00:05<sney>no worries, Guest1881, we can get that gui installed. just fix sources.list, make sure you have an internet connection, and try installing X again. I'm not sure what was missing from dvd1 though

00:10<sney>Guest1881, make sure it has "deb squeeze main" and "deb squeeze/updates main" on separate lines, and delete any lines that refer to a cdrom
00:10<sney>coreyb, try doing it in a root terminal with 'aptitude remove packagename' - if it doesn't work, copy the output, paste it to and link it here
00:10<coreyb>okay will do.
00:11<sney>Guest1881, ok, so add the missing line, remove the cdrom line, save the file and run 'aptitude update'

00:29<Guest1881>lol I kind of wonder why not save space with 1 default enviro. instead of depending on people knowing to have ethernet plugged into thier computer. I think most people would per fer to have to burn 2 disks than deal with this.

04:34<Dr_O>ringo999: in unix/linux we refer to a long running process as a daemon. looking at the man page of unoconv it can already run as a network daemon, however to properly daemonise one would expect the program to redirect to and from </dev/null and be started by an init script... I sugest you look at the existing init scripts on your ssytem in /etc/init.d and look at how they use the start-stop-daemon command to help get their payload running

04:37<ringo999>Dr_O: what interval would you use? 10 minutes?
04:37<alkisg1>Hi, I want to install debian wheezy on a remote system where I only have GUI access (e.g. x11vnc on the live cd). But I can't find a debian wheezy live cd, any pointers?
04:38-!-simonlnu [V6DGteOLqx@] has joined #debian
04:38<jm_>alkisg1: so install squeeze base and upgrade
04:38<Dr_O>I would not use an interval... I would use the special time spec "@reboot" to start the daemon process... and just hope it does not die!
04:38<jm_>or use live weekly image or whatver
04:38<alkisg1>jm_: where can I find the live weekly image?

04:39<alkisg1>jm_: the only thing I found there was a README on how to create my own live cd...
04:40<alkisg1>I tried it from my Ubuntu box, but the resulting (supposedly gnome) CD was only 180MB, I suppose that couldn't work..
04:40<gnugr>alkisg1:check also this
04:41<alkisg1>gnugr: no mention about wheezy/testing there either :(
04:41<Dr_O>ringo999: "man 5 crontab" explains the @reboot
04:41<jm_>alkisg1: you can also use any live cd + debootstrap
04:42<alkisg1>Well, if there's no wheezy live cd available anywhere, I suppose I'd have to do that... thank you :(

06:11<enkrav>(sorry, meant 64 bit in the last part)

06:12<Dr_O>But what if you also have an ssh client on the installing machine which "ssh mydesktop -L22:localhost:2222"
06:12<alkisg1>That's nice, but it's also doable with socat/screen, so that the local user also sees what's going on
06:12<alkisg1>And socat provides an SSL socket
06:12<alkisg1>(and the reverse connection bypasses NAT, firewalls etc)
06:14<Dr_O>sounds like you have it sorted!
06:15<alkisg1>Is it possible to switch to vt2 while installing debian, and install screen/socat on the installing system?

09:02<grove>nocturnal: Debian has never (well not while I can remember at least) had an init script called iptables, or endorsed any specific way of handling firewall rules (from squeeze, we also have kFreeBSD, so iptables is even always used) - you've always had to either write your own, or choose one of the existing packages - if you don't know what solution is used on the box you're at, searching through /etc is the way to go

22:18<pparadis>pastebin what you see, if you see anything at all.
22:19<jesse>says no such file or directory

22:20<jesse>wait my syntax was wrong says device is already mounted on mnt
22:20<pparadis>jesse: are you typing "ls" as in lowercase L then s, or 1s as in the number 1?
22:20<jesse>so i mounted it
22:20-!-amphi [~amphi@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
22:20<pparadis>ls /mnt
22:21<pparadis>l as in lima, s as in sierra
22:22<jesse>got it it says yaboot yaboot.conf
22:22<pparadis>okay, that's not the partition you want, then.
22:22<pparadis>so now do this: umount /mnt
22:22<pparadis>and then do this: mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
22:23<pparadis>and see what's in there with "ls /mnt" again. see the pattern here? :)

22:24<pparadis>have you located the filesystem containing the data you are after?
22:24<jesse>ok did a list command i think im where i wanna be
22:25<pparadis>if you see stuff like an "etc" directory under /mnt then you probably want to do "cd /mnt/etc" and then either edit or move your files around as you desire.

22:29<pparadis>wasn't your original objective to rename your xorg.conf or something?

22:29<pparadis>i'm just trying to get you to the point where you can do whatever others were trying to get you to do originally. i have no idea after that. :)

22:31<diederik>you probably want to delete/rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf. If you rename, make sure that it doesn't end in .conf
22:31-!-Caroll [~caroll@] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
22:31<pparadis>jesse: please note that in your case, that would be /mnt/etc/X11/ ...
22:32<pparadis>since the partition containing your /etc is mounted under /mnt right now.
22:32<diederik>indded, good point
22:33<diederik>jesse's initramfs probably needs to rebuild too (or sth), but I don't know how to do that
22:34-!-xylon [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
22:34<diederik>but my _guess_ is that sth else needs to be changed to, since I doubt a X11 .conf triggers a initramfs build
