00:03<pparadis>RandomGuy99: this might be helpful -->
00:03<RandomGuy99>thx for responding. im using the latest debian 6.0.4. ive tried the instructions described in the second post here:
00:04<RandomGuy99>sorry i mean debian 6.0.5
00:04<pparadis>RandomGuy99: it seems somebody solved the problem with running a newer kernel from backports. if you've already been through the alsa checklist you were sent a few minutes ago, and it still isn't working, maybe it's worth a shot to install a backported kernel.
00:05<RandomGuy99>i saw that thread. i would rather run the stable kernel but i suppose if i must run another to get sound to work then i will switch
00:05<pparadis>that's a judgement call you'll have to make, but at least it would give you another data point for debugging purposes.
00:06<pparadis>RandomGuy99: are you running amd64?
00:06<pparadis>and -->
00:06<pparadis>if it helps, that's a good thing, and like i said it will give you another point of comparison.
00:07<RandomGuy99>ok, i will try it

18:01<matlock>got an entry in fstab for my disk, it's a third partition but when I type mount -a it tells me that there's no mountpoint

18:02<sney_>mount -a does not create mountpoints, the directory needs to exist. some other mounting utilities can create directories on the fly, like pmount, but if you are using fstab you should just create the directory yourself

21:46<TurdFerguson>and i need to partitions to be /home/user1 /home/user2
21:46<TurdFerguson>never messed with fdisk or cfdisk... so i am not sure how to do this
21:47<pparadis>TurdFerguson: will you just need two partitions, or will there be a need for similar partitions in the future? if the answer is yes to more in the future, you might consider using logical volumes via LVM. if you just want to use fdisk, there are many examples on the web and the man page is comprehensive.

21:52<TurdFerguson>but i'm not really trying to just limit them to space
21:52<pparadis>if you're trying to enforce quotas for disk usage, you might be interested in the "quota" package. if you're interested in access control, that's what filesystem permissions are for.
21:53<TurdFerguson>yeah that was already suggested
21:53<pparadis>quota + chmod
21:53<TurdFerguson>i do not want to use quota at all
21:53<TurdFerguson>it's important that each user have their own partition
21:54<pparadis>you can mount a partition anywhere you want with "mount /dev/sdaX /your/mount/point" in the shell, and you can add entries to /etc/fstab to have them mounted at boot. but i'm really curious why you want each user to have their own partition.
