06:52<abrotman>sagar: any options in the BIOS relating to the kb/mouse?
06:52<s_i_m>sagar, is it usb or ps/2 keyboard?
06:52<sagar>s_i_m: it's usb.
06:53<sagar>abrotman: no. Although, "UEFI bios" is something that is being advertised in the BIOS splashscreens... if that makes any difference.
06:55<s_i_m>a cool motherboard btw, I just checked the specs

07:00<sagar>abrotman... Hm. I can do that, but since I'll be doing most of my office work, I'd prefer having a stable system. Is there a way to convert a wheezy system to squeeze?

07:01<s_i_m>but to me it seems that simply the usb subsystem does not work with the kernel from squeeze
07:01<sagar>s_i_m: yes. I even thought that the installer might detect the keyboard after it starts, so I switched the USB port after the first screen showed.
07:01<s_i_m>just a guess, though

12:53<AlexLikeRock>Microsoft and Verisign developer program which will give them a key that
12:53<AlexLikeRock>can then be used to sign a “shim” bootloader. This shim loads GRUB 2,

17:33<TheLaughingMan>How would I go about setting up a Software RAID and allowing me to hot-swap HDDs and automatically reconstruct the new HDD
17:34<devil>TheLaughingMan: did you read on it?
17:36<TheLaughingMan>devil: I have tried googling it and the only thing I have found for setting something automated was this
17:37<ompaul>TheLaughingMan: the idea of doing hot swap disks and not paying for a raid card and the really useful things that go with that seems to be not the best way forward
17:37<ompaul>the costs will pay if you really have to use them

17:38<ompaul>TheLaughingMan: and {just in case of a very slim chance however I doubt you're thinking this) if you think this is a good way to do backups NO is the answer
17:38<ompaul>it is how to lose all your data and the more data you have the easier it will be to lose it
17:39<TheLaughingMan>So do hardware RAID

17:40<TheLaughingMan>ompaul, so do hardware raid?

17:41<ompaul>TheLaughingMan: most certainly and raid is not a back up - it is a way to allow you exist if a disk goes away

17:42<ompaul>wow no parse
17:42<ompaul>TheLaughingMan: the backup is rsync of the right files to another box which may or may not already have a copy of your data and or your binaries and other packages you and configs if they are important

17:47<sney_>TheLaughingMan: careful with raid cards. there are a lot of cards that offer "raid" but they rely heavily on software for parity, so they are just fakes... this also applies to the kind of "raid" you get built into a motherboard.

20:38<pparadis>TheLaughingMan: that's a decent card. i've got a fair amount of experience with those, and they work well and are pretty reliable.
20:39<pparadis>TheLaughingMan: you may well wish to look at the BBU module for it as well. it's under the accessories tab on the page you linked.
20:41<pparadis>TheLaughingMan: one more thing to keep in mind: if the stuff you're using has to stay up, you need to buy two RAID cards. optimally, you'd have two identical chassis so you could just pull the disks out of a machine with problems and put them in the spare, but at minimum you need to have reserve components like RAID cards, power supplies, etc.

22:27<garn32>lduros: 2.6.32-5 by default
22:28<garn32>erp nvm
22:28<garn32>did see that you had specified sid, not squeeze
22:28<scientes>lduros, 3.2, which is maintained by Ben H, a DD
22:28<lduros>ah ok
22:29<scientes>garn32, 2.6.32 is squeeze, wheezy is 3.2
22:29<lduros>scientes: for some reason, if I run the kernel 3.2 the temperature is around 60 degrees, but with 3.4 it's around 45 degrees
22:29<scientes>lduros, what graphic chip do you have?
22:29<lduros>intel graphics

22:30<scientes>are you sure its not hybrid graphics intel+nvidia (branded optimus)
22:30<lduros>scientes: no i'm pretty sure
22:30<scientes>well if you don't have that, I don't know what the problem is, someone in #debian-kernel might know
