ?
03:21-!-Mcloven_ [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
03:21<birch>yeah, 2.6.32-5-amd64
03:22<bones_was_here>not sure how it's gotten like that but you need linux-headers-2.6.32-5-amd64 and can remove linux-headers-3.2.0-0.bpo.2-amd64
03:22<birch>so what's a safe way to do that?
03:22<bones_was_here>removing headers is always safe, they're not needed to boot the OS
03:23<bones_was_here>linux-image packages contain the actual kernel, you can add and remove those packages freely, but if you reboot with no working one installed, well, it won't :p
03:24<birch>odd, in removing 3.2 it will remove 2.6
03:24<bones_was_here>it's safe to remove all linux-headers packages, just make sure to only remove linux-headers, not linux-image
03:25<birch>ok i'll remove the headers and install the 2.6.32-5 ones to replace the 2.6
